Energy-Efficient Resource Optimization for Massive MIMO Networks Considering Network Load

This paper investigates the resource optimization problem for a multi-cell massive multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO)network in which each base station(BS)is equipped with a large number of antennas and each base station(BS)adapts the number of antennas to the daily load profile(DLP).This paper takes into consideration user location distribution(ULD)variation and evaluates its impact on the energy efficiency of load adaptive massive MIMO *** variation is modeled by dividing the cell into two coverage areas with different user densities:boundary focused(BF)and center focused(CF)*** cells are assumed identical in terms of BS configurations,cell loading,and ULD variation and each BS is modeled as an M/G/m/m state dependent queue that can serve a maximum number of users at the peak *** with energy efficiency(EE)we analyzed deployment and spectrum efficiency in our adaptive massive MIMO system by evaluating the impact of cell size,available bandwidth,output power level of the BS,and maximum output power of the power amplifier(PA)at different cell *** also analyzed average energy consumption on an hourly basis per BS for the model proposed for data traffic in Europe and also the model proposed for business,residential,street,and highway areas.

The popularity of quadrotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicles(UAVs)stems from their simple propulsion systems and structural ***,their complex and nonlinear dynamic behavior presents a significant challenge for control,necessitating sophisticated algorithms to ensure stability and accuracy in *** strategies have been explored by researchers and control engineers,with learning-based methods like reinforcement learning,deep learning,and neural networks showing promise in enhancing the robustness and adaptability of quadrotor control *** paper investigates a Reinforcement Learning(RL)approach for both high and low-level quadrotor control systems,focusing on attitude stabilization and position tracking tasks.A novel reward function and actor-critic network structures are designed to stimulate high-order observable states,improving the agent’s understanding of the quadrotor’s dynamics and environmental *** address the challenge of RL hyper-parameter tuning,a new framework is introduced that combines Simulated Annealing(SA)with a reinforcement learning algorithm,specifically Simulated Annealing-Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient(SA-TD3).This approach is evaluated for path-following and stabilization tasks through comparative assessments with two commonly used control methods:Backstepping and Sliding Mode Control(SMC).While the implementation of the well-trained agents exhibited unexpected behavior during real-world testing,a reduced neural network used for altitude control was successfully implemented on a Parrot Mambo mini *** results showcase the potential of the proposed SA-TD3 framework for real-world applications,demonstrating improved stability and precision across various test scenarios and highlighting its feasibility for practical deployment.

Characterizing Structured versus Unstructured Environments based on Pedestrians’ and Vehicles’ Motion Trajectories

Trajectory behaviours of pedestrians and vehicles operating close to each other can be different in unstructured compared to structured environments. These differences in the motion behaviour are valuable to be considered in the trajectory prediction algorithm of an autonomous vehicle. However, the available datasets on pedestrians’ and vehicles’ trajectories that are commonly used as benchmarks for trajectory prediction have not been classified based on the nature of their environment. On the other hand, the definitions provided for unstructured and structured environments are rather qualitative and hard to be used for justifying the type of a given environment. In this paper, we have compared different existing datasets based on a couple of extracted trajectory features, such as mean speed and trajectory variability. Through K-means clustering and generalized linear models, we propose more quantitative measures for distinguishing the two different types of environments. Our results show that features such as trajectory variability, stop fraction and density of pedestrians are different among the two environmental types and can be used to classify the existing datasets. Detecting P300 event-related potentials (ERPs) from electroencephalography (EEG) finds applications in several domains including brain computer interfaces (BCIs). Due to the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), however, detecting P300 from single trials has been challenging. As a result, multiple repetitions are typically needed, extending the BCI decision time. To address this problem, in this paper, we present TopoEEG, a novel method that generates a sequence of topography-based images from EEG, to capture both spatial and temporal information. These sequences are subsequently processed using the state-of-the-art video classification technique, TimeSformer. Evaluated using the BCI Competition II (IIb) dataset, results demonstrate that TopoEEG achieves single-trial P300 detection with F1-scores of 0.6830 and 0.7134 within the first 500 ms and 600 ms, respectively. These results highlight TopoEEG's potential to enhance the efficiency and speed of BCIs by reducing the need for multiple repetitions and the time required for decision-making in single-trial P300 detection.

Underwater computer vision applications are challenged by limited access to annotated underwater datasets. Additionally, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) trained on in-air datasets do not perform well underwater due to the high domain variance caused by the degradation impact of the water column. This paper proposes an air-to-water dataset generator to create visually plausible underwater scenes out of existing in-air datasets. SubmergeStyleGAN, a generative adversarial network (GAN) designed to model attenuation, backscattering, and absorption, utilizes depth maps to apply range-dependent attenuation style transfer. In this work, the generated attenuated images and their corresponding original pairs are used to train an underwater image enhancement CNN. Real underwater datasets were used to validate the proposed approach by assessing various image quality metrics, including UCIQE, UIQM and CCF, as well as disparity estimation accuracy before and after enhancement. SubmergeStyleGAN exhibits a faster and more robust training procedure compared to existing methods in the literature. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents novel sub-harmonic synchronous machines having series or parallel permanent magnet structures on rotors for better performance in terms of greater torque density. The stator of the machines has two sets of three-phase winding, where the additional winding is used to generate sub-harmonic magnetomotive force components for brushless operation. Similar to the stator, the rotor of them uses an additional winding to induce that sub-harmonic component. Rotor also uses a permanent magnet to improve machine performance in series or parallel hybrid structures having conventional or consequent pole permanent magnet structures. In this paper, 4 different rotors, 3 having hybrid excitation, are used and their performance is compared. To validate the performance, a 2D finite element analysis of 8 poles and 48 slots of sub-harmonic synchronous machines is carried out with different rotors. Finally, the wide-speed operation of the proposed machine is discussed. © 2023 IEEE.

Bremsstrahlung—the spontaneous emission of broadband radiation from free electrons that are deflected by atomic nuclei—contributes to the majority of X-rays emitted from X-ray tubes and used in applications ranging from medical imaging to semiconductor chip ***,we show that the bremsstrahlung intensity can be enhanced significantly—by more than three orders of magnitude—through shaping the electron wavefunction to periodically overlap with atoms in crystalline ***,we show how to shape the bremsstrahlung X-ray emission pattern into arbitrary angular emission profiles for purposes such as unidirectionality and ***,we find that these enhancements and shaped emission profiles cannot be attributed solely to the spatial overlap between the electron probability distribution and the atomic centers,as predicted by the paraxial and nonrecoil theory for free electron light *** work highlights an unprecedented regime of free electron light emission where electron waveshaping provides multi-dimensional control over practical radiation processes like *** results pave the way towards greater versatility in table-top X-ray sources and improved fundamental understanding of quantum electron-light interactions.

Prior to the introduction of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), modelling and analyzing irregular data, particularly graphs, was thought to be the Achilles' heel of deep learning. The core concept of GNNs is to find a representation by recursively aggregating the representations of a central node and those of its neighbor, and many GNNs' designs have demonstrated its success. However, most only focus on using the first-order information between a node and its neighbors. In this paper, we introduce a central node permutation variant function through a frustratingly simple and innocent-looking modification to the core operation of a GNN, namely the Feature cOrrelation aGgregation (FOG) module, which learns the second-order information from feature correlation between a node and its neighbors in the pipeline. By adding FOG into existing variants of GNNs, we empirically verify this second-order information complements the features generated by original GNNs across a broad set of benchmarks. A tangible boost in the model's performance is observed where the model surpasses previous state-of-the-art results by a significant margin while employing fewer parameters. e.g., 26.202% improvement on a real-world molecular dataset using graph convolutional networks. © 2023 IEEE.
