The importance of short-term solar radiation forecasting for power system use and management cannot be overstated. However, Non-stationarity and unpredictability make accurate forecasting difficult. Time series approaches are suitable for forecasting stationary time series derived from a non-stationary sequence. Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) are time-domain decomposition methods used to separate the components of the original solar radiation time series that have distinct time1-scale characteristics. As a result, the components are forecasted using the Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) model, which is a simple and effective machine learning method. This paper presents a hybrid EMD/EEMD-BPNN model for predicting short-term solar irradiance. To identify unique data information at different time scales, EMD/EEMD first breaks up the solar radiation time series into several stationary or fundamental sub-series. The next step is to create BPNN models with specified parameters for each subsequence to forecast new ones. Finally, each subsequence's projected value is combined to generate the final forecast result. The accuracy of solar forecasts has greatly increased, especially when utilizing hybrid methods. Furthermore, using the proposed hybrid technique for multistep forecasting resulted in even more improvement. The basic BPNN model for 15 min time step achieves predicting with a root mean square error (RMSE) of roughly 416.04 W/m2 for 15min;however, this error decreases to 65.25 W/m2 with the EMD-Hybrid Model, and 32.86 W/m2 with the EEMD-Hybrid Model. In addition, the results of the skill score have proven clearly that EMD/EEMD-BPNN Model performs better compared to typical BPNN using several meteorological inputs © 2023 IEEE.

Emerging advanced and innovative Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), automation strategies, and associated algorithms in the traditional power system have transformed it into a Cyber-Physical Power System (CPPS). Energy management and control are crucial in the Shipboard Power System operation. For instance, to meet the ship's energy and other ancillary demands, especially the mission-critical loads that require practical and secure network communication. Therefore, a comprehensive modeling and testing and validation approach was developed in this paper. This enables flexible system-level aspect evaluation through numerous experiments, including virtual, real, and mixed lab settings. This paper presents a scalable and flexible three-layer cyber-physical co-simulation platform implemented in the FIU smart grid testbed. This includes real-time power system simulation using OPAL-RT, ns3 for communication network emulation, and MATLAB/SIMULINK for implementing various applications. To demonstrate the platform's effective operation, energy management with a central controller for SPS was configured and implemented to test the communication network performance by creating tools to characterize the network latency for this application. © 2023 IEEE.

Continuous-time (CT) modeling has proven to provide improved sample efficiency and interpretability in learning the dynamical behavior of physical systems compared to discrete-time (DT) models. However, even with numerous recent developments, the CT nonlinear state-space (NL-SS) model identification problem remains to be solved in full, considering common experimental aspects such as the presence of external inputs, measurement noise, latent states, and general robustness. This paper presents a novel estimation method that addresses all these aspects and that can obtain state-of-the-art results on multiple benchmarks with compact fully connected neural networks capturing the CT dynamics. The proposed estimation method called the subspace encoder approach (SUBNET) ascertains these results by efficiently approximating the complete simulation loss by evaluating short simulations on subsections of the data, by using an encoder function to estimate the initial state for each subsection and a novel state-derivative normalization to ensure stability and good numerical conditioning of the training process. We prove that the use of subsections increases cost function smoothness together with the necessary requirements for the existence of the encoder function and we show that the proposed state-derivative normalization is essential for reliable estimation of CT NL-SS models. © 2023 11th International Conference on Learning Representations, ICLR 2023. Lithium-ion batteries are playing a critical role in many applications nowadays, from small-scale electronic devices to grid-scale storage systems. To maintain its continuous operation and increase its life span, the state of charge of the battery should be determined to ensure safe operating conditions. Among the existing charge estimation methods, data-driven models are flourishing these days. This work presents a state of charge estimation for the eFlex 52.8V/5.4 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack at the Energy systems Research laboratory (ESRL) at FIU. Three different machine learning models were implemented and trained through Python code to achieve the most accurate SoC estimation. Although the three proposed models can efficiently estimate the battery's SoC with an acceptable error percentage, the random forest regression model has proven its outperformance among the selected models with a percentage mean square error less than 0.01. © 2023 IEEE.

AC microgrids may be a target of cyber-attacks such as False Data Injection attack (FDIA) or Denial of Service attacks due to the use of communication technologies. These types of attacks target the communication infrastructure or the control system itself. For instance, FDIAs aim to inject false data into AC microgrids to disrupt the control system. Techniques that detect and mitigate the effect of such attacks are needed. This paper presents an AC microgrid that is structured by parallel inverters and controlled by distributed consensus control strategies to control the frequency and voltage magnitude through active and reactive power. We will investigate the FDIAs effect on the AC microgrid operation. A viable solution to address the FDIA attacks in AC microgrids is developed using an ANN-based reference tracking application to detect and mitigate the attack. The simulation results proved that the proposed strategy could detect and mitigate FDIA attacks especially if the ANN is well trained. © 2023 IEEE.

Power system dynamics have significantly changed with the global integration of renewable energy sources (RESs). Traditionally, the stored kinetic energy is used for compensating the generation mismatch using the rotating mass of the Synchronous Generators (SGs). With the increase in RESs penetration, SGs are being replaced by inverter-based RESs generation systems which are decoupled from the power systems through power converters. Therefore, the total inertia of the system has decreased, and the system's stability is significantly impacted as the value of the rate of change of frequency (ROCOF) and frequency deviations will be increased. To overcome these challenges, inertia emulation from various energy storage systems (ESS) is used to act as a virtual source of inertia power. This work presents an isolated microgrid (MG) that includes conventional power generation sources and RESs, and an optimal virtual inertia (VI) control loop is proposed for frequency stability enhancement. Supercapacitors (SC) bank with a PID controller presents the VI control loop and acts as a supplementary source for inertia power to support the frequency stability of the system. A genetic algorithm (GA) is used as an optimization technique to get the optimal values of the PID controller gains. The performance of the islanded MG with the proposed optimal control scheme is examined under different operating conditions with varying levels of RESs penetration and system parameters uncertainties. The proposed technique showed its effectiveness and robustness over the system's operation without VI control for keeping the system stable under different operating conditions. © 2023 IEEE.

Despite the increasing prevalence of DC microgrids, they encounter instability issues due to imbalances in supply and demand, especially when dealing with specific loads such as pulse load or variable pulse load. The system faces severe changes which reduce the effectiveness of typical PV-Battery control systems. The solution to this problem frequently involves the use of energy storage devices such as supercapacitors SCs. When exposed to transients, batteries risk having their lifespans shortened and are challenged in keeping the stability of DC bus voltage and reducing overall transients. In order to increase the stability of DC microgrids and thereby increase their reliability and resilience, it is possible to combine the advantages of batteries and supercapacitors. Integrating both batteries and supercapacitors effectively enables DC microgrids to manage both steady-state and transient conditions. The main goal of this research paper is to investigate how the hybrid energy storage system (HESS) improves the stability of DC microgrids. According to sets of results, the proposed scheme has successfully reduced DC bus voltage variations regardless of variations in solar irradiance and the different pulsed load profiles. © 2023 IEEE.

To support increasing demands for real-time multimedia wireless data traffic, there have been considerable efforts toward guaranteeing stringent quality-of-service (QoS) when designing massive multiple-input and multiple-output (m-MIMO) mobile wireless network architectures for massive ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (mURLLC). One of the major design issues raised by mURLLC is how to characterize QoS metrics for upper-bounding both delay and error-rate when implementing short-packet data communications, such as finite blocklength coding (FBC), over highly time-varying m-MIMO based wireless fading channels. To efficiently accommodate statistical QoS for mURLLC traffic, it is crucial to model and investigate m-MIMO based wireless fading channels' stochastic-characteristics by defining and identifying new statistical QoS metrics and their analytical relationships, such as delay-bound-violating probability, effective capacity, decoding error probability, etc., in the finite blocklength regime. However, how to rigorously and efficiently characterize the stochastic dynamics of m-MIMO mobile wireless networks in terms of statistically upper-bounding FBC-based both delay and error-rate QoS metrics has been neither fundamentally understood nor thoroughly studied before. To overcome these challenges, in this paper we develop analytical modeling techniques and frameworks for statistical delay and error-rate bounded QoS in the finite blocklength regime. First, we establish system models using FBC. Second, we develop a set of new statistical delay and error-rate bounded QoS metrics including delay, error-rate, and joint-delay/error-rate QoS-exponents, and the corresponding ?-effective capacities. Finally, our simulations validate and evaluate our developed modeling schemes for statistical QoS to support 6G mURLLC. © 2023 IEEE.

Reducing geometrical complexity while preserving desired wave properties is critical for proof-of-concept studies in wave physics, as evidenced by recent efforts to realize photonic synthetic dimensions, isospectrality, and hyperbolic lattices. Laughlin’s topological pump, which elucidates quantum Hall states in cylindrical geometry with a radial magnetic field and a time-varying axial magnetic flux, is a prime example of these efforts. Here we propose a two-dimensional dynamical photonic system for the topological pumping of pseudospin modes by exploiting synthetic frequency dimensions. The system provides the independent control of pseudomagnetic fields and electromotive forces achieved by the interplay between mode-dependent and mode-independent gauge fields. To address the axial open boundaries and azimuthal periodicity of the system, we define the adjusted local Chern marker with rotating azimuthal coordinates, proving the nontrivial topology of the system. We demonstrate the adiabatic pumping for crosstalk-free frequency conversion with wave front molding. Our approach allows for reproducing Laughlin’s thought experiment at room temperature with a scalable setup.

Uncertainty-Aware DRL for Autonomous Vehicle Crowd Navigation in Shared Space

Safe, socially compliant, and efficient navigation of low-speed autonomous vehicles (AVs) in pedestrian-rich environments necessitates considering pedestrians' future positions and interactions with the vehicle and others. Despite the inevitable uncertainties associated with pedestrians' predicted trajectories due to their unobserved states (e.g., intent), existing deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithms for crowd navigation often neglect these uncertainties when using predicted trajectories to guide policy learning. This omission limits the usability of predictions when diverging from ground truth. This work introduces an integrated prediction and planning approach that incorporates the uncertainties of predicted pedestrian states in the training of a model-free DRL algorithm. A novel reward function encourages the AV to respect pedestrians' personal space, decrease speed during close approaches, and minimize the collision probability with their predicted paths. Unlike previous DRL methods, our model, designed for AV operation in crowded spaces, is trained in a novel simulation environment that reflects realistic pedestrian behaviour in a shared space with vehicles. Results show a 40% decrease in collision rate and a 15% increase in minimum distance to pedestrians compared to the state of the art model that does not account for prediction uncertainty. Additionally, the approach outperforms model predictive control methods that incorporate the same prediction uncertainties in terms of both performance and computational time, while producing trajectories closer to human drivers in similar scenarios.
