In this paper we argue that the incorporation of experiences on testing activities, in particular mutation testing, in programming courses adds valuable knowledge to the learning process. Mutation testing is centered on the idea of creating test data for uncovering seeded faults in programs that slightly differ from the original program. These faulty programs are called mutants. Through source code analysis and test case execution, testers have to identify the differences between the original program and the mutants. To do so, testers must have a sound understanding of the program's control flow and instructions. This broad understanding of programming represents a key skill for novice students in programming courses. We evaluate the effects of using mutation testing to improve the learning process of novice students in programming courses. We conclude that the introduction of mutation testing in the learning process provides students with learning experiences that go beyond traditional lectures and hands-on programming courses.

In this paper the YummyKarachi system is presented;it is a combined restaurant and safe routes recommender system for an unsafe city such as Karachi. YummyKarachi utilizes a hybrid model combining service recommendations with route recommendations in a map-based user interface. It utilizes tweets arriving in real-time to search for danger zones within the city, and it generates restaurant recommendations while taking into account security conditions of the city.

This paper introduces our dedicated authenticated encryption scheme ICEPOLE. ICEPOLE is a high-speed hardware-oriented scheme, suitable for high-throughput network nodes or generally any environment where specialized hardware (such as FPGAs or ASICs) can be used to provide high data processing rates. ICEPOLE-128 (the primary ICEPOLE variant) is very fast. On the modern FPGA device Virtex 6, a basic iterative architecture of ICEPOLE reaches 41 Gbits/s, which is over 10 times faster than the equivalent implementation of AES-128-GCM. The throughput-to-area ratio is also substantially better when compared to AES-128-GCM. We have carefully examined the security of the algorithm through a range of cryptanalytic techniques and our findings indicate that ICEPOLE offers high security level. © International Association for Cryptologic Research 2014.

This work proposes a policy iteration procedure for the synthesis of optimal and globally stabilizing control policies for Linear Time Invariant (LTI) Asymptotically Null-controllable with Bounded Inputs (ANCBI) systems. This class includes systems with eigenvalues on the imaginary axis (possibly repeated) but no pole with positive real part. The proposed policy iteration relies on a class of piecewise quadratic Lyapunov functions which is non-differentiable, but continuous, and polynomial in both the state and the deadzone functions of the input signals. The second step of the policy iteration is based on a piecewise control policy improvement. An important aspect of the proposed piecewise policy is that at each step of the iteration the computed policy is globally stabilizing and the existence of an improving value function is guaranteed as well. The solution to the inequalities which is required to hold at each step of the policy iteration, is obtained by solving Sum-of-Squares Programs (SOSP) that can be efficiently implemented with semidefinite programming (SDP) solvers.

We study the influence of global, local and community-level risk perception on the extinction probability of a disease in several models of social networks. In particular, we study the infection progression as a susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) model on several modular networks, formed by a certain number of random and scale-free communities. We find that in the scale-free networks the progression is faster than in random ones with the same average connectivity degree. For what concerns the role of perception, we find that the knowledge of the infection level in one’s own neighborhood is the most effective property in stopping the spreading of a disease, but at the same time the more expensive one in terms of the quantity of required information, thus the cost/effectiveness optimum is a tradeoff between several parameters. © institute for computer Sciences, Social informatics and Telecommunications Engineering 2014.

We present a programming methodology and runtime performance case study comparing the declarative data flow coordination language S-Net with Intel's Concurrent Collections (CnC). As a coordination language S-Net achieves a near-complete separation of concerns between sequential software components implemented in a separate algorithmic language and their parallel orchestration in an asynchronous data flow streaming network. We investigate the merits of S-Net and CnC with the help of a relevant and non-trivial linear algebra problem: tiled Cholesky decomposition. We describe two alternative S-Net implementations of tiled Cholesky factorization and compare them with two CnC implementations, one with explicit performance tuning and one without, that have previously been used to illustrate Intel CnC. Our experiments on a 48-core machine demonstrate that S-Net manages to outperform CnC on this problem.

Next-generation wireless networks integrate multiple wireless access technologies to provide seamless wireless connectivity for mobile nodes (MNs). When MNs move in wireless heterogeneous networks, they may suffer from the great degradation of received signal strength (RSS) and further quality of services (QoS), if randomly selecting an access point (AP). We address vertical handoff with game theory to enable MNs to trigger the handoff and select an appropriate network from multiple wireless access technologies. On the other hand, the existing vertical handoff schemes lack of jointly considering the behaviors of MNs and APs for approaching the reality. To solve this problem, we propose a repeated game based scheme for vertical handoff. Each sub-game is formulated as a non-cooperative strategic game between a MN and an AP in which the Nash equilibrium is the solution of each strategic game. The proposed repeated game is to optimize the utility functions of the whole network by finding an equilibrium point. We perform the performance analysis, which shows that proposed scheme can achieve better bandwidth utilization and throughput of the network compared to the AP random selection scheme.

Autonomous robots can be used to perform reconnaissance missions in disaster scenarios when the safety of humans cannot be guaranteed. We developed an interdisciplinary approach to autonomous team-based exploration in such settings. The introduced system architecture consists of robust communication and reactive task allocation, built upon a research robot platform. A team of robots autonomously executes exploration tasks deploying a long-term sensor network. All robots and sensors are linked through the so-called distributed common information model (dCIM), which is the global knowledge base of our system. It enables the robots to share a unified environment model and to perform dynamic task scheduling. All key soft-and hardware elements presented in this paper have been prototypically implemented and tested.
