The increasing effect of wind energy generation will influence the dynamic behavior of power systems by interacting with conventional generation and loads. Due to the inherent characteristics of wind turbines, non-uniform power production causes variations in system voltage and frequency. Therefore, a wind farm requires high reactive power compensation. Flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) devices such as SVCs inject reactive power into the system which helps in maintaining a better voltage profile. This paper presents the design of a linear and a nonlinear coordinating controller between a SVC and the wind farm inverter at the point of interconnection. The performances of the coordinating controllers are evaluated on the IEEE 12 bus FACTS benchmark power system where one of the generators is replaced by a wind farm supplying 300 MW. Results are presented to show that the voltage stability of the entire power system during small and large disturbances is improved

Enhancing /spl epsiv/-approximation algorithms with the optimal linear scaling factor

Finding a least-cost path subject to a delay constraint in a network is an NP-complete problem and has been extensively studied. Many works reported in the literature tackle this problem by using epsiv-approximation schemes and scaling techniques, i.e., by mapping link costs into integers or at least discrete numbers, a solution which satisfies the delay constraint and has a cost within a factor of the optimal one, that can be computed with pseudopolynomial computational complexity. In this paper, having observed that the computational complexities of the epsiv-approximation algorithms using the linear scaling technique are linearly proportional to the linear scaling factor, we investigate the issue of finding the optimal (the smallest) linear scaling factor to reduce the computational complexities, and propose two algorithms, the optimal linear scaling algorithm (OLSA) and the transformed OLSA. We analytically show that the computational complexities of our proposed algorithms are very low, as compared with those of epsiv-approximation algorithms. Therefore, incorporating the two algorithms can enhance the epsiv-approximation algorithms by granting them a practically important capability: self-adaptively picking the optimal linear scaling factors in different networks. As such, epsiv-approximation algorithms become more flexible and efficient

Power system stabilizers (PSSs) provide stabilizing control signals to excitation systems to damp out inter-area and intra-area oscillations. The PSS must be optimally tuned to accommodate the variations in the system dynamics. designing multiple optimal PSSs is a challenging task for researchers. This paper presents the comparison between two bio-inspired algorithms: a small population based particle swarm optimization (SPPSO) and the bacterial foraging algorithm (BFA) for the simultaneous tuning of a number of PSSs in a multi-machine power system. The cost function to be optimized by both algorithms takes into consideration the time domain transient responses. The effectiveness of the algorithms is evaluated and compared for damping the system oscillations during small and large disturbances. The robustness of the optimized PSSs in terms of damping is shown using the matrix pencil analysis

This paper presents two optimal control strategies for a grid independent photovoltaic system consisting of a PV collector array, a storage battery, and loads (critical and non-critical loads). The first strategy is based on action dependent heuristic dynamic programming (ADHDP), a model-free adaptive critic design (ACD) technique which optimizes the control performance based on a utility function. ADHDP critic network is used in a PV system simulation study to train an action neural network (optimal neurocontroller) to provide optimal control for varying PV system output energy and loadings. The second optimal control strategy is based on a fuzzy logic controller with its membership functions optimized using the particle swarm optimization. The emphasis of the optimal controllers is primarily to supply the critical base load at all times, thus requiring sufficient stored energy during times of less or no solar insulation. Simulation results are presented to compare the performance of the proposed optimal controllers with the conventional priority control scheme. Results show that the ADHDP based controller performs better than the optimized fuzzy controller, and the optimized fuzzy controller performs better than the standard PV-priority controller

Multi-FPGA systems (MFSs) are used as custom computing machines, logic emulators, and rapid prototyping vehicles. A key aspect of these systems is their programmable routing architecture which is the manner in which wires, FPGAs, and Field-Programmable Interconnect Devices (FPIDs) are connected. Several routing architectures for MFSs have been proposed and previous research has shown that the partial crossbar is one of the best existing architectures. A new routing architecture, called the Hybrid Complete-Graph and Partial- Crossbar (HCGP), was proposed by Khalid and was shown to provide superior speed and cost compared to partial crossbar. In this paper we address the issue of scalability of the HCGP routing architecture. The motivation for this work was to evaluate the suitability of the HCGP architecture for a future rapid prototyping system product that was being developed at Cadence. Experimental results show that the HCGP architecture is scalable and can be used with the state-of-the-art, high gate count FPGAs.

The use of wide area measurements for power system stabilization is recently given a lot of attention by researchers and the power industry to avoid cascading failures and blackouts such as the August 2003. This paper presents the design of a nonlinear external damping controller based on wide area measurements as inputs to a dual function neuron (DFN). This DFN controller is specifically designed to enhance the damping characteristics of a power system considering the nonlinearity in the system. The major advantage of the DFN controller is that it is simple in structure with less development time and hardware requirements for real-time implementation. The DFN controller is implemented on a digital signal processor and its performance is evaluated on the IEEE 12 bus FACTS benchmark power system implemented on a real time platform - real time digital simulator (RTDS). Experimental results show that the DFN controller provides better damping than a conventional linear controller

This paper describes the integration of wavelet analysis and time-domain beamforming of microphone array output signals for analyzing the acoustic emissions from airplane generated wake vortices. This integrated process provides visual and quantitative simultaneous information about the wake signal composition and array resolution for a particular wavelet subspace during a time interval, T. In the results section, an example is given on how image processing algorithms might be used to automate the extraction of this information and select the wavelet subspaces from which to perform image reconstruction. This process begins with the projection of all the microphone signals on wavelet multi-resolution subspaces. The projections of these signals on the same wavelet subspace or scale are then beamformed to produce an image of the wake corresponding to that particular scale. Therefore for each time interval T, the process produces a number of images equal to that of the wavelet scales. This is equivalent to a more conventional Fourier-based idea of filtering the microphone signals with band-pass liters having non-uniform bandwidths then beamform in different sub-bands, but offers greater flexibility and enhanced computational speed. Results from both approaches will be shown, which ultimately illustrate the advantages of wavelet analysis over that of the Fourier-based analysis. Amongst the advantages are the speed of the decomposition and ease of the image reconstruction from selected subspaces aided by the perfect reconstruction and orthogonality properties of wavelet analysis.

Neural networks have been shown to be useful tools for density estimation. However, the training of neural network structures is time consuming and requires fast processors for practical applications. A new method with a generalized neuron (GN) for density estimation is presented in this paper. The GN is trained with the particle swarm optimization algorithm which is known to have fast convergence than the standard backpropagation algorithm. Results are presented to show that the GN can estimate the density functions for distribution functions with different means and variances. This density estimation method can also be applied to the multi-sensor data fusion process

Much attention has been paid upon network data flow control in recent years. The main problem in this field is how to design good algorithm or control law for flow rate of network data flow sources and for updated price of communication links. Base on Lyapunov stability theory, this paper makes a deep analysis of stability of such network data flow control systems with the consideration of dynamic link capacity case. Simulations show that the stability analysis of dynamic link capacity of network data flow control system provided in the paper is enlightening and meaningful to further understand and design good control strategy of network data flow control problem. © Springer-Verlag Berlin/Heidelberg 2006.
