Dynamic adaptation is the customization of a business process to make it applicable to a particular situation at any time of its life cycle. Adapting requires experience, and involves knowledge about various, internal and external, aspects of business. Thus, we argue for the application of adaptation rules, considering the context of a particular process instance. Furthermore, we state that a context-based adaptation environment should go beyond, and learn from decisions, as well as continuously identify new unforeseen situations (context definitions). The aim of this paper is to present a computational engine that infers the need to update situations and adaptation rules, suggesting changes to them. An application scenario is presented to discuss the usage of the proposal.

Increasingly stringent spectral spreading constraints are motivating a paradigm shift in the spectrum engineering of radar systems. Future spectrum requirements will likely dictate narrower spectral masks that will change based on geography. The desire to operate radar systems efficiently with waveforms that will provide desired detection capabilities must mesh with the need to meet spectral mask criteria. To this end, a collaborative research effort between Baylor University and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory has resulted in the design of reconfigurable circuit and waveform approaches to optimize spectral confinement, power efficiency, and detection capabilities. This paper surveys the joint optimization approach and describes innovations by the authors in circuit and waveform reconfiguration that will be useful in future flexible radar transmitters.

This paper is concerned with the problem of identifying a discrete-time dynamical system model for a gene regulatory network with unknown topology using time series gene expression data. The topology of such a network can be characterized by a set of regulation hypotheses, one for each gene. In our earlier work, we formulated a convex optimization method to select the regulation hypotheses (and hence the network topology). In this paper, we further optimize the dynamics of the inferred network. Specifically, for a given topology, we minimize the l_2 distance between the experimental data and the model prediction. We illustrate the performance of our algorithm by identifying models for gene networks with known topology.

We identified and organized a number of statements about technical debt (TD Folklore list) expressed by practitioners in online websites, blogs and published papers. We chose 14 statements and we evaluated them through two surveys (37 practitioners answered the questionnaires), ranking them by agreement and consensus. The statements most agreed with show that TD is an important factor in software project management and not simply another term for “bad code”. This study will help the research community in identifying folklore that can be translated into research questions to be investigated, thus targeting attempts to provide a scientific basis for TD management.

This paper presents a new Rössler chaotic system using exponential nonlinearity and its application to two-channel synchronization. The proposed chaotic system exhibits a chaotic attractor that resembles the original Rössler system with only six-term in three-dimensional ordinary equation systems using the exponential nonlinearity. Chaotic dynamics are described in terms of equilibria, Jacobian matrix, time domain waveforms, chaotic attractors, and bifurcation diagram. The circuit implementation is relatively compact and simple sine the exponential nonlinearity can be achieved by an inherent nonlinearity of single diode. An application to a two-channel secure communication are also demonstrated, showing a fast, low-error and robust synchronization processes.

While electromyography (EMG) is widely used in experimental physiotherapy (PT), its use as a diagnostic aid and supplementary tool in clinical PT remains limited. We report an integrated, wireless PT system for the forearm, which registers muscle movements via EMG, records and wirelessly transmits the data to a laptop computer, and runs software to discriminate between arm motions. The next step is to interface with a custom video game which responds to user movement and provides real-time biofeedback to the user, allowing them to visualize whether they are performing their PT exercise properly. Our device incorporates existing technologies into a functional ensemble compatible with both at-home and clinical use. Current testing (n=7 subjects) indicates that the sensor is capable of discriminating between 6 classes of PT exercises with 92% accuracy (2 classes with 96% accuracy).

The ambiguity function is a measure of a radar's range and Doppler detection capability. Cognitive radar systems require the capability to adjust the waveform in realtime to obtain desired range/Doppler detection capability while meeting stringent spectral requirements. While the ambiguity function of the waveform input to the transmitter can be simulated, it is the ambiguity function of the transmitter power amplifier's output waveform that will be used for the detection. As such, it is very helpful to be able to measure the ambiguity function output from a power amplifier in the optimization process. This paper describes a technique that can be used to quickly calculate the ambiguity function for the output waveform from the radar amplifier as measured on an oscilloscope. Brief examination is also given to the effect of amplifier nonlinearity on the ambiguity function.

Spectral spreading in radar systems is a concern that is related to the radar waveform. This paper describes a procedure to optimize a linear frequency-modulated chirp waveform for a desired ambiguity function while meeting spectral requirements. The minimax approach used for the optimization is described, and some example results for the optimization are presented. The integration of bench-top spectrum analyzer measurements into the optimization is presented, and the way forward in terms of measurement-based optimization is discussed.
