The subjects computersystems Analysis and computersystems Design within the computer systems engineering degree at UTS concern themselves with the specification, architecture, design and implementation of a computer based system of moderate complexity, covering electrical and mechanical hardware, computer hardware and software. Students are expected to develop the system to appropriate standards, using suitable techniques, within a defined process and operating within a team. The computer based system is concerned with the problem of the automatic assembly of (pseudo) chocolates into (pseudo) chocolate boxes. There are a variety of boxes and a variety of chocolates, which have to be assembled to (operator entered) orders. The class is divided into teams. A team comprises five groups. Each of four groups is responsible for one of the major subassemblies, and the fifth group is responsible for the systemsengineering and telecommunications. The major subassemblies are the assembly robot, the box conveyor and (Vision) recognition system, the chocolate recognition system, and the supervisory control system. The project has been running for five years and this paper summarises the history, reports on the development and analyses educational aspects. Student appreciation of the subjects has been entirely positive, with the most often made comment that finally they have understood why they have studied engineering for the previous four to five years.

Software engineers today should be knowledgeable in computersystems, which encompasses electronics hardware, software, and networking. Because computer systems engineering is a very broad and rapidly changing discipline, there is a need to have a unified methodology for both students and practitioners. Patterns, and pattern languages for software development have received considerable attention over the last few years, and this approach, based on work originally done in architecture and urban planning, supports methodology development, dissemination, and evolution. This paper discusses patterns and pattern languages of computersystems as unifying themes and underpinnings for undergraduate and postgraduate curricula. Most of a sample curriculum has been implemented within undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in computer systems engineering at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia. The sample curriculum is described here, along with preliminary feedback from students and lecturers. The net result is steps toward a methodology that allows students to learn to systematically develop computer software, electronics hardware, and networked systems.

This paper presents Toshiba Corporation's computer application systemsengineering center (CASEC). First, an overview of CASEC is described, including the center's production environment. Then, some of the management systems-including SOFPIT (software profit improvement tactics) designed for delegated cost management, and Toshiba's corporate-wide software-reuse library system. The decades of experience have demonstrated that the production of high-quality software is heavily dependent on human factors. For this reason the authors devised schemes and mechanisms to enforce basic rules for software production and management. These mechanisms include involving management and experts in the design-review process, FFQM (feed forward quality management), the introduction of management-level rankings, and software QCC (quality control circles) activities. Finally, the paper presents an education system by which CASEC trains systems engineers and programmers.< >

Web-based multimedia tutorials are being developed for use in several undergraduate courses in electrical engineering and computer and systemsengineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA. These interactive learning modules (ILMs) are created with the Director authoring environment and can be deployed using a standard Web browser with Macromedia's Shockwave plug-in as the interface. The ILMs can be used by faculty for in-class presentations and demonstrations, by students for in-class, structured exercises (particularly in the studio format of course delivery) and by students anytime, anywhere via the Internet to explore concepts in more detail and gain practical experience in design and application. The ILMs are developed to provide application-based motivation for learning, present fundamental concepts using animation and visualization and provide interactive practice on problem-solving and open-ended design experience. ILMs are now available on the 555 timer IC, an electrical engineering fundamentals handbook (EE handbook), an electronics circuit card manufacturing handbook, common-emitter amplifier design, analog filters, operational amplifiers, Fourier analysis and convolution. They are currently being used in introductory courses in circuits, electronics, instrumentation and signals and systems, all of which are moving to the studio format. Initial experiences by both faculty and students have been very positive. The combination of interactive learning modules and the studio format of course delivery present a fundamentally new model for the delivery of engineering education.

People-centric activity recognition is one of the most critical technologies in a wide range of real-world applications, including intelligent transportation systems, healthcare services, and brain-computer interfaces. Large-scale data collection and annotation make the application of machine learning algorithms prohibitively expensive when adapting to new tasks. One way of circumventing this limitation is to train the model in a semi-supervised learning manner that utilizes a percentage of unlabeled data to reduce the labeling burden in prediction tasks. Despite their appeal, these models often assume that labeled and unlabeled data come from similar distributions, which leads to the domain shift problem caused by the presence of distribution gaps. To address these limitations, we propose herein a novel method for people-centric activity recognition, called domain generalization with semi-supervised learning(DGSSL), that effectively enhances the representation learning and domain alignment capabilities of a model. We first design a new autoregressive discriminator for adversarial training between unlabeled and labeled source domains, extracting domain-specific features to reduce the distribution gaps. Second, we introduce two reconstruction tasks to capture the task-specific features to avoid losing information related to representation learning while maintaining task-specific consistency. Finally, benefiting from the collaborative optimization of these two tasks, the model can accurately predict both the domain and category labels of the source domains for the classification task. We conduct extensive experiments on three real-world sensing datasets. The experimental results show that DGSSL surpasses the three state-of-the-art methods with better performance and generalization.
