In a series of paper the authors proposed a new frequency-domain approach to identify poles in discrete-time linear systems. The discrete rational transfer function is represented in a rational Laguerre-basis, where the basis elements are expressed by powers of the Blaschke-function. This function can be interpreted as a congruence transform on the Poincaré unit disc model of the hyperbolic geometry. The identification of a pole is given as a hyperbolic transform of the limit of a quotient-sequence formed from the Laguerre-Fourier coefficients. In this paper the opportunities of reliably computing the poles are analyzed, and some algorithms are proposed for practical use.

Recently, the authors described a new algorithm for ultrasonic Doppler imaging and velocity estimation using log-step multicarrier signals. The algorithm achieved a velocity estimation precision that was some 20 times better than that using an existing method, but the problem of estimation deficiency in low-SNR conditions remained. In this work, we improve the availability of the algorithm in low-SNR conditions by utilizing the systematic temporal shift of the log-step multicarrier signals, which expresses approximately the amount of Doppler shift in the sensed signal. A computer simulation shows high availability for the algorithm, even for SNR values below -10 dB.

System-level design space exploration (DSE), which is performed early in the design process, is of eminent importance to the design of complex multi-processor embedded system architectures. During system-level DSE, system parameters like, e.g., the number and type of processors, the type and size of memories, or the mapping of application tasks to architectural resources, are considered. Simulation-based DSE, in which different design instances are evaluated using system-level simulations, typically are computationally costly. Even using high-level simulations and efficient exploration algorithms, the simulation time to evaluate design points forms a real bottleneck in such DSE. Therefore, the vast design space that needs to be searched requires effective design space pruning techniques. This paper presents a technique to reduce the number of simulations needed during system-level DSE. More specifically, we propose an iterative design space pruning methodology based on static throughput analysis of different application mappings. By interleaving these analytical throughput estimations with simulations, our hybrid approach can significantly reduce the number of simulations that are needed during the process of DSE.

Recently, the DBpedia community has experienced an immense increase in activity and we believe, that the time has come to explore the connection between DBpedia & Natural Language Processing (NLP) in a yet unprecedented depth. DBpedia has a long-standing tradition to provide useful data as well as a commitment to reliable Semantic Web technologies and living best practices. As the extraction of the Wikipedia's infoboxes by DBpedia matures, we can shift our focus to new challenges such as extracting information from an unstructured article text as well as becoming a testing ground for multilingual NLP methods. DBpedia has the potential to create an upward knowledge acquisition spiral as it provides a small amount of general knowledge allowing to process text, derive more knowledge, validate this knowledge and improve text processing methods. The goal of this workshop was to present existing research, systems and resources, but also to allow discussion about different points of convergence and divergence of the NLP and DBpedia community with a special focus on challenges that lie ahead. We would like to take part in the debate on how to use DBpedia for NLP and NLP for DBpedia.

Reversible circuits build the basis for emerging technologies like quantum computation and have promising applications in domains like low power design. Hence, much progress in the development of design solutions for this kind of circuits has been made in the last decade. In this paper, we provide an overview on reversible circuits as well as their applications. We discuss recent accomplishments and, finally, have a look on future challenges in the design of circuits for this emerging technology. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

A measurement of the Higgs boson mass is presented based on the combined data samples of the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the CERN LHC in the H→γγ and H→ZZ→4ℓ decay channels. The results are obtained from a simultaneous fit to the reconstructed invariant mass peaks in the two channels and for the two experiments. The measured masses from the individual channels and the two experiments are found to be consistent among themselves. The combined measured mass of the Higgs boson is mH=125.09±0.21 (stat)±0.11 (syst) GeV.

With the increasing performance demand in real-time systems it becomes more and more relevant to provide feed-back to engineers and programmers, but also software development tools, on the performance-relevant code parts of a real-time program. So far, the information provided to programmers through tools was limited to an estimation of the worst-case execution time (WCET) and its associated worst-case execution path (WCEP). However, these metrics only provide partial information. Only those code parts that are on one of the WCEPs are indicated to the programmer. No information is provided for all other code parts. To give an accurate view covering the entire code base, tools in the spirit of standard program profiling tools are required. This work proposes an efficient approach to compute worst-case timing information for all code parts of a program using a complementary metric, called criticality. Every statement of a real-time program is assigned a criticality value, expressing how critical the respective code is with respect to the global WCET. This gives an accuratc view to programmers how closc the worst execution path passing through a specific part of a real-time program is to the global WCEP. We formally define the criticality metric and investigate some of its properties with respect to dominance in control-flow graphs. Exploiting some of those properties, we propose an algorithm that reduces tlic overhead of computing the metric to cover complete real-time programs. Copyright 2012 ACM.

It is often the case that traditional media provide coverage of a news event on the basis of journalists' viewpoints - a problem termed in the literature as media bias. On the other hand social media have given birth to an alternative paradigm of journalism known as "citizen journalism". We take advantage of citizen journalism to detect the bias in traditional media and propose a simple model for empirical measurement of media bias. Copyright is held by the author/owner(s).

In a model-driven service-oriented architecture (SOA), the services are in large parts generated from models. To facilitate monitoring, governance, and self-adaptation the information in these models can be used by services that monitor, manage, or adapt the SOA at runtime. If a service for monitoring, management, or adaptation in an SOA is dependent on models, and the metamodel changes, usually the service needs to be manually adapted to work with the new version, recompiled, and redeployed. This manual effort impedes the use of models at runtime. To address this problem, this paper introduces model-aware services that work with models at runtime. These services are supported using a service environment, called Morse. Hiding the complexity of implicit versioning of models from users while respecting the principle of Universally Unique Identifiers (UUIDs), it realizes a novel transparent UUID-based model versioning technique. It uses the model-driven approach to automatically generate and deploy Morse services that are used by the model-aware services to access models in the correct version. In this way, monitoring and adaptation in SOAs can be better supported, and the manual effort to evolve services for monitoring, management, or adaptation, which are based on models at runtime, can be minimized.
