Modeling and understanding BitTorrent (BT) dynamics is a recurrent research topic mainly due to its high complexity and tremendous practical efficiency. Over the years, different models have uncovered various phenomena exhibited by the system, many of which have direct impact on its performance. In this paper we identify and characterize a phenomenon that has not been previously observed: homogeneous peers (with respect to their upload capacities) experience heterogeneous download times. This behavior has direct impact on peer and system performance, such as high variability of download times, unfairness with respect to peer arrival order, bursty departures and content synchronization. Detailed packet-level simulations and prototype-based experiments on the Internet were performed to characterize this phenomenon. We also develop a mathematical model that accurately predicts the heterogeneous download rates of the homogeneous peers as a function of their content. In addition, we apply the model to calculate lower and upper bounds to the number of departures that occur in a burst. The heterogeneous download rates are more prevalent in unpopular swarms (very few peers). Although few works have addressed this kind of swarm, these by far represent the most common type of swarm in BT. © 2021, CC BY.

In recent years, digital technologies have been used to support discussions about the city and also to involve citizens in participatory public processes. However, despite the widespread use of social media platforms, old issues related to engagement and participation still persist in digital initiatives. The main goal of this study is to carry out an empirical evaluation of a collective intelligence model that combines crowdsourcing and social storytelling to support discussions about the city from a bottom-up perspective. Within a design science research approach we designed a participatory action study that was carried out through a workshop with students and professionals from different areas, such as architecture, urban design and information technology. As a result, we were able to assess whether the collective intelligence model was acceptable to the participants by investigating whether the behavioral assumptions were valid and thus outlining some contributions to the field of urban informatics.

Semantic communication technologies enable wireless edge devices to communicate effectively by transmitting semantic meaning of data. Edge components, such as vehicles in next-generation intelligent transport systems, use well-trained semantic models to encode and decode semantic information extracted from raw and sensor data. However, the limitation in computing resources makes it difficult to support the training process of accurate semantic models on edge devices. As such, edge devices can buy the pretrained semantic models from semantic model providers, which is called "semantic model trading". Upon collecting semantic information with the semantic models, the edge devices can then sell the extracted semantic information, e.g., information about urban road conditions or traffic signs, to the interested buyers for profit, which is called "semantic information trading". To facilitate both types of the trades, effective incentive mechanisms should be designed. Thus, in this paper, we propose a hierarchical trading system to support both semantic model trading and semantic information trading jointly. The proposed incentive mechanism helps to maximize the revenue of semantic model providers in the semantic model trading, and effectively incentivizes model providers to participate in the development of semantic communication systems. For semantic information trading, our designed auction approach can support the trading between multiple semantic information sellers and buyers, while ensuring individual rationality, incentive compatibility, and budget balance, and moreover, allowing them achieve higher utilities than the baseline method. Vibrations transmitted throughout the hand and arm during touch contact play a central role in haptic science and engineering but are challenging to model or experimentally characterize. Here, we present SkinSource, a data-driven toolbox for predicting skin vibrations across the upper limb in response to user-specified input forces. The toolbox leverages impulse response measurements that encode the physics of vibration transmission across the hands and arms of four participants and provides software tools for analyzing the predicted skin responses. We show that the SkinSource predictions closely match experimental measurements and confirm the underlying assumption of linear vibration transmission in the skin. We also demonstrate through several usage examples how SkinSource can act as a versatile computational platform for haptic research applications, such as characterizing vibrotactile transmission in the skin, engineering haptic interfaces, and investigating touch perception.

The state of the art of artificial intelligence (AI) for various medical imaging applications leads to enhanced accuracy, analysis, visualization, and interpretation of chest Xray (CXR) images for diagnosis. Many diseases are diagnosed based on CXR images. In this paper, two types of abnormalities are diagnosed based on AI techniques. The two classes are atelectasis and cardiomegaly. The acquired images are segmented to localize the chest region and then enhanced using gray-level transformation methods. The enhanced images are passed to two pretrained convolutional neural networks (CNNs): shuffle and mobile net. The transfer learning approach is utilized in this stage. The automated features are extracted from the last fully connected layer. Each CNN deserves to have the two most representative features for the two classes. These four features are passed to support the vector machine classifier. The training accuracy reached 100% and the test accuracy was 96.7%. The proposed method can be extended to be a milestone in the classification of all heart-lung diseases that can be diagnosed using chest X-ray images.

TERMinator: A Neural Framework for Structure-Based Protein Design using Tertiary Repeating Motifs

Computational protein design has the potential to deliver novel molecular structures, binders, and catalysts for myriad applications. Recent neural graph-based models that use backbone coordinate-derived features show exceptional performance on native sequence recovery tasks and are promising frameworks for design. A statistical framework for modeling protein sequence landscapes using Tertiary Motifs (TERMs), compact units of recurring structure in proteins, has also demonstrated good performance on protein design tasks. In this work, we investigate the use of TERM-derived data as features in neural protein design frameworks. Our graph-based architecture, TERMinator, incorporates TERM-based and coordinate-based information and outputs a Potts model over sequence space. TERMinator outperforms state-of-the-art models on native sequence recovery tasks, suggesting that utilizing TERM-based and coordinate-based features together is beneficial for protein design. © 2022, CC BY.

Dealing with resolution variations in dual-temporal remote sensing images is challenging due to differences in sensor capabilities, altitudes, footprints, resampling, and data fusion. Conventional methods for different-resolution change detection struggle to effectively address these challenges, primarily due to insufficient consideration of global and local feature interactions. In this paper, we propose a novel change detection model that leverages the power of multi-scale resolution fusion(MRF). By incorporating the MRF-Block, our approach extracts hierarchical multi-scale features from the input data, enabling effective capture of contextual information at various granularities. This facilitates improved handling of resolution disparities and promotes interactions between global and local features. Experimental evaluations conducted on diverse datasets, demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed model in achieving accurate change detection in dual-temporal remote sensing imagery, even in scenarios characterized by varying resolutions. Forged content shared widely on social media platforms is a major social problem that requires increased regulation and poses new challenges to the research community. The recent proliferation of hyper-realistic deepfake videos has drawn attention to the threat of audio and visual forgeries. Most previous work on detecting AI-generated fake videos only utilizes visual modality or audio modality. While there are some methods in the literature that exploit audio and visual modalities to detect forged videos, they have not been comprehensively evaluated on multi-modal datasets of deepfake videos involving acoustic and visual manipulations. Moreover, these existing methods are mostly based on CNN and suffer from low detection accuracy. Inspired by the recent success of Transformer in various fields, to address the challenges posed by deepfake technology, in this paper, we propose an Audio-Visual Transformer-based Ensemble Network (AVTENet) framework that considers both acoustic manipulation and visual manipulation to achieve effective video forgery detection. Specifically, the proposed model integrates several purely transformer-based variants that capture video, audio, and audio-visual salient cues to reach a consensus in prediction. For evaluation, we use the recently released benchmark multi-modal audio-video FakeAVCeleb dataset. For a detailed analysis, we evaluate AVTENet, its variants, and several existing methods on multiple test sets of the FakeAVCeleb dataset. Experimental results show that our best model outperforms all existing methods and achieves state-of-the-art performance on Testset-I and Testset-II of the FakeAVCeleb dataset. © 2023, CC BY.

Palladium is the most prominent material in both scientific and industrial research on gas storage,purification,detection,and catalysis due to its unique properties as a catalyst and hydrogen *** the dynamic optical phenomena of palladium reacting with hydrogen,transduction of the gas-matter reaction into light-matter interaction is attempted to visualize the dynamic surface chemistry and reaction *** simple geometry of the metal-dielectric-metal structure,Fabry-Perot etalon,is employed for a colorimetric reactor,to display the catalytic reaction of the exposed gas via water-film/bubble formation at the dielectric/palladium *** adsorption/desorption behavior and catalytic reaction of hydrogen and oxygen on the palladium surface display highly repeatable and dramatic color changes based on two distinct water formation trends:the foggy effect by water bubbles and the whiteout effect by water film *** and experiments demonstrate the robustness of the proposed Fabry-Perot etalon as an excellent platform for monitoring the opto-physical phenomena driven by heterogeneous catalysis.
