With more inverter-based resources (IBRs), our power systems have lower frequency nadirs following N-1 contingencies, and undesired under-frequency load shedding (UFLS) can occur. To address this challenge, IBRs can be programmed to provide at least three types of fast frequency response (FFR), e.g., step response, proportional response (P/f droop response), and derivative response (synthetic inertia). However, these heterogeneous FFR challenge the study of power system frequency dynamics. Thus, this paper develops an analytical frequency nadir prediction method that allows for the consideration of all three potential forms of FFR provided by IBRs. The proposed method provides fast and accurate frequency nadir estimation after N-1 generation tripping contingencies. Our method is grounded on the closed-form solution for the frequency nadir, which is solved from the second-order system frequency response model considering the governor dynamics and three types of FFR. The simulation results in the IEEE 39-bus system with different types of FFR demonstrate that the proposed method provides an accurate and fast prediction of the frequency nadir under various disturbances.

The flexibility and complexity of IPv6 extension headers allow attackers to create covert channels or bypass security mechanisms, leading to potential data breaches or system compromises. The mature development of machine learning has become the primary detection technology option used to mitigate covert communication threats. However, the complexity of detecting covert communication, evolving injection techniques, and scarcity of data make building machine-learning models challenging. In previous related research, machine learning has shown good performance in detecting covert communications, but oversimplified attack scenario assumptions cannot represent the complexity of modern covert technologies and make it easier for machine learning models to detect covert communications. To bridge this gap, in this study, we analyzed the packet structure and network traffic behavior of IPv6, used encryption algorithms, and performed covert communication injection without changing network packet behavior to get closer to real attack scenarios. In addition to analyzing and injecting methods for covert communications, this study also uses comprehensive machine learning techniques to train the model proposed in this study to detect threats, including traditional decision trees such as random forests and gradient boosting, as well as complex neural network architectures such as CNNs and LSTMs, to achieve detection accuracy of over 90%. This study details the methods used for dataset augmentation and the comparative performance of the applied models, reinforcing insights into the adaptability and resilience of the machine learning application in IPv6 covert communication. In addition, we also proposed a Generative AI-assisted interpretation concept based on prompt engineering as a preliminary study of the role of Generative AI agents in covert communication. © 2025, CC BY-NC-ND.

Automating smart Internet of Things devices in modern homes using context-based fuzzy logic

Internet of Things (IoT) is mainly used to connect different embedded objects over the internet to make communication between them possible. With the help of IoT, devices find a way to interact, work together, and study from each other's experiences just like humans do. IoT finds its way in applications such as smart home, smart city, healthcare, agriculture, and so on. The name smart home arises due to the automation of the normal home appliances to make it smart. When the devices of the normal smart home are connected via the internet, they become a part of the IoT. The smart home should ensure the following characteristics such as security, comfort, convenience, and energy saving. The article presents a technique for IoT controlled devices in a smart home using context-based fuzzy logic. Fuzzy logic is mainly used to monitor and analyze the real-time data collected from the sensors in the smart homes from various environments. Context-based fuzzy logic uses a multivalued logic principle which differs from the normal Boolean logic, where the truth value lies between only zero and one (ie, true or false). The proposed smart home is implemented in a real case scenario where it yields an accuracy of 90.5%, response time of 6.41 milliseconds, and an F-measure of 97%. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

We introduce a novel framework for analyzing reinforcement learning (RL) in continuous state-action spaces, and use it to prove fast rates of convergence in both off-line and on-line settings. Our analysis highlights two key stability properties, relating to how changes in value functions and/or policies affect the Bellman operator and occupation measures. We argue that these properties are satisfied in many continuous state-action Markov decision processes. Our analysis also offers fresh perspectives on the roles of pessimism and optimism in off-line and on-line RL.

The rapid growth of AI-enabled Internet of Vehicles (IoV) calls for efficient machine learning (ML) solutions that can handle high vehicular mobility and decentralized data. This has motivated the emergence of Hierarchical Federated Learning over vehicle-edge-cloud architectures (VEC-HFL). Nevertheless, one aspect which is underexplored in the literature on VEC-HFL is that vehicles often need to execute multiple ML tasks simultaneously, where this multi-model training environment introduces crucial challenges. First, improper aggregation rules can lead to model obsolescence and prolonged training times. Second, vehicular mobility may result in inefficient data utilization by preventing the vehicles from returning their models to the network edge. Third, achieving a balanced resource allocation across diverse tasks becomes of paramount importance as it majorly affects the effectiveness of collaborative training. We take one of the first steps towards addressing these challenges via proposing a framework for multi-model training in dynamic VEC-HFL with the goal of minimizing global training latency while ensuring balanced training across various tasks—a problem that turns out to be NP-hard. To facilitate timely model training, we introduce a hybrid synchronous-asynchronous aggregation rule. Building on this, we present a novel method called Hybrid Evolutionary And gReedy allocaTion (HEART). The framework operates in two stages: first, it achieves balanced task scheduling through a hybrid heuristic approach that combines improved Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Genetic Algorithms (GA);second, it employs a low-complexity greedy algorithm to determine the training priority of assigned tasks on vehicles. Inductive wireless power transfer (WPT) faces significant challenges in achieving high efficiency and stable output power for charging mobile devices like EVs. Using circular pads (CP) as the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) and a self-oscillating controlled inverter, this paper demonstrates a robust WPT system that maintains high constant transfer efficiency and output power in a defined region regardless of coupling coefficient variations without communication between Tx and Rx or control circuits for the receiver side. In contrast to couplers with non-identical Tx and Rx pads and multiple decoupled coils in the Rx pad, the compact CP-CP magnetic coupler with a single identical coil on the Tx and Rx is more robust at a wider transfer distance (air gap) and lateral and rotational misalignment between the Tx and Rx. The proposed 1-kW robust WPT system with up to a 20 cm air gap between the Tx and Rx and up to 12 cm lateral misalignment in all directions at a 15 cm air gap and all degrees of rotational misalignment can tolerate coupling variations and achieve constant output power with 93% constant transfer efficiency.

The least squares estimator is the most popular identification method. In the absence of prior knowledge on the unknown noise, uniform weights on all samples are often as-sumed. In reality, potentially unknown contamination is always present and the uniform weights are not necessarily the best. Further, explicit information about the nature of contamination is usually absent. To this end, a relaxed-tilted least squares method is proposed here to assign unequal weights so that the effect of undesired noise contamination can be mitigated. The relaxed-tilted least squares method tilts the uniform prior on the samples so as to move the uniform distribution in a direction that enjoys the smallest estimation error in the neighborhood of the uniform distribution. Theoretical results are established including the ability of outlier removal and the guaranteed parameter convergence in the presence of outliers. Numerical algorithms are proposed and simulated, which support the theoretical derivations.

Much of human knowledge in cybersecurity is encapsulated within the ever-growing volume of scientific papers. As this textual data continues to expand, the importance of document organization methods becomes increasingly crucial for extracting actionable insights hidden within large text datasets. Knowledge Graphs (KGs) serve as a means to store factual information in a structured manner, providing explicit, interpretable knowledge that includes domain-specific information from the cybersecurity scientific literature. One of the challenges in constructing a KG from scientific literature is the extraction of ontology from unstructured text. In this paper, we address this topic and introduce a method for building a multi-modal KG by extracting structured ontology from scientific papers. We demonstrate this concept in the cybersecurity domain. One modality of the KG represents observable information from the papers, such as the categories in which they were published or the authors. The second modality uncovers latent (hidden) patterns of text extracted through hierarchical and semantic non-negative matrix factorization (NMF), such as named entities, topics or clusters, and keywords. We illustrate this concept by consolidating more than two million scientific papers uploaded to arXiv into the cyber-domain, using hierarchical and semantic NMF, and by building a cyber-domain-specific KG.

As China's steel production accounts for an increasing share of the world's output, the intelligent transformation of the steel industry is becoming increasingly urgent. To address issues such as low levels of mobile informationization in steel enterprises and the lack of an industry-specific mobile application platform, it is of great significance to establish a shared mobile application platform for the steel industry. In this paper, the requirements of the platform were analyzed, and the platform's functions were designed. The software design of the platform was then carried out, and the entire mobile application sharing platform was developed, effectively improving the production management efficiency of steel enterprises. The results indicate that the platform can effectively meet the needs of steel enterprises and has significant engineering significance. © 2023 Technical Committee on Control Theory, Chinese Association of Automation.

Thermal analysis is a crucial and time-consuming step in the optimization design process of high-frequency transformers (HFTs). This paper proposes an improved thermal analysis method based on heat dissipation-conduction two-step simulation, significantly reducing the computation time while ensuring the accuracy of thermal analysis. Simulation results validate the accuracy and of the proposed method and demonstrate that the proposed method saves 82% of computation time for a single thermal analysis case compared to direct CFD. Experimental results further verify the accuracy of the proposed method. An exemplary application of the proposed method in the optimization design of the HFT illustrates a 98% reduction in computation time for thermal analysis during the optimization process. © 2025 IEEE.
