The MPI-IO standard creates a huge opportunity to break out of the traditional file system I/O methods. As a software layer between the user and the file system, an MPI-IO library can potentially optimize I/O on behalf of the user with little to no user intervention. This is all possible because of the rich data description and communication infrastructure MPI-2 offers. Powerful data descriptions and some of the other desirable features of MPI-2, however, make MPI-IO challenging to implement. By creating a new collective I/O implementation that allows developers to easily tinker and play with new optimizations or combinations of different techniques, research can proceed faster and be quickly and reliably deployed

Distributed computing systems are a viable and less expensive alternative to parallel computers. However, concurrent programming methods in distributed systems have not been studied as extensively as for parallel computers. Some of the main research issues are how to deal with scheduling and load balancing of such a system, which may consist of heterogeneous computers. In the past, a variety of dynamic scheduling schemes suitable for parallel loops (with independent iterations) on heterogeneous computer clusters have been obtained and studied. However, no study of dynamic schemes for loops with iteration dependencies has been reported so far. In this work we study the problem of scheduling loops with iteration dependencies for heterogeneous (dedicated and non-dedicated) clusters. The presence of iteration dependencies incurs an extra degree of difficulty and makes the development of such schemes quite a challenge. We extend three well known dynamic schemes (CSS, TSS and DTSS) by introducing synchronization points at certain intervals so that processors compute in pipelined fashion. Our scheme is called dynamic multi-phase scheduling (DMPS) and we apply it to loops with iteration dependencies. We implemented our new scheme on a network of heterogeneous computers and studied its performance. Through extensive testing on two real-life applications (the heat equation and the Floyd-Steinberg algorithm), we show that the proposed method is efficient for parallelizing nested loops with dependencies on heterogeneous systems.

Accurate forecasts of tourism demand are prerequisites in the decision making process in many organizations in the private and public sectors. Any information concerning the future evolution of tourism flows is of great importance to hoteliers, tour operators and other industries concerned with tourism, services or transportation. In the last few decades international tourism demand has attracted substantial academic interest, resulting in a wide range of successful forecasting approaches. Much attention has been paid to econometric models that use regression techniques to estimate the underlying relationship between tourism demand and its determinants;unfortunately, empirical studies suggest that these models usually fail to outperform simple time series models. The current study focuses on an alternative approach, the Tourism Technical Analysis System (TTAS), incorporating the use of technical analysis techniques and building on the similarities between stock and tourism markets. The absolute and directional accuracy of TTAS is evaluated in relation to a range of time series and econometric methods for forecasting international tourism demand, using as a benchmark well-known published research.

In this paper, an unconstrained modified particle swarm optimization (UMPSO) algorithm is introduced and studied empirically. Four well known benchmark functions, with asymmetric initial position values, are used as testing functions for the UMPSO algorithm. The UMPSO is a variation of the canonical PSO in which the velocity and position is unconstrained, an additional strategic component is added, and the social component term has been modified. The strategy component is used instead of varying parameters or mutation to enhance diversity in the swarm during the search. The UMPSO algorithm is then compared to results obtained from the constrained canonical PSO (CPSO) and the unconstrained canonical PSO (UPSO). The results show that UMPSO algorithm with no maximum velocity and position, and no minimum velocity and position value that performs better than the CPSO and the UPSO for the Sphere, Rosenbrock, Rastrigrin, and Griewank benchmark functions.

Including load shedding in the system control strategy for a small standalone hybrid power system such as a nanogrid is beneficial since the peak generation requirement is reduced and the system is protected from a complete collapse under overload conditions. Autonomous load shedding can be implemented in a nanogrid that uses DC bus signalling for source scheduling by shedding loads when the DC bus voltage decreases to a level that signals an overload condition. This paper explains the control requirements for the system interface converters that is required to permit load shedding and explains a procedure for implementing a prioritized load shedding scheme in a practical system. Experimental results are included to illustrate the operation of this control strategy

In this paper, we present a communication protocol for network on chip architectures which have complex packet switched communication protocols. In order to manage this complexity and advance reusability, a layered approach is taken. It is a 4-layered protocol stack including application, transaction, data-link and physical layers. Our protocol stack supports the best effort traffic as well as guaranteed bandwidth using the virtual channels which logically share the physical links. In order to evaluate the design, an HDL implementation of this protocol stack is implemented and synthesized. The results show 0.5% of a Virtex II 2VP30 FPGA is employed by our proposed protocol stack for each resource network interface

This paper presents spectral characterization for efficient image detection using hyperspectral processing technique. We investigate relationship between the number of bands used in the detection so that the minimum number of bands are used in the processing. This approach reduces computation and implementation complexity of the algorithms. Specifically, we considered contribution coefficient by each band and based on this coefficient, we heuristically select the bands for processing. We have shown that for effective detection, only small number of bands are needed.

The needs of vision impaired students are quite different to sighted students. The increasing use of e-learning means higher education must move to multi-modal user interfaces in order to make e-learning materials accessible to all students. E-Learning materials (particularly in the sciences and technology) are predominantly visual, presented via computer keyboard and screen. Software and devices designed to aid the vision impaired are unable to decipher most images and visual- centric objects contained in e-learning materials. This paper discusses a project undertaken over the past two years to modify the content and presentation of Cisco certification e-learning courses to enable accessibility by vision impaired and blind students. These modifications necessitated rewriting the learning materials so they could be effectively presented via multi-modal user interfaces to vision impaired students, involving speech, audio, haptics and force-feed devices and methods. Evaluation of sections of the project by the vision impaired students using a model based upon Stufflebeam's CIPP model and Kirkpatrick's Four-Level training program evaluation model has been carried out and the results are presented.

This paper presents a formulation of particle filter for tracking an object in 3-D space. The 3-D tracking algorithm is derived based on bearings only tracking algorithm that is applied in tracking of an object in 2-D space with one angle measurement. We investigate and present the fusion process of the algorithms. The performance of the proposed algorithms are evaluated in detail.
