As online social media content continues to grow, so does the spread of hate speech. Hate speech has devastating consequences unless it is detected and monitored early. Recently, deep neural network-based hate speech detection models, particularly conventional single-channel Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), have achieved remarkable performance. However, the effectiveness of the models depends on the type of language they are trained on and the training data size. We argue that the effectiveness of the models could further be enhanced if we use multi-channel CNN models even for under-resourced languages that have limited training data size. This is because the single-channel CNN might fail to consider the potential effect of multiple channels to generate better features, which is not well investigated for hate speech detection. Therefore, in this work, we explore the use of multi-channel CNN to extract better features from different channels in an end-to-end manner on top of a word2vec embedding layer. Tested on a new small-scale Amharic hate speech dataset containing 2000 annotated social media comments, the experimental results show that the proposed multi-channel CNN model outperforms the single-channel CNN models but underperform from the baseline Support Vector Machine (SVM) with an average F-score of 81.3%, 78.2%, and 92.5% respectively. The finding of the study implies that the proposed MC-CNN model can be used as an alternative solution for hate speech detection using a deep learning approach when dataset scarcity is an issue. © 2022, ICST Institute for computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications engineering.

Radio frequency energy harvesting has attracted considerable interest as a technique of enabling self-powered wireless networks. This technique faces several challenges, such as the receiving and the rectifying modules of a rectenna system. Multiband antennas provide several comparative advantages against the goal of maximizing the amount of energy harvesting. In this work, we present a multiband microstrip patch antenna with three slits operating in the LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) and the cellular (GSM-1800 and UMTS) communication frequency bands. A feasible solution of the antenna is obtained by the application of a recently introduced nature-inspired optimization technique, namely the Coyote Optimization Algorithm. The proposed antenna operates satisfactorily in the LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) and the cellular (GSM-1800 and UMTS) communication frequency bands. Measured results of the proposed antenna exhibit an acceptable performance (multiband frequency operation, maximum gain of 3.94 dBi, broadside operation) and demonstrate features of operation, which make it a strong candidate for various RF energy harvesting applications. © 2020 IEEE.

The increasing use of digital payment systems has led to a rise in fraudulent activities, presenting a significant challenge in ensuring secure transactions. This research focuses on implementing the Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm with a Radial Basis Function (RBF) kernel to detect fraud in digital payment systems. One of the main challenges addressed in this study is the severe class imbalance in the dataset, where fraudulent transactions account for only 0.17% of total transactions. To overcome this, the SMOTE (Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique) method was applied to balance the dataset, allowing the model to better recognize fraudulent patterns. The results indicate that the SVM model achieved an accuracy of 99.93%, with a precision of 86.23% and a recall of 75.51%. These results demonstrate that SVM, combined with SMOTE and RBF kernel, is highly effective in detecting fraudulent transactions while minimizing false positives. This research provides a strong foundation for improving fraud detection models in the context of digital payment systems, offering enhanced security and trust for users. Further research could explore hybrid models and real-time data analysis to improve performance.

In this paper, the influence of different Phase-Locked Loops (PLLs) on the fault response of a grid-following (GFL) Inverter-Based Resource (IBR) is evaluated. The analyzed IBR represents a wind power plant with rated power equal to 100 MVA, being composed of 50 turbines with 2 MVA each, whose controls follow the Brazilian grid code. Two PLL models are taken into account to conduct the proposed studies, which include the analysis of voltage and frequency estimated by each PLL, and currents injected into the IBR interconnection transmission line. The Synchronous Reference Frame (SRF) PLL and the Quadrature Signal Generator-based Second-Order Generalized Integrator (QSG-SOGI) PLL are considered, assessing their influence under different transmission line fault scenarios. The obtained results indicate that the PLL can present severe instabilities during faults, which can be more or less critical depending on the fault type and on the PLL type. Indeed, the results reveal that different PLLs can result in distinct behaviors of currents injected into the interconnection line, raising the importance of knowing the PLL structures when studies on IBR fault responses are of interest.

The dental panoramic radiograph (DPR) is a pivotal diagnostic tool in dentistry. However, despite the growing prevalence of artificial intelligence (AI) across various medical domains, manual methods remain the prevailing means of interpreting DPR images. This study aims to introduce an advanced identification system for detecting seven dental conditions in DPR images by utilizing Faster R-CNN. The primary objectives are to enhance dentists' efficiency and evaluate the performance of various CNN models as foundational training networks. This study contributes significantly to the field in several notable ways. Firstly, including a Butterworth filter in the training process yielded an approximately 7% enhancement in judgment accuracy. Secondly, the proposed enhancement technology tailored to different dental symptoms effectively bolstered the training model's accuracy. Consequently, all dental conditions attained an accuracy rate exceeding 95% in CNN analysis. These accuracy enhancements ranged from 1.34% to 13.24% compared to existing recognition technologies. Thirdly, this study pioneers the application of Faster R-CNN for identifying dental conditions, achieving an impressive accuracy rate of 94.18%. The outcomes of this study mark a substantial advancement compared to prior research and offer dentists a more efficient and convenient means of pre-diagnosing dental conditions. © 2013 IEEE.

The Internet of Everything (IoE) is the paradigm of intelligent services that supports a ubiquitous and always-connected world of smart sensors and actuators, human and non-human in a cyber-physical lifestyle. Recent years have witnessed the fast proliferation of smart devices. In addition, these functional smart sensors possess powerful computation and communication capabilities and contribute to intelligent services outcomes of IoE-based applications. Then by adopting a knowledge-based approach on sensors smartness, we make a comparative assessment and classify smart sensors (image sensors, temperature sensors, proximity sensors, speed sensors, and sound sensors) regarding intelligence levels. We extracted valuable conclusions and inferences from this classification, providing insights and future directions towards promised benefits offered by distilled intelligence in smart sensors applications. Early recognition of clinical deterioration (CD) has vital importance in patients’ survival from exacerbation or death. Electronic health records (EHRs) data have been widely employed in Early Warning Scores (EWS) to measure CD risk in hospitalized patients. Recently, EHRs data have been utilized in Machine Learning (ML) models to predict mortality and CD. The ML models have shown superior performance in CD prediction compared to EWS. Since EHRs data are structured and tabular, conventional ML models are generally applied to them, and less effort is put into evaluating the artificial neural network’s performance on EHRs data. Thus, in this article, an extremely boosted neural network (XBNet) is used to predict CD, and its performance is compared to eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and random forest (RF) models. For this purpose, 103,105 samples from thirteen Brazilian hospitals are used to generate the models. Moreover, the principal component analysis (PCA) is employed to verify whether it can improve the adopted models’ performance. The performance of ML models and Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS), an EWS candidate, are evaluated in CD prediction regarding the accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and geometric mean (G-mean) metrics in a 10-fold cross-validation approach. The carbon brushes and slip rings of a hydrogen-erator are the main components guiding the excitation current from the bridge to the rotor windings. The brushes' temperature are crucial to infer their operational condition and, the generator status. This work presents the temperature measurement of six Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) sensors installed in a 370 MVA electric generator brushes. The results show the sensors' capacity to monitor the brushes' temperature in accordance with the current flowing through them. Together with the sensors, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) technique was applied to the measured temperature to detect anomalous events regarding the current supplied to the rotor windings. The optical sensors combined with the AI could detect five events of abnormal current behaviour. One is presented in detail in this paper. This sensing system can be further applied to online fault detection using the temperature measured by the FBGs as a brush condition indicator and a generator operation and maintenance tool.

This work demonstrates the development of a prototype system that could improve urban and digital accessibility for People with Disability - PwD. The research involves using an academic questionnaire to enable a wider perspective of the central subject and assessing the effectiveness of the proposed solution. The main goal is to help social integration and make the future solution implementable for smart cities through an experiment in an academic campus. The dissertation is related to technological and social issues that might be used as a resource by researchers, public or private bodies interested in more profound studies. The document recognizes the lack of studies on this subject, especially in Brazil because there are few available articles. The prototype system is designed to tackle the issues faced by persons with disability in urban settings through platforms, applications and mobile phones as it proposes a comprehensive set of solutions when addressing accessibility for PwDs. In turn, this research fosters knowledge advancements in the field of urban accessibility and provides vital recommendations for developing inclusive technologies and policies.

Infertile patients may be a high-risk group of mental disorder. The precise identification of the mental status of infertile patients can provide decision support to healthcare professionals and may be helpful in providing preventive measures accordingly. Rare studies focused on the mental status identification using artificial intelligence (AI) models for infertile people. This study aimed to precisely identify the mental status (anxiety and depression) of infertile patients using three AI models, the XGBoost, decision tree, and stacking models. The dataset, retrieved from a structured questionnaire survey in 2011, which included 400 infertility outpatients seeking reproductive treatments at three teaching hospitals in Taiwan was adopted for training and testing AI models. Aforementioned AI models were designed and reached identification performances of accuracy, precision, recall and area under ROC curve (AUC) equaling 0.75–0.82, 0.70–0.80, 0.64–0.72, and 0.64–0.72, respectively. The XGBoost model (accuracy = 0.82, precision = 0.80, recall = 0.72, and AUC = 0.72) outperformed or equaled the decision tree and stacking models in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, and AUC values. Designed AI models for mental status identification can be integrated into the clinical decision support system (CDSS) to provide the anxiety and depression group automatically. Accordingly, the worsening of infertility-related anxiety and depression can be prevented. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
