High power, high reliability electric motor drives in such applications as electric ship propulsions, electric locomotives and hybrid electric vehicles require the use of high order phase electric machines run with multi-phase converters. Presently, five and asymmetrical six-phase machines with their associated converters are emerging industry standards. This paper presents a novel carrier-based pulse-width modulation technique for the five phase converters, which in applications is required to generate five phase fundamental frequency voltages with or without a third harmonic (of the fundamental frequency) component voltages. The modulation waveforms required to switch the devices in the converter legs are obtained by summing the turn-on times of the switching devices, which are calculated using the space vector representations of the converter switching states. The determination of the carrier-based modulation waveforms which with a high frequency sine-triangle generate the switching functions for the converter is set forth explicitly. The resulting carrier-based PWM modulation scheme is experimentally implemented with a TMS DSP for converter operation in the linear and over-modulation regions. In determining the correct operation of relays of a protection scheme, proper representation of instrument transformers and their behavior in conditions where there can be transient is very critical. This paper presents a simulation model for assessing the transient performance of capacitive voltage transformers (CVTs). In order to test the validity of the developed model, four CVT operational conditions are considered using field data collected from one of the Nigerian electric utility 330/132/33 kV substations. The model simulation results revealed various configuration performance responses that could affect relay protection schemes to different degrees. As expected, the CVT responses showed that faults initiated at zero voltage crossing, which is the worst transient condition, produced transient voltage magnitude up to 40% of the nominal voltage while faults initiated at the crest produced minimum transient voltage magnitude. It is shown that the model developed for the selected instrument transformer yielded satisfactory results

Robust tuning of lead-lag type controller used for regulating FACTS control signal to improve dynamic stability has been an area of interest in research. This paper presents a new approach based on the foraging behavior of *** Bacteria in the human intestine, to optimize simultaneously three constants each of four lead-lag type UPFC controller present in a single machine infinite bus (SMIB) power system. For the tuning purpose, a multi-objective cost function is formulated that accounts for damping factors and ratios of various system modes for a wide range of operating conditions. Robustness of the proposed tuning method is shown by transient stability analysis of the system time domain simulations when subjected to disturbances at different operating conditions.

In recent years, many quantum cryptographic schemes have been proposed. However, it seems that there are many technical difficulties to realize them (except Quantum Key Distributions) as practical applications. In this paper, we propose a bank transfer (i.e., funds or Electronic Funds Transfer) system utilizing both classical and quantum cryptography to provide theoretically unbreakable security. This system can be realized using current technologies (e.g., linear polarizers and Faraday rotators) and requires no additional authentication and no key distribution scheme. However, a trusted third party must keep all member banks' private keys for encryption, authentication and also for functions to generate classical digital signatures.

In this paper, the vision-based navigation problem for mobile robots in indoor environments is discussed. Corridor guidelines between the walls and the floor are used to guide the robot to move in the middle of the hallway. A neural network method is proposed to calibrate the camera, and then the corridor guidelines are transformed from image coordinates to robot coordinates. The corridor guidelines are extracted using the least square estimator. The backstepping method is employed to design the controller that guarantees the robot to move in the desired path. Experimental and simulation results show the efficiency of the proposed method

Path Planning for Mobile Robots Using Straight Lines

The problem of path planning of mobile robots typically consists of two subproblems: path generation and path tracking. In this paper, the path of a mobile robot is generated by a sequence of straight lines, and then the kinematic controller is designed by using coordinate transformation in order to drive the robot to move in the desired path. Stability of the proposed controller is guaranteed by the Lyapunov theory. Simulation results show the efficiency of the proposed method

This paper presents a novel fuzzy logic based controller for a Static Compensator (STATCOM) connected to a power system. Type-II fuzzy systems are selected that enable the controller to deal with design uncertainties and the noise associated with the measurements in the power system. Interval type-II fuzzy is computationally more effective than the ordinary type-II fuzzy systems and is more suitable for the power network with fast changing dynamics. Using a proportional-integrator approach the proposed controller is capable of dealing with actual rather than deviation signals. The STATCOM is connected to a multimachine power system in order to provide extra voltage support and improve the system dynamic performance. Simulation results are provided to show that the proposed controller outperforms a conventional PI controller during large scale faults as well as small disturbances. The type-II fuzzy membership functions provide a robust performance for the controller and eliminate the need for a model based adaptive control scheme.

We consider improving the performance of communications over unknown channels with unknown frequency offsets. In lieu of the commonly suggested double differential (DD) modulation/detection, we consider single differential (SD) modulation/detection. We propose an approach that first estimates and compensates for the frequency offset and then detects using an existing multiple symbol detector for SD modulation. We introduce a simple data-symbol-independent frequency offset estimation method, which is reasonably accurate when using a data block larger than the one used for detection. Simulation results show that the SD modulation/detection approach proposed herein can significantly outperform the DD modulation/detection schemes.

For a redundantly-actuated wheeled mobile robot, the squeeze force between the robot body and its wheels does not contribute to the motion of the robot, but to squeeze the related rigid bodies each other. It is good to control the squeeze force, regulate it to zero if possible, from the view of energy efficiency or life span of joint components. Thus a scheme controlling robot motion while controlling squeeze force is proposed as the following procedure: After a stable controller is presented for robot motion control, a squeeze force controller is designed to regulate the squeeze force to zero. The proposed scheme is demonstrated in robot regulation and tracking control problem. A "PD+" controller is adopted for robot regulation, a modified inverse dynamics control is applied for robot tracking control. In both robot control problems, an integral feedback squeeze force controller is used to minimize the squeeze force. The presented simulation results verify the effect of the proposed scheme
