The Heroine’s Learning Journey (HLJ) is an educational framework addressing gender disparities in STEM. Supported by the FOSTWOM project, it motivates young women through innovative practices and international collaboration. Drawing on heroic narratives from Campbell’s Hero’s Journey and Murdock’s Heroine’s Journey, HLJ integrates these stories with the Heroines Learning System (HeLaS), a digital platform for scalable and adaptable learning environments. This model aims to enhance female participation in STEM courses and assess the societal impact of HLJ. The Heroine’s Learning Journey has been implemented in educational settings, including online courses and a case study in the rural community of Recreio, Brazil. We collected quantitative and qualitative data to evaluate the model’s effectiveness. The results demonstrate the HLJ’s potential to inspire systemic change by fostering a more inclusive and diverse STEM landscape. This research highlights the importance of innovative educational approaches in driving societal transformation and shaping the future of STEM education.

Formation Flying Techniques for the Virtual Telescope for X-Ray Observations

The Virtual Telescope for X-Ray Observations (VTXO) is an Astrophysics SmallSat mission being developed to demonstrate 10-milliarcsecond X-ray imaging using a Phase Fresnel Lense (PFL)-based space telescope. PFLs promise to provide several orders of magnitude improvement in angular resolution over current state of the art X-ray optics. However, PFLs for astronomical applications requires a very long focal length, for VTXO the focal length is estimated to be in the range of 0.5 km to 4 km. Since these focal lengths are not feasible on a single spacecraft, the proposed solution is to use two separate spacecraft, one with the lense(s), and the second with an X-ray camera. These two spacecrafts will then fly in a formation approximating a single rigid telescope. In order to achieve this configuration, the two spacecraft must maintain the formation a focal length distance apart, with centimeter level control, and sub-millimeter level knowledge requirements. Additionally, for the telescope to achieve sufficient exposure time, the system must keep the telescope axis pointed at a fixed target on the celestial sphere for durations on the order of a few hours. VTXO’s system architecture calls for two CubeSats to operate in a highly eccentric Earth orbit with one of the spacecraft’s traveling on a natural keplarian orbit. The second spacecraft will then fly on a "pseudo" orbit maintaining a fixed offset relative to the celestial sphere during observations. Observations with this system will occur near apogee where differential forces on the spacecrafts are minimal which in turn minimizes fuel consumption. The "pseudo" orbit where the second spacecraft is located is not quite a stable orbit requiring small continuous propulsion to maintain formation. This paper and presentation will overview VTXO’s system architecture, additionally it will look in depth at the formation flying techniques, including fuel consumption, and methods for establishing, and maintaining the formation. Currently, the growth of information and technology is rapid. It makes a lot of things in various fields including education becoming more effective and efficient. In education, one of its implementation which is a game is proven to be a useful tool to support conventional teaching methods and bring a more natural understanding of learning materials. Moreover, as a product of the popular culture in modern society, video game mirrors the general culture practice in real life and reflects it via its own culture inside the game. This makes a video game can give a contribution to the social construction of reality as it affects the player's view towards learning in real life and vice versa. From there, we see that there is an opportunity for learning about religion to be supported by its utilization to provide an interactive and fun learning experience. In this paper, we discuss how a video game is implemented to support religious learning. The game was developed with the scrum method where we surveyed to gather the user requirements before the design step. The game design was made by using the use case diagram and storyboard, and it was built using Unity version 2017.3.0f3. © 2019 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a cybersecurity exercise system in a virtual computer environment. The human resource development for security fields is an urgent issue because of the threat of cyber-attacks, recently, is increasing, many incidents occurring, but there is a not enough security personnel to respond. Some universities and companies are conducting education using a commercial training system on the market. However, built and operates the training system is expensive, therefore difficult to use in higher education institutions and SMEs. However, to build and operates, the training system needs high cost, thus difficult to use in higher education institutions and SMEs. For this reason, we developed the CyExec: a cybersecurity exercise system consisting of a virtual computer environment using VirtualBox and Docker. We also implemented the WebGoat that is an OSS vulnerability diagnosis and learning program on the CyExec and developed an attack and defense exercise program.

Predicting online item-choice behavior: A shape-restricted regression approach

This paper examines the relationship between user pageview (PV) histories and their item-choice behavior on an e-commerce website. We focus on PV sequences, which represent time series of the number of PVs for each user-item pair. We propose a shape-restricted optimization model that accurately estimates item-choice probabilities for all possible PV sequences. This model imposes monotonicity constraints on item-choice probabilities by exploiting partial orders for PV sequences, according to the recency and frequency of a user's previous PVs. To improve the computational efficiency of our optimization model, we devise efficient algorithms for eliminating all redundant constraints according to the transitivity of the partial orders. Experimental results using real-world clickstream data demonstrate that our method achieves higher prediction performance than that of a state-of-the-art optimization model and common machine learning methods. Brain functioning relies on specialized systems whose integration enables cognition and behavior. Network science provides tools to model the brain as a set of interconnected brain regions wherein those segregated systems (modules) can be identified by optimizing the weights of pairwise connections within them. However, knowledge alone of these pairwise connections might not suffice: brain dynamics are also engendered by higher-order interactions that simultaneously involve multiple brain areas. Here, we propose a community detection algorithm that accounts for multivariate interactions and finds modules of brain regions whose activity is maximally redundant. We compared redundancy-dominated modules to those identified with conventional methods, uncovering a new organization of the transmodal cortex. Moreover, by identifying a spatial resolution where within-module redundancy and between-module synergy are maximally balanced, we captured a higher-order manifestation of the interplay between segregation and integration of information. Finally, we distinguish brain regions with high and low topological specialization based on their contribution to within- or between-module redundancy, and we observed how redundant modules reconfigure across the lifespan. Altogether, the results show a modular organization of the brain that accounts for higher-order interactions and pave the way for future investigations that might link it to cognition, behavior, or disease.

Continuous glucose monitoring(CGM) technology has grown rapidly to track real-time blood glucose levels and trends with improved sensor accuracy. The ease of use and wide availability of CGM will facilitate safe and effective decision making for diabetes management. Here, we developed an attention-based deep learning model, CGMformer, pretrained on a well-controlled and diverse corpus of CGM data to represent individual's intrinsic metabolic state and enable clinical applications. During pretraining, CGMformer encodes glucose dynamics including glucose level, fluctuation, hyperglycemia, and hypoglycemia into latent space with self-supervised learning. It shows generalizability in imputing glucose value across five external datasets with different populations and metabolic states(MAE = 3.7 mg/d L). We then fine-tuned CGMformer towards a diverse panel of downstream tasks in the screening of diabetes and its complications using task-specific data, which demonstrated a consistently boosted predictive accuracy over direct fine-tuning on a single task(AUROC = 0.914 for type 2 diabetes(T2D) screening and 0.741 for complication screening). By learning an intrinsic representation of an individual's glucose dynamics,CGMformer classifies non-diabetic individuals into six clusters with elevated T2D risks, and identifies a specific cluster with lean body-shape but high risk of glucose metabolism disorders, which is overlooked by traditional glucose measurements. Furthermore, CGMformer achieves high accuracy in predicting an individual's postprandial glucose response with dietary modelling(Pearson correlation coefficient = 0.763)and helps personalized dietary recommendations. Overall, CGMformer pretrains a transformer neural network architecture to learn an intrinsic representation by borrowing information from a large amount of daily glucose profiles, and demonstrates predictive capabilities fine-tuned towards a broad range of downstream applications, holding promise for the ear

It is well accepted that an outward Marangoni convection from a low surface tension region will make the surface depressed. Here, we report that this established perception is only valid for thin liquid films. Using surface laser heating, we show that in deep liquids a laser beam actually pulls up the fluid above the free surface generating fountains with different shapes. Whereas with decreasing liquid depth a transition from fountain to indentation with fountain-in-indentation is observed. Further, high-speed imaging reveals a transient surface process before steady elevation is formed, and this dynamic deformation is subsequently utilized to resonantly excite giant surface waves by a modulated laser beam. Computational fluid dynamics models reveal the underlying flow patterns and quantify the depth-dependent and time-resolved surface deformations. Our discoveries and techniques have upended the century-old perception and opened up a new regime of interdisciplinary research and applications of Marangoni-induced interface phenomena and optocapillary fluidic surfaces - the control of fluids with light. © 2021, CC BY.
