Metaverse encapsulates our expectations of the next-generation Internet, while bringing new key performance indicators (KPIs). Although conventional ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC) can satisfy objective KPIs, it is difficult to provide a personalized immersive experience that is a distinctive feature of the Metaverse. Since the quality of experience (QoE) can be regarded as a comprehensive KPI, the URLLC is evolved towards the next generation URLLC (xURLLC) with a personalized resource allocation scheme to achieve higher QoE. To deploy Metaverse xURLLC services, we study the interaction between the Metaverse service provider (MSP) and the network infrastructure provider (InP), and provide an optimal contract design framework. Specifically, the utility of the MSP, defined as a function of Metaverse users' QoE, is to be maximized, while ensuring the incentives of the InP. To model the QoE mathematically, we propose a novel metric named Meta-Immersion that incorporates both the objective KPIs and subjective feelings of Metaverse users. Furthermore, we develop an attention-aware rendering capacity allocation scheme to improve QoE in xURLLC. Using a user-object-attention level dataset, we validate that the xURLLC can achieve an average of 20.1% QoE improvement compared to the conventional URLLC with a uniform resource allocation scheme. Short linewidth light lasers are essential for a wide range of applications, including quantum computing, spectroscopy, and sensing. Stimulated Brillouin scattering is an intriguing method for achieving extremely coherent light laser output. The demonstration of an unstable pulsed Brillouin erbium fiber laser (BFL) operating at kHz is shown here. The BFL works at 1550.1 nm, which is 0.09 nm higher than the Brillouin pump wavelength since the dispersion compensating fiber was pumped over the 24.77 mW threshold. It has an extreme power of 0.7 dBm, a side-mode suppression ratio of 29 dB, and a pump power of 59.12 mW at 980 nm. Due to the intrinsic instability in relaxation oscillation, which generates the nonlinear self-pulsing mechanism in the BEFL cavity, the BEFL produced a pulse train running at 200.9 kHz with a 24.77 mW pump. The pulse frequency was raised to 3.02 MHz. The pump power has been increased to 59.12 mW. Yet, as the pump power was raised further, more than one pulse was produced. This is the first example of generating kHz pulses in a BFL cavity. The laser system is straightforward, small, and all-fiber. These are the attempts of experimental work to realize the BFL with Q-switched multi-wavelength output using a specific length of DCF to generate the pulses.

Performance Analysis of Free-Space Information Sharing in Full-Duplex Semantic Communications

In next-generation Internet services, such as Metaverse, the mixed reality (MR) technique plays a vital role. Yet the limited computing capacity of the user-side MR headset-mounted device (HMD) prevents its further application, especially in scenarios that require a lot of computation. One way out of this dilemma is to design an efficient information sharing scheme among users to replace the heavy and repetitive computation. In this paper, we propose a free-space information sharing mechanism based on full-duplex device-to-device (D2D) semantic communications. Specifically, the view images of MR users in the same real-world scenario may be analogous. Therefore, when one user (i.e., a device) completes some computation tasks, the user can send his own calculation results and the semantic features extracted from the user’s own view image to nearby users (i.e., other devices). On this basis, other users can use the received semantic features to obtain the spatial matching of the computational results under their own view images without repeating the computation. Using generalized small-scale fading models, we analyze the key performance indicators of full-duplex D2D communications, including channel capacity and bit error probability, which directly affect the transmission of semantic information. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) has become an ideal medium for long-term storage and retrieval due to its extremely high storage density and long-term stability. But access efficiency is an existing bottleneck in DNA storage, especially the lack of high-quality random access address sequences. Therefore, in this paper, we report a series of approaches based on k-weakly mutually uncorrelated (k-WMU) codes to design the address sequence to improve the access efficiency of DNA storage. To address the problem of DNA sequences that are poorly scalable at the base level, we propose a 0-m-ruling coding scheme combined with k-WMU codes that can make address sequences avoid generating secondary structure with stem lengths ranging from 3 to 9. Based on the decoupled structure, We further extend the k-WMU codes with error correction function while satisfying combinatorial biological constraints. In order to investigate the performance of the designed address sequences for real-world applications, we perform simulation experiments based on thermodynamic properties and error correction capability as well as compared the minimum free energy (MFE), melting temperature (TM), and average decoding success rate (ADSR) with previous work. The results show that designed address sequences have a high MFE value and ADSR and a substantial reduction in TM-variance while satisfying the combinatorial biological constraints. As the quality of address sequences improves, this will help to achieve accurate random access as well as enhance the robustness of the DNA storage system. © 2002-2011 IEEE.

Deep Subspace Encoders for Nonlinear System Identification

Using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) for nonlinear system identification has proven to be a promising approach, but despite of all recent research efforts, many practical and theoretical problems still remain open. Specifically, noise handling and models, issues of consistency and reliable estimation under minimisation of the prediction error are the most severe problems. The latter comes with numerous practical challenges such as explosion of the computational cost in terms of the number of data samples and the occurrence of instabilities during optimization. In this paper, we aim to overcome these issues by proposing a method which uses a truncated prediction loss and a subspace encoder for state estimation. The truncated prediction loss is computed by selecting multiple truncated subsections from the time series and computing the average prediction loss. To obtain a computationally efficient estimation method that minimizes the truncated prediction loss, a subspace encoder represented by an artificial neural network is introduced. This encoder aims to approximate the state reconstructability map of the estimated model to provide an initial state for each truncated subsection given past inputs and outputs. By theoretical analysis, we show that, under mild conditions, the proposed method is locally consistent, increases optimization stability, and achieves increased data efficiency by allowing for overlap between the subsections. Lastly, we provide practical insights and user guidelines employing a numerical example and state-of-the-art benchmark results. © 2022, CC BY.

Microcombs are revolutionizing optoelectronics by providing parallel, mutually coherent wavelengthchannels for time-frequency metrology and information processing. To implement this essential function inintegrated photonic systems, it is desirable to drive microcombs directly with an on-chip laser in a simpleand flexible way. However, two major difficulties have prevented this goal: (1) generating mode-lockedcomb states usually requires a significant amount of pump power and (2) the requirement to align laser andresonator frequency significantly complicates operation and limits the tunability of the comb lines. Here, weaddress these problems by using microresonators on an AlGaAs on-insulator platform to generate dark-pulsemicrocombs. This highly nonlinear platform dramatically relaxes fabrication requirements and leads to arecord-low pump power of <1 mW for coherent comb generation. Dark-pulse microcombs facilitated bythermally controlled avoided mode crossings are accessed by direct distributed feedback laser *** any feedback or control circuitries, the comb shows good coherence and stability. With around150 mW on-chip power, this approach also leads to an unprecedentedly wide tuning range of over one freespectral range (97.5 GHz). Our work provides a route to realize power-efficient, simple, and reconfigurablemicrocombs that can be seamlessly integrated with a wide range of photonic systems.

In this work, we studied the response of an antipodal Vivaldi antenna in the presence of different types of mice liver models. The scope of the study was limited to two types of liver diseases, i.e., nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and fibrosis. The complex dielectric properties of each liver type were measured using the open-ended coaxial probe dielectric spectroscopy method. A Vivaldi antenna for near-field sensing was designed and then simulated in CST Studio to determine the antenna characteristics. The antenna performance from the simulation matched the reflection coefficients (S11) measurements collected with the fabricated antenna in an anechoic chamber. This verified antenna was used for further measurements of different liver models placed near the antenna. The antenna response, S11 measurements, varied from one tissue type to another, demonstrating the potential of using the Vivaldi antenna as a near-field sensor to differentiate liver disease models from the healthy liver model.

On the Effects and Optimal design of Redundant Sensors in Collaborative State Estimation

The existence of redundant sensors in collaborative state estimation is a common occurrence, yet their true significance remains elusive. This paper comprehensively investigates the effects and optimal design of redundant sensors in sensor networks that use Kalman filtering to estimate the state of a random process collaboratively. The paper presents two main results: a theoretical analysis of the effects of redundant sensors and an engineering-oriented optimal design of redundant sensors. In the theoretical analysis, the paper leverages Riccati equations and Symplectic matrix theory to unveil the explicit role of redundant sensors in cooperative state estimation. The results unequivocally demonstrate that the addition of redundant sensors enhances the estimation performance of the sensor network, aligning with the principle of "more is better". Moreover, the paper establishes a precise sufficient and necessary condition to assess whether the inclusion of redundant sensors improves the overall estimation performance. Moving towards engineering-oriented design optimization, the paper proposes a novel algorithm to tackle the optimal design problem of redundant sensors, and the convergence of the proposed algorithm is guaranteed. Hierarchy-Aware and Channel-Adaptive Semantic Communication for Bandwidth-Limited Data Fusion

Obtaining high-resolution hyperspectral images (HR-HSI) is costly and data-intensive, making it necessary to fuse low-resolution hyperspectral images (LR-HSI) with high-resolution RGB images (HR-RGB) for practical applications. However, traditional fusion techniques, which integrate detailed information into the reconstruction, significantly increase bandwidth consumption compared to directly transmitting raw data. To overcome these challenges, we propose a hierarchy-aware and channel-adaptive semantic communication approach for bandwidth-limited data fusion. A hierarchical correlation module is proposed to preserve both the overall structural information and the details of the image required for super-resolution. This module efficiently combines deep semantic and shallow features from LR-HSI and HR-RGB. To further reduce bandwidth usage while preserving reconstruction quality, a channel-adaptive attention mechanism based on Transformer is proposed to dynamically integrate and transmit the deep and shallow features, enabling efficient data transmission and high-quality HR-HSI reconstruction. Experimental results on the CAVE and Washington DC Mall datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms single-source transmission, achieving up to a 2 dB improvement in peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR). Additionally, it reduces bandwidth consumption by two-thirds, confirming its effectiveness in bandwidth-constrained environments for HR-HSI reconstruction tasks. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. This paper investigates stealthy attacks on sampled-data control systems, where a continuous process is sampled periodically, and the resultant discrete output and control signals are transmitted through dual channels in wireless communication networks. Acknowledging the vulnerability of these transmitted data to cyber threats, we analyze two types of stealthy attacks that compromise either one or both channels. We explicitly present the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of stealthy single-channel attacks. To mitigate these security risks, we implement encryption-based countermeasures, including linear time-invariant and periodic encryption methods. We detail sufficient conditions under which these encryption strategies effectively thwart single- and dual-channel stealthy attacks. The effectiveness of these approaches and the theoretical findings are demonstrated through numerical simulations. © 1963-2012 IEEE.
