Embedded systems for Real-Time Multimedia (ESTIMedia)

The complexity of today's embedded systems forces designers to model and simulate systems and their components to explore the wide range of design choices. Such design space exploration is especially needed during the early design stages, where the design space is at its largest. Due to the exponential design space in real problems, evaluating and comparing every single point in the design space is infeasible. Therefore, heuristic search techniques, such as Evolutionary Algorithms (EA), are often used to search the design space for optimum design points using only a finite number of design-point evaluations. Understanding how the design space was searched by such searching algorithms and providing insight into the ¿landscape¿ of the design space, may be of invaluable importance to the designer, To this end, this paper presents a novel interactive visualization application, based on tree visualization, to understand the search dynamics of an evolutionary algorithm and to visualize where the optimum design points are located in the design space.

The aspect of human interaction becomes more and more relevant for service-oriented applications. On one hand, current development approaches support the composition of services but neglect the creation of user interfaces. On the other hand, task-based modeling of user interactions is well established but poorly integrated into service-oriented development. In this paper we propose an integrated modelling approach for the task-driven development of interactive service-oriented applications. Our central concept is the introduction of annotations as part of the Web service description. These annotations cover information relevant for the semi-automatic generation of task models and user interfaces. We present the annotation concept as well as concepts for the integration of the annotations into a task-driven software development methodology.

Multicycle instruction set extensions (ISE) can be pipelined in order to increase their throughput; however, typical program traces seldom contain consecutive calls to the same ISE that would allow this temporal parallelism. Often, there are intermittent calls to branch instructions, at a minimum, that prevent the pipelined execution of subsequent calls to the same ISE within a loop. What is needed is ISEs that cover an entire loop body, which can create a stream of repeated calls to the same ISE during program execution; this, in turn, permits the use of hardware pipelining. To address this concern, we introduce a new type of ISE that borrows ideas from zero overhead loop instructions to permit pipelined execution of loops. To further expose instruction level parallelism, the ISE supports loops whose bodies form hyperblocks, which are regions of program control flow that have multiple exits (including loop iterations and break points within loops). These ISEs broaden the scope of instruction level parallelism and obtain higher speed ups compared to traditional ISEs, primarily through pipelining, the exploitation of spatial parallelism, and reducing the overhead of control flow statements and branches.

The paper presents a new systematic analysis method in order to estimate the total absorbed power and energy in linear electric and magnetic circuits with modifiable parameters. The relation between the variation in one or all the resistances and reluctances of the networks and the variation of total absorbed power and energy are discussed using the Lagrange's method. For the considered applications the results are obtained with Mathematica and Maple useful for establishing the variation limits of absorbed power and energy.

In this paper, two approaches to utilizing contextual information in semantic image analysis are presented and comparatively evaluated. Both approaches make use of spatial context in the form of fuzzy directional relations. The first one is based on a Genetic Algorithm (GA), which is employed in order to decide upon the optimal semantic image interpretation by treating semantic image analysis as a global optimization problem. On the other hand, the second method follows a Binary Integer Programming (BIP) technique for estimating the optimal solution. Both spatial context techniques are evaluated with several different combinations of classifiers and low-level features, in order to demonstrate the improvements attained using spatial context in a number of different image analysis schemes.

An extension of the pairwise comparison matrix is considered when some comparisons are missing. A generalization of the eigenvector method for the incomplete case is introduced and discussed as well as the Logarithmic Least Squares Method. The uniqueness problem regarding both weighting methods is studied through the graph representation of pairwise comparison matrices. It is shown that the optimal completion/solution is unique if and only if the graph associated with the incomplete pairwise comparison matrix is connected. An algorithm is proposed for solving the eigenvalue minimization problem related to the generalization of the eigenvector method in the incomplete case. Numerical examples are presented for illustration of the methods discussed in the paper.

This report summarizes the proceedings of the one day BioSharing meeting held at the Intelligent systems for Molecular Biology (ISMB) 2010 conference in Boston, MA, USA This inaugural BioSharing event was hosted by the Genomic Standards Consortium as part of its M3 & BioSharing special interest group (SIG) workshop. The BioSharing event included invited talks from a range of community leaders and a panel discussion at the end of the day. The panel session led to the formal agreement among community leaders to join together to promote cross-community knowledge exchange and collaborations. A key focus of the newly formed Biosharing community will be linking up resources to promote real-world data sharing (virtuous cycle of data) and supporting compliance with data policies through the creation of a one-stop-portal of information. Proposed in the 1980s, the sparse distributed memory (SDM) is a model of an associative memory based on the properties of a high dimensional binary space. This model has received some attention from researchers of different areas and has been improved over time. However, a few problems have to be solved when using it in practice, due to the non-randomness characteristics of the actual data. We tested an SDM using different forms of encoding the information, and in two different domains: robot navigation and manipulation. Our results show that the performance of the SDM in the two domains is affected by the way the information is actually encoded, and may be improved by some small changes in the model.

This report summarizes the proceedings of the second workshop of the 'Minimum Information for Biological and Biomedical Investigations' (MIBBI) consortium held on Dec 1-2, 2010 in Rüdesheim, Germany through the sponsorship of the Beilstein-institute. MIBBI is an umbrella organization uniting communities developing Minimum Information (MI) checklists to standardize the description of data sets, the workflows by which they were generated and the scientific context for the work. This workshop brought together representatives of more than twenty communities to present the status of their MI checklists and plans for future development. Shared challenges and solutions were identified and the role of MIBBI in MI checklist development was discussed. The meeting featured some thirty presentations, wide-ranging discussions and breakout groups. The top outcomes of the two-day workshop as defined by the participants were: 1) the chance to share best practices and to identify areas of synergy; 2) defining a series of tasks for updating the MIBBI Portal; 3) reemphasizing the need to maintain independent MI checklists for various communities while leveraging common terms and workflow elements contained in multiple checklists; and 4) revision of the concept of the MIBBI Foundry to focus on the creation of a core set of MIBBI modules intended for reuse by individual MI checklist projects while maintaining the integrity of each MI project. The notion of the mobile agent has been around for over a decade in order to capture the new form of computation in communication networks. A mobile agent is a computing entity which can move around different hosts on the network, carrying its state and procedures. Mobile Object-Z (MobiOZ), which is designed to provide a practical means to the specifiers who are working on mobile agent applications, is an extended notation of Object-Z, with mobile and communication primitives for specifying and verifying mobile agent applications. In this paper, we will give an overview of the MobiOZ notation and present its semantic foundation, then demonstrate how the specifications in MobiOZ can be simulated and verified by SPIN, a model checker, by translating MobiOZ specifications into PROcess MEta LAnguage (PROMELA), a process-based formal specification language of SPIN. © 2008, Inderscience Publishers.
