Recently, applying data-independent random feature extraction methods has been promising for time-series classifications. However, a large portion of the features generated by these methods is redundant. To address this problem, we propose a robust feature selection method that applies a maximin optimization to a weight cost function that makes a trade-off between dimension reduction and preserving the classification accuracy. It can be shown that the weight cost is discrete midpoint convex with respect to the sparsity parameter, and at the same time is concave with respect to the regularization parameter. Based on these findings, we propose an efficient implementation for feature selection with maximin optimization. Our empirical results show that for large classification tasks with a small sample size per class, our feature selection method removes more redundancies than the state-of-the-art methods, while preserving the classification accuracy.

DC microgrids are becoming more and more popular, however there are still difficulties involving ongoing instability that are mostly caused by imbalances in energy supply and demand, particularly in situations with pulse load or variable pulse load patterns. Innovative solutions are required since these disruptive load dynamics significantly decrease the effectiveness of conventional PV-Battery control systems. conventional Proportional-Integral (PI) controllers, although widely employed, may encounter limitations when confronted with the unique challenges posed by specific load patterns, notably pulse load scenarios. These dynamic load profiles, characterized by rapid and unpredictable changes. The inherent non-linearity and variability in such load conditions can result in suboptimal control performance, potentially leading to voltage instability and transients within the microgrid. To overcome these issues and improve control performance, the introduction of Neural Network (NN) controllers promises to be a potential approach. NN controllers have a remarkable capacity to learn and adapt from data, making them particularly well-suited for situations characterized by non-linear and dynamic load behavior. In this study, a hybrid PI-NN (Proportional-Integral Neural Network) controller is introduced to reduce load effects, especially pulsed loads, in PV systems with batteries and supercapacitors. This method efficiently optimizes energy storage. For voltage control, it utilizes a PI system, which divides the reference current into low and high-frequency components for battery and supercapacitor control. For enhanced sensitivity and dynamic responsiveness, neural network control replaces conventional PIs. The performance of the hybrid PI-NN controller is evaluated in this work, with an emphasis on its potential to improve PV system efficiency in severe load circumstances.

We consider the problem of signal reconstruction for computed tomography (CT) under a nonlinear forward model that accounts for exponential signal attenuation, a polychromatic X-ray source, general measurement noise (e.g. Poisson shot noise), and observations acquired over multiple wavelength windows. We develop a simple iterative algorithm for single-material reconstruction, which we call EXACT (EXtragradient Algorithm for Computed Tomography), based on formulating our estimate as the fixed point of a monotone variational inequality. We prove guarantees on the statistical and computational performance of EXACT under practical assumptions on the measurement process. We also consider a recently introduced variant of this model with Gaussian measurements, and present sample and iteration complexity bounds for EXACT that improve upon those of existing algorithms. We apply our EXACT algorithm to a CT phantom image recovery task and show that it often requires fewer X-ray projection exposures, lower source intensity, and less computation time to achieve similar reconstruction quality to existing methods. © 2025, CC BY.

In transiting from one civilization to another, technology has played a vital and positive role. In the 21st century, one of the digital developments that is paving ways for human life improvement is machine-assisted technology using Artificial Intelligence (AI). Artificial Intelligence has successfully enhanced man's capacity in solving complex problems and processes. However, as developed nations continue to reap from the adoption of AI in various fields of human endeavors, the continent of Africa has remained behind, especially in AI-based skills and research. Various governments in developing nations have encouraged the adoption of AI, especially in institutions of learning. However, theoretical adoption without practical experience has remained an ineffective way of bridging the digital divide. In this paper we present the outcome of a practical approach to bridging the AI divide among students and researchers in Africa through funding support from the Google TensorFlow College Outreach Award. A 3-day hybrid bootcamp was organized (11th to 13th December, 2023) using the Google funding in order to equip postgraduate students and researchers with AI and collaborative research skills. A pre-survey method was employed to ascertain the knowledge level of the bootcamp participants. From the pre-surveyed feedback, training sessions on various AI domains were presented, and participant equipped with practical AI skills using a deployed AI-based cloud programming platform running on the private Federated Genomic Cloud (FEDGEN) infrastructure at Covenant University. A post-survey feedback was used to ascertain the effectiveness of this approach. A comparative analysis of the pre-survey and post-survey reveals a 70% improvement of AI skills among participants. This shows that having continuous training session for students and researchers is an effective method in closing the AI skills gap between developed and developing nations. © 2024 IEEE.

In the evolving landscape of cloud computing, federated cloud infrastructures present unique challenges and opportunities for resource and application monitoring. Monitoring the diverse array of cloud resources and applications within a federated cloud environment is crucial for delivering consistent Quality of Service (QoS) and continuous oversight across various cloud applications and infrastructure. Despite the various successes documented in the literature on multi-cloud monitoring, existing frameworks have not fully explored or provided enough insights into centralized monitoring of resources, applications, and network devices in a federated cloud environment. This paper introduces FedMonitor, an implementation architecture designed to enhance the monitoring and notification capabilities in federated cloud environments by building on the theoretical ideals in our earlier work (i.e. FEDARGOS-V1). FedMonitor leverages Prometheus and Grafana to crawl, manage and visualize metrics from diverse software services, hardware resources, and network devices within a federated cloud environment. The results demonstrate hat FedMonitor improves the effectiveness of resource and application monitoring in federated cloud environments. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper, we consider a blockchain-based energy trading (BBET) system with the proof-of-stake (PoS) protocol. The system designer aims to minimize system cost by considering the prosumers’ strategic token allocation between blockchain staking and energy purchase for their applications. This is challenging as the system designer does not know prosumers’ private information of impatience levels towards different applications. To this end, we propose an online learning mechanism (OLM), which includes incentive mechanisms to guide both prosumers’ private information reporting and staking decisions in two phases. In the exploration phase, we design a randomized staking reward to encourage prosumers’ truthful reporting of their private information for the learning of impatience level distributions. Based on the threshold structure of the prosumers’ equilibrium staking strategies, in the exploitation phase, we propose a learning-error-based reward to minimize the system cost considering the finite-sample bias. By characterizing the optimal exploration duration, we prove that OLM achieves an asymptotic zero-regret against the complete information benchmark, with the regret bounded by O(3√lnT/T) when operating for T time slots. We implement the corresponding smart contract in Ethereum to demonstrate the feasibility of our approach. Experiment results show that our mechanism reduces regret by an average of 74% compared to the state-of-art mechanism. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Recently, generative AI has attracted much attention from both academic and industrial fields, which has shown its potential, especially in the data generation and synthesis aspects. Simultaneously, secure and privacy-preserving mobile crowdsensing (SPPMCS) has been widely applied in data collection/ acquirement due to an advantage on low deployment cost, flexible implementation, and high adaptability. Since generative AI can generate new synthetic data to replace the original data to be analyzed and processed, it can lower data attacks and privacy leakage risks for the original data. Therefore, integrating generative AI into SPPMCS is feasible and significant. Moreover, this paper investigates an integration of generative AI in SPPMCS, where we present potential research focuses, solutions, and case studies. Specifically, we firstly review the preliminaries for generative AI and SPPMCS, where their integration potential is presented. Then, we discuss research issues and solutions for generative AI-enabled SPPMCS, including security defense of malicious data injection, illegal authorization, malicious spectrum manipulation at the physical layer, and privacy protection on sensing data content, sensing terminals' identification and location. Next, we propose a framework for sensing data content protection with generative AI, and simulations results have clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed framework. How people think, feel, and behave primarily is a representation of their personality characteristics. By being conscious of the personality characteristics of individuals whom we are dealing with or deciding to deal with, one can competently ameliorate the relationship, regardless of its type. With the rise of Internet-based communication infrastructures (social networks, forums, etc.), a considerable amount of human communications take place there. The most prominent tool in such communications is the language in written and spoken form that adroitly encodes all those essential personality characteristics of individuals. Text-based Automatic Personality Prediction (APP) is the automated forecasting of the personality of individuals based on the generated/exchanged text contents. This paper presents a novel knowledge graph-enabled approach to text-based APP that relies on the Big Five personality traits. To this end, given a text, a knowledge graph which is a set of interlinked descriptions of concepts was built by matching the input text's concepts with DBpedia knowledge base entries. Then, due to achieving a more powerful representation, the graph was enriched with the DBpedia ontology, NRC Emotion Intensity Lexicon, and MRC psycholinguistic database information. Afterwards, the knowledge graph which is now a knowledgeable alternative for the input text was embedded to yield an embedding matrix. Finally, to perform personality predictions the resulting embedding matrix was fed to four suggested deep learning models independently, which are based on convolutional neural network (CNN), simple recurrent neural network (RNN), long short term memory (LSTM), and bidirectional long short term memory (BiLSTM). The results indicated considerable improvements in prediction accuracies in all of the suggested classifiers. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Sensor network localization (SNL) is a challenging problem due to its inherent non-convexity and the effects of noise in inter-node ranging measurements and anchor node position. We formulate a non-convex SNL problem as a multiplayer non-convex potential game and investigate the existence and uniqueness of a Nash equilibrium (NE) in both the ideal setting without measurement noise and the practical setting with measurement noise. We first show that the NE exists and is unique in the noiseless case, and corresponds to the precise network localization. Then, we study the SNL for the case with errors affecting the anchor node position and the inter-node distance measurements. Specifically, we establish that in case these errors are sufficiently small, the NE exists and is unique. It is shown that the NE is an approximate solution to the SNL problem, and that the position errors can be quantified accordingly. Based on these findings, we apply the results to case studies involving only inter-node distance measurement errors and only anchor position information inaccuracies. © 2024 IEEE.
