In service-oriented systems, clients can access services via a network. Service level agreements (SLA) can exist, which specify - among other things - performance-related Quality of Service (QoS) properties between the client and the server, such as round-trip time, processing time, or availability. For a service provider serious financial consequences or other penalties can follow in case of not fulfilling the SLAs. The service consumer wants to evaluate that the provider complies with the guaranteed SLAs. Designing and developing a QoS-aware service-oriented system means facing many design challenges, such as where and how to measure the performance-related QoS properties. This paper presents design practices and patterns for measuring such QoS properties by extending and utilizing existing patterns. The focus of the patterns lies on the QoS measuring impact on the client's or service's performance, the extend of separation of concerns, the property of reusability, and the preciseness of the measured QoS properties. The patterns help to build efficient solutions to measure performance-related QoS properties in a service-oriented system.

In this paper, we propose a new heuristic for runtime task mapping of application(s) onto reconfigurable architectures. The heuristic is based on hardware configuration reuse, which tries to avoid the reconfiguration overhead of few selected tasks, by reusing the hardware configurations already available in the reconfigurable hardware. We evaluate our heuristic by performing a mapping of an extended Motion-JPEG application onto a reconfigurable architecture. A large variety of experiments have been conducted on the proposed algorithm for the same reconfigurable architecture model with different FPGA sizes. The obtained result shows up to 45\% performance gain by reusing the hardware configurations as suggested by the proposed heuristic, compared to well-known approaches from the state-of-the-art, which do not take into consideration the hardware configuration reuse.

High-level simulation and design space exploration nowadays are key ingredients for system-level design of modern multimedia embedded systems. The majority of the work in this area evaluates systems under a single, fixed application workload. In reality, however, the application workload in such systems (i.e., the applications that are concurrently executing and contending for system resources), and therefore the intensity and nature of the application demands, can change dramatically over time. To facilitate the simulation and exploration of different workload scenarios, this paper presents the concept of a so-called scenario database, which has been integrated in our Sesame system-level simulation framework. This scenario database compactly stores application scenarios and allows for generating application workloads - in the form of event traces - belonging to the stored scenarios for the purpose of scenario-aware simulation in Sesame.

Modern embedded systems come with contradictory design constraints. On one hand, these systems often target mass production and battery-based devices, and therefore should be cheap and power efficient. On the other hand, they need to achieve high (real-time) performance. This wide spectrum of design requirements leads to complex heterogeneous system-on-chip (SoC) architectures. The complexity of embedded systems forces designers to model and simulate systems and their components to explore the wide range of design choices. Such design space exploration is especially needed during the early design stages, where the design space is at its largest. Due to the exponential design space in real problems and multiple criteria to be considered, multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) are often used to trim down a large design space into a finite set of points and provide the designer a set of tradable solutions with respect to the design criteria. Interpreting the search results (e.g., where are the Pareto points located), understanding their relations and analyzing how the design space was searched by such searching algorithms is of invaluable importance to the designer. To this end, this paper presents a novel interactive visualization tool, based on tree visualization, to understand the search dynamics of a MOEA and to visualize where the optimum design points are located in the design space and what objective values they have.

According to the Internet of Services vision, composite services are created by composing services to complex business processes. The relationships between services in a composition are defined by Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Managing composite SLAs is a complex task which is currently performed manually. In this paper we present an approach for automating the management of composite SLAs by exploiting the explicit knowledge about dependencies between composed services. We define a formal model for representing a set of dependencies. A set of algorithms exploits this information to automate tasks of composite SLA management. These tasks are the validation of SLAs during negotiation, the evaluation of SLA renegotiation requests and the evaluation of SLA violations with regard to their effects on other services. We have validated our approach based on a logistics scenario. We present results with respect to performance and a set of test cases demonstrating the added value of dependency information based automated SLA management. © 2010 IEEE.

Nowadays, modeling languages like UML are essential in the design of complex software systems and also start to enter the domain of hardware and hardware/software codesign. Due to shortening time-to-market demands, ¿first time right¿ requirements have thereby to be satisfied. In this paper, we propose an approach that makes use of Boolean satisfiability for verifying UML/OCL models. We describe how the respective components of a verification problem, namely system states of a UML model, OCL constraints, and the actual verification task, can be encoded and afterwards automatically solved using an off-the-shelf SAT solver. Experiments show that our approach can solve verification tasks significantly faster than previous methods while still supporting a large variety of UML/OCL constructs.

rSesame is a generic modeling and simulation framework which can explore and evaluate reconfigurable systems at the early design stages. The framework can be used to explore different HW/SW partitionings, task mappings and scheduling strategies at both design time and runtime. The framework strives for a high degree of flexibility, ease of use, fast performance and applicability. In this paper, we want to evaluate the framework's characteristics by showing that it can easily and quickly model, simulate and compare a wide range of runtime mapping heuristics from various domains. A case study with a Motion-JPEG (MJPEG) application demonstrates that the presented model can be efficiently used to model and simulate a wide variety of mapping heuristics as well as to perform runtime exploration of various non-functional design parameters such as execution time, number of reconfigurations, area usage, etc.

System-level simulation and design space exploration (DSE) are key ingredients for the design of multiprocessor system-on-chip (MP-SoC) based embedded systems. The efforts in this area, however, typically use ad-hoc software infrastructures to facilitate and support the system-level DSE experiments. In this paper, we present a new, generic system-level MP-SoC DSE infrastructure, called NASA (Non Ad-hoc Search Algorithm). This highly modular framework uses well-defined interfaces to easily integrate different system-level simulation tools as well as different combinations of search strategies in a simple plug-and-play fashion. Moreover, NASA deploys a so-called dimension-oriented DSE approach, allowing designers to configure the appropriate number of, possibly different, search algorithms to simultaneously co-explore the various design space dimensions. As a result, NASA provides a flexible and re-usable framework for the systematic exploration of the multi-dimensional MP-SoC design space, starting from a set of relatively simple user specifications. To demonstrate the distinct aspects of NASA, we also present several DSE experiments in which we, e.g., compare NASA configurations using a single search algorithm for all design space dimensions to configurations using a separate search algorithm per dimension. These experiments indicate that the latter multi-dimensional co-exploration can find better design points and evaluates a higher diversity of design alternatives as compared to the more traditional approach of using a single search algorithm for all dimensions.
