Delay tolerant networks may become unexpectedly partitioned due to node mobility or variation in signal strength. However, most widely used models in some relative works are generally very simplistic. In order to exploit intelligent forwarding algorithms, a novel nodal mobile model of delay tolerant networks is presented to map reality with more accuracy. And several approaches are introduced to analyze the network structure, such as n-cliques, n-clans, degree, closeness and betweenness. Our research results showed that the centralizations became smaller when the wireless connections were concerned. It meant that quite a number of nodes became potential relays because of the new structure of networks.

In this paper the APA, an App for Posture Analysis, that incorporates the OWAS method (Ovako Working Posture Analysis System) for assessing potential harmful postures of physically hard working employees, is presented and evaluated. The app is intended as a tool for occupational safety experts in assessing the individual postures of workers to identify and prevent harmful working situations in regards to musculoskeletal hazards. For this, APA incorporates a digitized assessment sheet for the OWAS method and timing support that helps occupational safety experts structure and simplify the assessment workflow. To investigate whether the protocol sheet can be replaced with the app, a study was conducted in which the inter-rater reliability among the app and the paper protocol sheet (as control group) was evaluated. In addition, the usability of the app was determined via the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ), In the study, the app achieved higher inter-rater reliability for watching a video recording of postures than the control group. The chi-square test revealed differences in the use of the app and paper only for leg postures. The UEQ indicated overall above average results, which indicates a sufficient usability, which was also confirmed by free-textual comments of the 13 study participants. The results suggest that it would be possible to replace the paper protocol sheet in the future with an app. © 2023 by SCITEPRESS – Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

Infrastructure as Code (IaC) enables developers and operations teams to automatically deploy and manage an IT infrastructure via software. Among other uses, IaC is widely used in the context of continuously released deployments such as those of microservice and other cloud-based systems. Although IaC-based deployments have been utilized by many companies, there are no approaches on checking their conformance to architectural aspects yet. In this paper, we focus on security-related practices including observability, access control, and traffic control in IaC-based deployments. While best practices for this topic have been documented in some gray literature sources such as practitioners’ blogs and public repositories, approaches enabling automated checking of conformance to such best practices do not yet exist. We propose a model-based approach based on generic, technology-independent metrics, tied to typical architectural design decisions on IaC-based deployments. With this approach, we can measure conformance to security-related practices. We demonstrate and assess the validity and appropriateness of these metrics in assessing a system’s conformance to practices through regression analysis.

Relip: Reliable in-Band Parallel Communication for Magnetic MIMO Wireless Power Transfer System

In magnetic resonant coupling (MRC) based wireless power transfer (WPT) systems, receiver (RX) feedback communication is promising to enhance the capability and efficiency of the system. Although some studies have explored in-band implementations with low overhead costs, it has not been comprehensively investigated. In this paper, we propose Relip, a Reliable layer-level in-band parallel feedback communication mechanism for MIMO MRC-WPT systems, which addresses the impact of RX-RX couplings (i.e., non-negligible interference from strong couplings and positive effects of relay phenomenon), and provides a theoretical analysis of communication reliability. Technically, we first devise an On-Off based two-phase modulation mechanism to achieve RX identification and dependency detection under relay phenomenon. Then, we utilize observed channel decomposability to collect group-level power transfer channel conditions for eliminating the interference caused by strong RX-RX couplings. Furthermore, we perform RX selection to optimize the trade-off between communication reliability and time overhead. We design and implement the Relip prototype and conduct extensive experiments. The results validate the effectiveness of our mechanism, i.e., Relip can provide ≥99% average decoding accuracy for concurrent feedback communication of 14 devices, achieving an 18.31% improvement compared to the state-of-the-art solution. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

The escalating frequency of geological disasters, local conflicts, and public health crises necessitates robust emergency communication systems within Internet of Things (IoT) frameworks to ensure public safety. Employing Power-Domain NOMA (PD-NOMA) and Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) enables effective multi-device communication that is crucial for emergency responses. However, the practical implementation of NOMA technologies in emergency scenarios is hindered by existing resource constraints and the requirement of prioritizing critical emergency information. To address these limitations, we propose a multi-objective optimization-based NOMA framework to maximize network throughput while ensuring quality of service (QoS) and energy efficiency. This framework incorporates a novel communication grouping algorithm based on queue penalty optimization and an Actor-Critic-based dynamic updating algorithm for multiple resource allocation. Our study proposes a practical approach to enhance emergency communication in disaster areas, ensuring efficient and reliable network performance under various constraints. © 2025 IEEE.

Real-time vital signs (breathing and heartbeat) monitoring is essential for patient care and sleep disease prevention. Current solutions are mostly based on wearable sensors or cameras, the former affects the quality of sleep, while the latter is not conducive to privacy protection, and the cost of these methods is usually expensive. In this paper, we propose Wital, a real-time vital signs monitoring system based on the low-cost and widespread COTS WiFi device. Most of the existing WiFi-based vital signs monitoring solutions utilize the line of sight (LOS) WiFi signals to achieve powerful performance. However, in our daily environments, NLOS sensing is more common. In this article, we first model the relationship between the energy ratio of LOS/NLOS signals and the ability to monitor vital signs based on the Ricean-K theory and theoretically prove that blocking LOS signals in NLOS sensing is more beneficial. We have also established a real-time vital signs monitoring system to verify our method, and the experimental results prove the effectiveness of our method. © 2021 IEEE.

Effective power control is key to solving the inter-user interference problem that degrades performance in cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Motivated by its ability to operate online and model-free, without relying on training datasets, we leverage deep reinforcement learning (DRL) for uplink power control, aiming to maximize the guaranteed rate. We propose a fully centralized single-agent framework and two distributed schemes that employ several agents for improved scalability, leveraging prioritized experience replay to enable fast adaptation to the dynamic changes of the wireless environment. We investigate the performance of two multi-agent system architectures: (1) centralized training, decentralized execution (CTDE), where each agent forwards its RL experience to a central trainer, and (2) personalized federated learning (FedPer), where the training is performed locally at each agent, and only the base layer of the local deep neural network (DNN) model is forwarded periodically for aggregation at a server. We focus on the realistic scenario of dynamic device (de-)activation, combined with user mobility. Numerical evaluations demonstrate that the proposed FedPer with prioritized sampling achieves near-optimal rate and power performance while incurring the least amount of communication overhead. © 2015 IEEE.

It is essential to look at cybersecurity not only as a technical problem but also from economic, societal, and legal perspectives. Companies need to pay more attention to planning and investments in cybersecurity due to different factors, such as budget constraints and complexities involved in the planning and decision-making processes. Also, companies wrongly do not see themselves as the target of a potential cyberattack. Therefore, there is still a need for approaches that support companies, especially Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME), during the cybersecurity planning and investment decisions. This PhD thesis addressed cybersecurity planning and investment gaps by proposing the CyberTEA approach. This approach is composed of a five-phase methodology, a framework, and a set of solutions for cybersecurity planning and investment, considering the technical requirements of cybersecurity and its economic dimensions, such as the potential economic impacts of cyberattacks and the cost-benefit of protections available on the market to protect against specific threats. The evaluations and scientific advances of CyberTEA approach was proven valid to support SMEs while also showing the benefits and opportunities for cybersecurity economic approaches.

Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) technologies are used to automate the deployment of cloud applications. They promote the usage of code to define and configure the IT infrastructure of cloud applications allowing them to benefit from conventional software development practices, which facilitates the rapid deployment of new versions of application infrastructures without sacrificing quality or stability. On the other hand, enterprise applications need to conform to compliance regarding external regulations and internal policies. Many of these compliance rules affect the application architecture on which IaC code operates. However, managing the architectural compliance of IaC-based application deployments faces a number of challenges, such as configuration drift and the heterogeneity of IaC technologies. Therefore, in this work, we present a vision on how to uniformly manage the compliance of the infrastructure of applications that utilize heterogeneous IaC technologies for deployment automation. To this end, we introduce an initial design for the IaC-based Architectural Compliance Management Framework and discuss how it addresses the corresponding challenges.
