We present a multifractal artificial terrain generation method that uses the 3D Weierstrass-Mandelbrot function to control roughness. By varying the fractal dimension used in terrain generation across three different values, we generate 60 unique off-road terrains. We use gradient maps to categorize the roughness of each terrain, consisting of low-, semi-, and high-roughness areas. To test how the fractal dimension affects the difficulty of vehicle traversals, we measure the success rates, vertical accelerations, pitch and roll rates, and traversal times of an autonomous ground vehicle traversing 20 randomized straight-line paths in each terrain. As we increase the fractal dimension from 2.3 to 2.45 and from 2.45 to 2.6, we find that the median area of low-roughness terrain decreases 13.8% and 7.16%, the median area of semi-rough terrain increases 11.7% and 5.63%, and the median area of high-roughness terrain increases 1.54% and 3.33%, all respectively. We find that the median success rate of the vehicle decreases 22.5% and 25% as the fractal dimension increases from 2.3 to 2.45 and from 2.45 to 2.6, respectively. Successful traversal results show that the median root-mean-squared vertical accelerations, median root-mean-squared pitch and roll rates, and median traversal times all increase with the fractal dimension. © 2025, CC BY.

Recent innovations in devices, circuits, and systems have resulted in the widespread use of parallel and in-memory architectures for energy-efficient computing. However, the choice of signal representation within these architectures has received less attention. Nevertheless, computing using analog variables is known to be fundamentally more resource-efficient for low-and moderate-precision operations, making it of interest for applications, such as inference and real-time control, where high precision is not a requirement. However, well-known difficulties with scalability, programambility, and memory access have im-peded the realization of integrated analog computers (ACs) that can utilize these fundamental advantages. This paper provides a tutorial-style review of state-of-the-art integrated ACs and their advantages, including ultra-low latency and high energy-efficiency, for solving selected problems where clocked digital architectures are not resource-efficient.

Within the scope of prostate cancer diagnostic imaging, distinguishing lesions is challenging due to their subtle appearance and the prostate gland's complexity. This study employed the nnU-Net, a state-of-the-art medical image segmentation model, on a dataset of 301 patients from 2 openly available datasets to identify whether lesion sizes are affecting the model's performance. By applying t-SNE dimensionality reduction algorithm among dice score and respective lesion sizes, we found that nnU-Net behaves differently for lesions smaller than 9mm compared to lesions larger than 15mm. These insights can inform specialized training approaches for future deep learning models in prostate lesion *** Relevance: The main contributions of this study is, to investigate whether lesion sizes affects nnU-Net's deficiency leading to the development of more specialized models in respect to these factors. © 2023 IEEE.

This work demonstrates four grid service use cases using a service-oriented DER Management System within an Energy Grid of Things network. Imposed by a set of rules referred to as the Energy Service Interface, the DER Management System uses IEEE 2030.5 as its primary communication protocol. To simulate the efforts of Grid Operators, Grid Service Providers, and consumers to provide grid services, a co-simulation environment that leverages the GridAPPS-D simulation platform was developed. The results show that a service-oriented DER Management System provides a means of achieving reliable and impactful grid services while protecting customers' privacy and ensuring their agency over their Distributed Energy Resources.

Reverberation is ubiquitous in everyday listening environments, from meeting rooms to concert halls and recording studios. While reverberation is usually described by the reverberation time, getting further insight concerning the characteristics of a room requires to conduct acoustic measurements and calculate each reverberation parameter manually. In this study, we propose ReverbNet, an end-to-end deep learning-based system to non-intrusively estimate multiple reverberation parameters from a single speech utterance. The proposed approach is evaluated using simulated room reverberation by two popular effect processors. We show that the proposed approach can jointly estimate multiple reverberation parameters from speech signals and can generalise to unseen speakers and diverse simulated environments. The results also indicate that the use of multiple branches disentangles the embedding space from misalignments between input features and subtasks. © (2022) by the Audio engineering Society All rights reserved.

This article deals with designing an efficient post-quantum lattice based encryption scheme that relies on the multi-authority Ciphertext-Policy Attribute-Based Encryption (CP-ABE). The security of the proposed scheme is based on the hardness of the ring learning with errors (RLWE) problem. The construction of the proposed scheme is done using the Shamir's threshold secret sharing along with the Lagrange interpolation during the key generation and decryption processes in order to achieve the segmentation and restoration of private keys. A comparative study with the existing state of art schemes has been performed to show the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed scheme. Furthermore, experiments on the proposed scheme have been conducted to illustrate the computational time required during the key generation, encryption and decryption processes. © 2023 IEEE.

In this work, we studied the response of an antipodal Vivaldi antenna in the presence of different types of mice liver models. The scope of the study was limited to two types of liver diseases, i.e., nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and fibrosis. The complex dielectric properties of each liver type were measured using the open-ended coaxial probe dielectric spectroscopy method. A Vivaldi antenna for near-field sensing was designed and then simulated in CST Studio to determine the antenna characteristics. The antenna performance from the simulation matched the reflection coefficients (S11) measurements collected with the fabricated antenna in an anechoic chamber. This verified antenna was used for further measurements of different liver models placed near the antenna. The antenna response, S11 measurements, varied from one tissue type to another, demonstrating the potential of using the Vivaldi antenna as a near-field sensor to differentiate liver disease models from the healthy liver model. © 2023 IEEE.

ChatBCI: A P300 Speller BCI Leveraging Large Language Models for Improved Sentence Composition in Realistic Scenarios

P300 speller brain computer interfaces (BCIs) allow users to compose sentences by selecting target keys on a graphical user interface (GUI) through the detection of P300 component in their electroencephalogram (EEG) signals following visual stimuli. Most existing P300 speller BCIs require users to spell all or the first few initial letters of the intended word, letter by letter. Consequently, a large number of keystrokes are required to write a sentence, which can be time consuming, increasing user’s cognitive load and fatigue. Therefore, there is a need for more efficient and user-friendly methods for faster, and practical sentence composition. In this work, we introduce ChatBCI, a P300 speller BCI that leverages the zero-shot learning capabilities of large language models (LLMs) to suggest words from user-spelled initial letters or predict the subsequent word(s), reducing keystrokes and accelerating sentence composition. ChatBCI retrieves word suggestions through remote queries to the GPT-3.5 API. A new GUI, displaying GPT-3.5 word suggestions as extra keys is designed. Stepwise linear discriminant analysis (SWLDA) is used for the P300 classification. Seven subjects completed two online spelling tasks: 1) copy-spelling a self-composed sentence using ChatBCI, and 2) improvising a sentence using ChatBCI’s word suggestions. Results demonstrate that in Task 1, on average, ChatBCI outperforms letter-by-letter BCI spellers, reducing time and keystrokes by 62.14% and 53.22%, respectively, and increasing information transfer rate by 198.96%. In Task 2, ChatBCI achieves 80.68% keystroke savings and a record 8.53 characters/min for typing speed. Overall, ChatBCI by employing remote LLM queries enhances sentence composition in realistic scenarios, significantly outperforming traditional spellers without requiring local model training or storage.
