Optimal Price-maker Trading Strategy of Wind Power Producer Using Virtual Bidding

As distributed learning applications like Federated Learning, the Internet of Things (IoT), and Edge Computing expand, addressing their limitations becomes crucial. We approach decentralized learning across a network of communicating clients or nodes, focusing on two primary challenges: data heterogeneity and adversarial robustness. To address these, we introduce a decentralized minimax optimization method incorporating two key components: local updates and gradient tracking. Minimax optimization serves as a fundamental tool for adversarial training, ensuring robustness. Local updates are vital in Federated Learning (FL) to alleviate the communication bottleneck, while gradient tracking is necessary to demonstrate convergence amid data heterogeneity. Our analysis of the proposed algorithm, Dec-Fed Track, in nonconvex-strongly-concave minimax optimization demonstrates its convergence to a stationary point. Additionally, numerical experiments support our theoretical results. © 2024 IEEE.

In the original publication, the author has found few errors in the figures 2, 4, 11 and 12 which significantly impact both the paper's quality and the reputation of the journal. These issues undermine the clarity of the methodology and the novelty of the research. 1. Each column represents a different case in the experiment, corresponding to the number of UAVs in both the obstacle-free and obstacle areas. With more inverter-based resources (IBRs), our power systems have lower frequency nadirs following N-1 contingencies, and undesired under-frequency load shedding (UFLS) can occur. To address this challenge, IBRs can be programmed to provide at least three types of fast frequency response (FFR), e.g., step response, proportional response (P/f droop response), and derivative response (synthetic inertia). However, these heterogeneous FFR challenge the study of power system frequency dynamics. Thus, this paper develops an analytical frequency nadir prediction method that allows for the consideration of all three potential forms of FFR provided by IBRs. The proposed method provides fast and accurate frequency nadir estimation after N-1 generation tripping contingencies. Our method is grounded on the closed-form solution for the frequency nadir, which is solved from the second-order system frequency response model considering the governor dynamics and three types of FFR. The simulation results in the IEEE 39-bus system with different types of FFR demonstrate that the proposed method provides an accurate and fast prediction of the frequency nadir under various disturbances. © Energynautics GmbH.

Minimax problems have attracted much attention due to various applications in constrained optimization problems and zero-sum games. Identifying saddle points within these problems is crucial, and saddle flow dynamics offer a straightforward yet useful approach. This study focuses on a class of bilinearly coupled minimax problems with strongly convex-linear objective functions. We design an accelerated algorithm based on saddle flow dynamics, achieving a convergence rate beyond the stereotype limit (the strong convexity constant). The algorithm is derived from a sequential two-step transformation of a given objective function. First, a change of variables is applied to render the objective function better-conditioned, introducing strong concavity (from linearity) while preserving strong convexity. Second, proximal regularization, when staggered with the first step, further enhances the strong convexity of the objective function by shifting some of the obtained strong concavity. After these transformations, saddle flow dynamics based on the new objective function can be tuned for accelerated exponential convergence. Besides, such an approach can be extended to weakly convex-weakly concave functions and still guarantees exponential convergence to one stationary point. The theory is verified by a numerical test on an affine equality-constrained convex optimization problem. © 2024 IEEE.

Distributed Nash equilibrium for pursuit-evasion game with one evader and multiple pursuers

This paper investigates the pursuit-evasion problem involving one evader and multiple pursuers with limited sensing capability, where the evader tries to maximize the distance with the pursuers, while the pursuers have different objectives based on whether they can receive the information of the evader. The subgroup of pursuers who can observe the evader(called leaders) tries to be close to the evader, and the other subgroup of pursuers(called followers) tries to synchronize with their neighbors. When the subgraph formed by all leaders is complete, sufficient conditions are given to guarantee that the pursuers capture the evader and the pursuit-evasion game composed of the evader and leaders reaches Nash equilibrium. Furthermore, for the incomplete subgraph case, the distributed observers are proposed to estimate the relative positions between the evader and all leaders. It is shown that the distributed control strategy based on the observers converges exponentially to the Nash equilibrium solution, and makes the pursuers capture the evader. Finally, simulation examples are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategies.

This work concerns automation of the training process, using modern information technologies, including virtual reality (VR). The starting point is an observation that automotive and aerospace industries require effective methods of preparation of engineering personnel. In this context, the technological process of preparing operations of a CNC numerical machine has been extracted. On this basis, a dedicated virtual reality environment, simulating manufacturing of a selected aircraft landing gear component, was created. For a comprehensive analysis of the pros and cons of the proposed approach, four forms of training, involving a physical CNC machine, a physical simulator, a software simulator, and the developed VR environment were instantiated. The features of each training form were analysed in terms of their potential for industrial applications. A survey, using the Net Promoter Score method, was also conducted among a target group of engineers, regarding the potential of use of each training form. As a result, the advantages and disadvantages of all four training forms were captured. In today's rapidly evolving technological landscape, the need for efficient and reliable remote monitoring of under-water assets has never been more critical. A subsea cellular network solution ensures seamless connectivity and real-time data access to underwater assets such as marine robots and subsea IoT sensors, empowering organizations to optimize their operations and enhance asset management. With this need in mind, we present an underwater cellular network system that facilitates seamless communication with an arbitrary number of underwater assets and at the same time provides zero-overhead localization of the same. The presented system was tested out at sea in January 2024, and this paper describes in detail both the theoretical design of the system and the practical experience gained during these trials. © 2024 IEEE.

Abnormal climates due to global warming have emerged as a big concern in the global community. To mitigate climate change and achieve sustainability, distributed energy resources (DERs), including solar and wind, have been recently deployed in power systems. As the penetration level of DERs has increased, however, it caused a multitude of issues in the power systems, such as voltage fluctuation in the distribution network limiting renewable hosting capacity. On the other hand, the electric vehicle (EV) industry is rapidly growing to facilitate the transition to a carbon-neutral community, illuminating the potential of EVs as a flexible grid asset to mitigate some of the issues and improve grid operation, if properly exploited. To explore the potential of EVs, this paper proposes an EV scheduling strategy. By using an optimal EV charging scheduling proposed, distribution system operators (DSOs) can minimize their operating costs and stably operate the system with a high level of DERs. To validate the method, a modified IEEE 33-bus system with DERs is developed. The case study shows the proposed scheduling strategizes EV charging to reduce the cost of PV curtailment. In the study, the method outperforms the renewable-only case with curtailment by 4.97% in DSO cost. It also demonstrates its potential to increase the renewable hosting capacity by harmonizing EV charging with renewables. © 2023 The Korean Institute of Power Electronics.
