AI agents based on multimodal large language models (LLMs) are expected to revolutionize human-computer interaction and offer more personalized assistant services across various domains like healthcare, education, manufacturing, and entertainment. Deploying LLM agents in 6G networks enables users to access previously expensive AI assistant services via mobile devices democratically, thereby reducing interaction latency and better preserving user privacy. Nevertheless, the limited capacity of mobile devices constrains the effectiveness of deploying and executing local LLMs, which necessitates offloading complex tasks to global LLMs running on edge servers during long-horizon interactions. In this article, we propose a split learning system for LLM agents in 6G networks leveraging the collaboration between mobile devices and edge servers, where multiple LLMs with different roles are distributed across mobile devices and edge servers to perform user-agent interactive tasks collaboratively. In the proposed system, LLM agents are split into perception, grounding, and alignment modules, facilitating inter-module communications to meet extended user requirements on 6G network functions, including integrated sensing and communication, digital twins, and task-oriented communications. Furthermore, we introduce a novel model caching algorithm for LLMs within the proposed system to improve model utilization in context, thus reducing network costs of the collaborative mobile and edge LLM agents. © 2024, CC BY.

This study introduces a stainless steel microbial anode fabricated via advanced laser powder bed fusion, marking a transformative step in microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology. By leveraging this cutting-edge metal 3D printing approach, we achieve a 3D microporous structure with superior electrical conductivity, outstanding corrosion resistance in aquatic environments, robust mechanical strength, and adaptability for surface modification - essential attributes for sustainable, high-performance MFCs. The assembled MFC demonstrates unparalleled power output, along with exceptional durability and stability over multiple cycles, outperforming existing MFCs based on alternative 3D-printed substrates. This advancement not only solidifies the role of MFCs as a sustainable energy solution for powering on-chip electronics but also opens new avenues for scalable, cost-effective bioelectronic systems that align with the demands of next-generation technology. © 2025 IEEE.

IMPLICIT CAUSAL REPRESENTATION LEARNING VIA SWITCHABLE MECHANISMS

Learning causal representations from observational and interventional data in the absence of known ground-truth graph structures necessitates implicit latent causal representation learning. Implicit learning of causal mechanisms typically involves two categories of interventional data: hard and soft interventions. In real-world scenarios, soft interventions are often more realistic than hard interventions, as the latter require fully controlled environments. Unlike hard interventions, which directly force changes in a causal variable, soft interventions exert influence indirectly by affecting the causal mechanism. However, the subtlety of soft interventions impose several challenges for learning causal models. One challenge is that soft intervention's effects are ambiguous, since parental relations remain intact. In this paper, we tackle the challenges of learning causal models using soft interventions while retaining implicit modeling. We propose ICLR-SM, which models the effects of soft interventions by employing a causal mechanism switch variable designed to toggle between different causal mechanisms. The utilization of emergent generative artificial intelligence (GAI) within the realm of unmanned vehicles (UVs) can boost edge intelligence and potentially enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of rescue operations. However, to facilitate specialized generative edge intelligence in dynamic UV networks, GAI models need to tap into local data and conduct online fine-tuning, and the dispersed distribution of UVs makes distributed fine-tuning paradigms crucial. Although the federated generative model fine-tuning brings a potential solution, the large number of parameter transmissions involved in its fine-tuning process are often constrained by communication bottlenecks, which are more pronounced for resource-constrained UV networks. To cope with these challenges, we introduce an energy-efficient GAI model fine-tuning framework for the hierarchical UV networks, which employs over-the-air technology to save computational resource costs for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) during federated aggregation within a federated learning paradigm. Thereafter, we study the resource allocation problem in the fine-tuning process of the generative model and formulate a joint optimization problem for the bandwidth allocation, power control, computation resource allocation, and denoising factor control, aiming to minimize the system energy consumption. Then, we decouple the original problem into four tractable subproblems, and propose a block coordinate descent algorithm to solve them iteratively. Particularly, we derive a closed-form solution for the denoising factor to minimize the local model uploading transmission energy consumption under a specific AirComp communication error threshold. Simulation based on the state-of-the-art generative models shows that our AirComp-assisted federated generative model fine-tuning scheme can achieve satisfactory customized field-of-view image generation capability compared with the traditional fine-tuning scheme in an energy-efficient way. © 2015 I

The videoscope (VS) images have poor quality and low contrast. Hence, in this paper, three proposed frameworks to improve the quality of VS images are presented. The first framework depends on contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE) with adaptive gamma correction. The second framework depends on homomorphic processing. The third framework is based on the homomorphic enhancement with histogram equalization. The first one is superior from the entropy perspective, while the third one is superior from the contrast perspective. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

A comprehensive understanding of the topology of the electric power transmission network (EPTN) is essential for reliable and robust control of power systems. While existing research primarily relies on domain-specific methods, it lacks data-driven approaches that have proven effective in modeling the topology of complex systems. To address this gap, this paper explores the potential of data-driven methods for more accurate and adaptive solutions to uncover the true underlying topology of EPTNs. First, this paper examines Gaussian Graphical Models (GGM) to create an EPTN network graph (i.e., undirected simple graph). Second, to further refine and validate this estimated network graph, a physics-based, domain-specific refinement algorithm is proposed to prune false edges and construct the corresponding electric power flow network graph (i.e., directed multi-graph). The proposed method is tested using a synchrophasor dataset collected from a two-area, four-machine power system simulated on the real-time digital simulator (RTDS) platform. Experimental results show both the network and flow graphs can be reconstructed using various operating conditions and topologies with limited failure cases.

Guiding AI-Generated Digital Content with Wireless Perception

Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI), coupled with a surge in training data, have led to the widespread use of AI for digital content generation, with ChatGPT serving as an representative example. Despite the increased efficiency and diversity, the inherent instability of AI models poses a persistent challenge in guiding these models to produce the desired content for users. In this paper, we introduce an integration of wireless perception (WP) with AI-generated content (AIGC) and propose a unified WP-AIGC framework to improve the quality of digital content production. The framework employs a novel multi-scale perception technology to read user’s posture, which is difficult to describe accurately in words, and transmits it to the AIGC model as skeleton images. Based on these images and user’s service requirements, the AIGC model generates corresponding digital content. Since the production process imposes the user’s posture as a constraint on the AIGC model, it makes the generated content more aligned with the user’s requirements. Additionally, WP-AIGC can also accept user’s feedback, allowing adjustment of computing resources at edge server to improve service quality. Experiments results verify the effectiveness of the WP-AIGC framework, highlighting its potential as a novel approach for guiding AI models in the accurate generation of digital content. © 2023, CC BY.

Group scheduling problems have attracted much attention owing to their many practical *** work proposes a new bi-objective serial-batch group scheduling problem considering the constraints of sequence-dependent setup time,release time,and due *** is originated from an important industrial process,i.e.,wire rod and bar rolling process in steel production *** objective functions,i.e.,the number of late jobs and total setup time,are minimized.A mixed integer linear program is established to describe the *** obtain its Pareto solutions,we present a memetic algorithm that integrates a population-based nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II and two single-solution-based improvement methods,i.e.,an insertion-based local search and an iterated greedy *** computational results on extensive industrial data with the scale of a one-week schedule show that the proposed algorithm has great performance in solving the concerned problem and outperforms its *** high accuracy and efficiency imply its great potential to be applied to solve industrial-size group scheduling problems.

Defining Problem from Solutions: Inverse Reinforcement Learning (IRL) and Its Applications for Next-Generation Networking

Performance optimization is a critical concern in networking, on which Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) has achieved great success. Nonetheless, DRL training relies on precisely defined reward functions, which formulate the optimization objective and indicate the positive/negative progress towards the optimal. With the ever-increasing environmental complexity and human participation in Next-Generation Networking (NGN), defining appropriate reward functions become challenging. In this article, we explore the applications of Inverse Reinforcement Learning (IRL) in NGN. Particularly, if DRL aims to find optimal solutions to the problem, IRL finds a problem from the optimal solutions, where the optimal solutions are collected from experts, and the problem is defined by reward inference. Specifically, we first formally introduce the IRL technique, including its fundamentals, workflow, and difference from DRL. Afterward, we present the motivations of IRL applications in NGN and survey existing studies. Furthermore, to demonstrate the process of applying IRL in NGN, we perform a case study about human-centric prompt engineering in Generative AI-enabled networks. We demonstrate the effectiveness of using both DRL and IRL techniques and prove the superiority of IRL. © 2024, CC BY.
