Recently, many new flow control mechanisms derived from the classic Kelly model are proposed to solve network congestion problems. They perform well in stability, fairness or robustness. However, most of them have convergence rates that are linear since in classic Kelly model, the link price is only positive. In addition, some needs to introduce extra packet headers to get the price information. In this paper, we present a novel flow control model based on Kelly model in which link price can be negative to improve the convergence rate. Further, the proposed model uses two bits of ECN field in IP header to feedback price instead of introducing new packet header data. By this approach, we can implement flow control schemes achieving exponential convergence in traditional TCP/IP datagram format. NS2 simulation results show that our model can keep the advantages of other flow mechanisms, such as fairness and asymptotic stability with more rapid convergence rate

In wireless network, TCP Reno and TCP Vegas do not work well as they do in wired network, because they take packet losses or timeout as the signal of congestion. However, in wireless network, temporary link outages or fading-induced bit errors result in packet losses, so the TCP decreases the cwnd improperly. Some variations of TCP have been developed to improve the transport protocol performance for wireless network. These approaches progress along two directions. One direction is to hide any losses not related to congestion from the sender, so that the sender can only detect the packet losses due to congestion, such as I-TCP or snoopy protocol. However these protocols are not fit for ad hoc network in which there are no middle base stations between the wire link and the wireless link. Thus, the other direction, explicit congestion notification (ECN), is a promising direction in the wireless network. In the paper, we propose a new protocol based on expanded ECN mechanism to respond to packet losses in the wireless environment more properly. The paper gives the idea to construct the new mechanism, called TCP 3-states/ECN2, and analyses the stability of the new mechanism. By using the NS-2 simulator, the paper compares the new mechanism on throughput, drop ratio and delay time with TCP Reno and TCP Vegas. The simulation result indicates TCP 3-states/ECN2 mechanism can get better tradeoff of throughput and delay time, so it can work well in wireless environment

Delay-constrained streaming of fully-scalable video over IEEE 802.11a/e wireless (WLANs) is of great interest for many emerging multimedia applications. In this paper, we consider the problem of video transmission over HCF controlled channel access (HCCA), which is part of the new medium access control (MAC) protocol of IEEE 802.11e. A cross-layer optimization across the MAC and application layers is used in order to exploit the features provided by the new HCCA standard, as well as by the versatility of new state-of-the-art scalable video coding algorithms. Under pre-determined delay constraints for streaming, the proposed cross-layer strategy leads to a larger number of stations being simultaneously admitted (without any loss in the video quality) than in systems that utilize application-layer only optimizations. At the same time, the fine-grain layering provided by the scalable bitstream facilitates prioritization and unequal retransmissions of packets at the MAC layer thereby enabling graceful quality degradation under channel-capacity limitations and delay constraints. The expected gains offered by the optimized solutions proposed in this paper are established through simulations

This paper is concerned with reduced-order H 2 and H infin multirate filter bank design. Parameter-dependent Lyapunov function (PDLF) based linear matrix inequality (LMI) conditions are presented for the design of reduced-order synthesis filters. By the introduction of two new slack variables in PDLF, the constraint on the Lyapunov matrix is converted to the constraint on the new slack variables. This renders a less conservative design method for reduced-order multirate filter bank. The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated by an example

This paper is concerned with reduced-order infin filtering of stochastic systems. Based on linear matrix inequality (LMI) technique, a new design method is proposed for the reduced-order filtering of stochastic linear systems. The method is derived from decomposing the key matrix in LMIs which determines the order of designed filters. Different from the existing methods, the proposed method first minimizes the upper bound of the key matrix and then eliminates its near-zero eigenvalues, which results in a simpler, more direct and reliable design procedure. The method is applicable to both continuous and discrete time stochastic systems. Its effectiveness is illustrated by an example

An adaptive approach is proposed for the problem of left ventricular ejection time (LVET) estimation using peripheral pressure waveform signals. The proposed algorithm, which makes use of 2 peripheral pressure measurements, makes it possible to adaptively estimate the LVET in response to different cardiovascular physiologic states. The algorithm builds on features obtained from global and branch-specific characterization of the cardiovascular circulation as well as waveform features to dramatically improve the accuracy of LVET estimation. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated with respect to its heart-rate-based conventional counterpart, which shows approximately 40% improvement of estimation accuracy in terms of R 2 values from 0.6655 for the conventional waveform-based approach to 0.9222 for the proposed approach

We formulate and analyze a three-dimensional model of motion camouflage, a stealth strategy observed in nature. The pursuer and evader trajectories are described using natural Frenet frames (or relatively parallel adapted frames), and the corresponding natural curvatures serve as controls. A high-gain feedback control law is derived. The biological plausibility of the feedback law is discussed, as is its connection to missile guidance. Simulations illustrating motion camouflage are also presented. This paper builds on recent work on motion camouflage in the planar setting

A smart power ASIC (SPIC) for a distributed power system

We describe the design and implementation and discrete validation of a high-voltage BCD-technology-based smart power integrated circuit (SPIC) design, which is an 'one-chip solution' to control, drive, and protect a two-stage distributed power system (DPS). As such, the proposed SPIC achieves higher power density, reduced design-cycle time, and enhanced system reliability. DPS comprises a front-end ac/dc single-switch power factorcorrection (PFC) converter, which is cascaded with a back-end dc/dc four-switch full-bridge zero-voltage switching (FBZVS) converter. The current- and the voltage-mode controllers for the PFC and the FBZVS converters, respectively, are integrated into the SPIC. The SPIC can 'directly' fire the two high-side and three low-side devices in the power system. A combination of bootstrap and charge-pump techniques is used to power the gate drive circuits for the high-side power devices;hence, the duty cycle for a high-side power device is 100% and independent of the turn-on time of the low-side power device in the same leg of the FBZVS converter. Additionally, a more reliable two-stage fault protection scheme is implemented in the SPIC including protection features such as under-voltage lockout, over-current protection, adaptive shoot-through protection, and soft-start capability. This paper illustrates several key experimental results obtained by controlling DPS using the discrete SPIC to validate the functionalities of the latter and the satisfactory performance of the overall system. © Indian Institute of Science.

In this note, we present a connection between designing low correlation zone (LCZ) sequences and the results of correlation of sequences with subfield decompositions presented in a recent book by the first two authors. This results in low correlation zone signal sets with huge sizes over three different alphabetic sets: finite field of size q, integer residue ring modulo q, and the subset in the complex field which consists of powers of a primitive q-th root of unity. We also provide two open problems along this direction.
