Embedding of integrated systems via Additive Manufacturing (AM) offers the potential to save weight, space, and time in the production of electronics and vehicles. Of specific interest are embedded electrical systems that operate in the radiofrequency (RF) range as they have great potential utility in communication systems and aircraft avionics including navigation. However, systems in this frequency range pose unique manufacturing challenges such as the need to minimize impedance discontinuities in the system. In this work, the authors explore various techniques for embedding RF structures such as antennas and filters via a multi-material jetting AM process. Specifically, the dielectric constants and loss tangents of Vero White and Tango Black polymers were determined to facilitate the design of RF structures with these materials. It is shown that measurements of S-parameters of the resultant embedded RF structures approach or match the performance of non-embedded electronics. © SFF *** rights reserved.

Memristor-based crossbar architectures have proven highly effective for matrix vector multiplication (MVM) operations, making them a promising solution for accelerating the MVMs widely used in precoding algorithms for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) wireless communication systems. However, real-world implementation of memristor-based computing systems face challenges due to commonly observed non-idealities in both the devices themselves and the circuits they’re built into. To facilitate a rapid design flow and investigate the impact of non-idealities, an integrated open-source simulation framework MemMIMO is developed. The simulation framework estimates the accuracy and hardware performance of the computing system, offering a variety of flexible design options. MemMIMO integrates a behavioral model of the mix-signal architecture with a digital front-end. There are three major building blocks in MemMIMO: the device fitting block, the mapping block, and the performance estimation block. These blocks work together to map the complex MVMs in precoding algorithms for MIMO systems to crossbar-based architectures that incorporate memristor models characterized by physical device behavior. Using two typical use cases targeting six-generation (6G) massive MIMO communication as case studies, MemMIMO is used to model different memristor devices, explore the impact of non-idealities on system accuracy, and benchmark circuit-level performance metrics including area, speed, and power. © 1982-2012 IEEE.

This paper proposes a decentralized excitation control method based on synchronized estimation using asynchronous measurements from voltage/current transformers (VT/CT), addressing the challenges of decentralized excitation control caused by asynchronous updates. Due to the high cost and limited use of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs), synchronized generator output measurements are often not feasible. The proposed method establishes a framework for decentralized excitation control that aligns with synchronized estimation in multi-machine power systems. It develops an estimation model for synchronized acquisition of excitation control feedback inputs, even under asynchronous sampling conditions. Simulation results using IEEE standard test systems demonstrate that synchronized estimated values offer a more accurate representation of the system’s status compared to asynchronous measurements, with better compatibility with the network structure. The findings show that decentralized excitation control based on synchronized estimation significantly enhances power system stability compared to traditional control methods that rely on asynchronous feedback.

—Large-scale centralized development of wind and solar energy and peer-to-grid transmission of renewable energy source (RES) via high voltage direct current (HVDC) has been regarded as one of the most promising ways to achieve goals of peak carbon and carbon neutrality in China. Traditionally, large-scale thermal generation is needed to economically support the load demand of HVDC with a given profile, which in turn raises concerns about carbon emissions. To address the issues above, hydrogen energy storage system (HESS) and ammonia energy storage system (AESS) are introduced to gradually replace thermal generation, which is represented as a multi-stage expansion planning (MSEP) problem. Specifically, first, HESS and AESS are established in the MSEP model with carbon emission reduction constraints, and yearly data with hourly time resolution are utilized for each stage to well describe the intermittence of RES. Then, a combined Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition (DWD) and column generation (CG) solution approach is proposed to efficiently solve the large-scale MSEP model. Finally, a real-life system in China is studied. The results indicate that HESS and AESS have the potential to handle the intermittence of RES, as well as the monthly imbalance between RES and load demand. Especially under the goal of carbon neutrality, the contribution of HESS and AESS in reducing levelized cost of energy (LCOE) reaches 12.28% and 14.59%, respectively, which finally leads to a LCOE of 0.4324 RMB/kWh. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) enable more efficient and sustainable transportation systems. Ample studies have shown that controlling a small fraction of AVs can smooth traffic flow and mitigate traffic congestion. However, deploying AVs to real-world systems is challenging due to transparency and safety concerns. An alternative approach deployable in the imminent future is human-compatible driving, where human drivers are guided by real-time instructions to stabilize the traffic. To respect human drivers’ reaction time $\Delta$, a class of piecewise-constant policies is considered, where periodic instructions are given at every $\Delta$ seconds to human drivers, who hold the instructed action constant until the next instruction. While previous work provides a basic theoretical analysis by considering a single driver setting in the absence of traffic, a principled control theoretic analysis that takes into account the full traffic system is lacking. This work uses Lyapunov stability theory to analyze piecewise-constant policies in a traffic system governed by the Optimal Velocity Model (OVM). We provide sufficient conditions for piecewise-constant controls with hold length $\Delta$ to stabilize the system. Numerical simulations demonstrate that our theoretical analyses closely follow simulated results, and can be used to interpret meaningful relationships between system parameters and maximum stable hold lengths.

This paper proposes incentive mechanisms that promote eco-driving in transportation networks with the overarching objective of minimizing emissions. The transportation system operator provides the drivers with energy-efficient driving guidance throughout their trips, and their eco-driving levels are measured by how closely they follow this guidance via vehicle telematics. Drivers choose their eco-driving levels to optimize a combination of their travel times and their emissions. To obtain optimal budget allocation and recommendations for the incentive mechanism, the system operator gathers drivers’ preferences, or types, to assess each driver’s trip urgency and natural willingness to eco-drive. In a setting where drivers truthfully report their types, we introduce the first-best incentive mechanism and show that the obedience condition holds (i.e., drivers find it optimal to comply with the system operator’s recommendations) when the recommended eco-driving profile constitutes a Nash equilibrium. Moreover, in a setting where drivers can strategically report their types, we introduce the second-best incentive mechanism and show that the proposed mechanism is incentive-compatible (i.e., drivers find it optimal to be truthful). Under this mechanism, we also show that all equilibrium outcomes are at least as good as the recommended eco-driving profile in terms of the system operator’s objective. Overall, this work offers a framework for designing eco-driving incentive mechanisms while considering both the strategic behavior of individual drivers and the network effects of collective decision-making. © 2024, CC BY.

During the coal seam drilling process, the drill string is subject to compressive deformation, compounded by unpredictable variations in formation hardness and borehole wall friction, leading to challenges in maintaining a stable feeding speed. This paper presents a novel approach by introducing uncertain parameters to describe the effects of formation hardness and borehole wall friction. Drill string axial movement model is modeled as a polyhedral system based on a lumped parameter representation. To meet industrial performance requirements, we design a robust $H_{\infty}$ controller to achieve consistent feeding speed control. Our simulation results demonstrate the controller's effectiveness in ensuring system stability despite fluctuations in formation hardness and drill string friction.

Multispectral images and leaf-clip measurements were used for evaluating the Chlorophyll (Chl) content on grapevine leaves through the use of vegetation indices. The multispectral leaf images were taken by a sensor onboard an UAS, which was placed over a table at a height of 70 cm. Images were radiometrically and geometrically processed to obtain accurate coregistered five band image stacks. Using a Kmeans segmentation, each leaf imaged in a multispectral image was automatically detected and the mean leaf reflectance values were used to compute three vegetation indices: NDVI, NDRE, and GLI. When compared to leaf-clip measurements, the results indicated that the NDRE index was the best predictor of Chl leaf content (R2=0.81). The obtained NDRE regression model can be used in UAS-based multispectral orthomosaics to generate canopy Chl maps at vine-row scale, which can assist vine growers in monitoring the spatial and temporal variability of grapevine vigor.

A multi-modal emotion recognition method based on facial multi-scale features and cross-modal attention (MS-FCA) network is proposed. The MSFCA model improves the traditional single-branch ViT network into a two-branch ViT architecture by using classification tokens in each branch to interact with picture embeddings in the other branch, which facilitates effective interactions between different scales of information. Subsequently, audio features are extracted using ResNet18 network. The cross-modal attention mechanism is used to obtain the weight matrices between different modal features, making full use of inter-modal correlation and effectively fusing visual and audio features for more accurate emotion recognition. Two datasets are used for the experiments: eNTERFACE'05 and REDVESS dataset. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the proposed method on the eNTERFACE'05 and REDVESS datasets is 85.42% and 83.84% respectively, which proves the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2025 IEEE.

Optimal Sizing of Isolated Renewable Power systems with Ammonia Synthesis: Model and Solution Approach

Isolated renewable power to ammonia (IRePtA) has been recognized as a promising way to decarbonize the chemical industry. Optimal sizing of the renewable power system is significant to improve the techno-economic of IRePtA since the investment of power sources exceeds 80% of the total investment. However, multi-timescale electricity, hydrogen, and ammonia storages, minimum power supply for system safety, and the multiyear uncertainty of renewable generation lead to difficulties in planning. To address the issues above, an IGDT-MILFP model is proposed. First, the levelized cost of ammonia (LCOA) is directly formulated as the objective, rendering a mixed integer linear fractional programming (MILFP) problem. Information gap decision theory (IGDT) is utilized to handle the multiyear uncertainty of renewable generation. Second, a combined Charnes-Cooper (C&C) transformation and Branch-and-Bound (B&B) method is proposed to efficiently solve the large-scale IGDT-MILFP model, giving robust and opportunistic planning results. Then, Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling-based posteriori analysis is leveraged to quantify the long-run performance. Finally, a real-life system in Inner Mongolia, China, is studied. The results indicate that the proposed methods could reduce the computational burden by orders of magnitude for solving a large-scale MILFP problem. Moreover, the proposed IGDT-MILFP model is necessary and accurate to obtain an optimal capacity allocation with the lowest expected LCOA (3610 RMB/t) in long-run simulations.
