Software Product Lines (SPLs) have been used to develop mobile and context-aware applications, which provide services and data for their users from anywhere and at any time using context information. In SPLs, commonality and variability of a system family are identified and often documented in a feature model. However, the development of a feature model for mobile and context-aware SPLs is not trivial, since it should comprise system and context information. Furthermore, the consistency check of feature models in the considered domain is also complex and demands advanced skills of software engineers. This paper proposes a mechanism to formalize and verify the correctness and consistency of feature models for mobile and context-aware SPLs based on a profile enriched with OCL specifications. © 2011 IEEE.

Artificial bee colony (ABC) is an optimization algorithm inspired on the intelligent behavior of honey bee swarms. It is suitable to be applied when mathematical techniques are impractical or provide suboptimal solutions. As a population-based algorithm, the ABC suffers on large execution times specifically for embedded optimization problems with computational limitations. For that we propose a hardware parallel architecture of the opposition-based ABC algorithm (HPOABC) that facilitates the implementation in Field programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Numerical simulations using four well-known benchmark problems demonstrate that the opposition-based approach allows the algorithm to improve its functionality, preserving the swarm diversity. Additionally, synthesis results point outs that the HPOABC architecture is effectively mapped in hardware and is suitable for embedded applications.

This work extends Propositional Dynamic Logic (PDL) with parallel composition operator and four atomic programs which formalize the storing and recovering of elements in data structures. A generalization of Kripke semantics is proposed that instead of using set of possible states it uses structured sets of possible states. This new semantics allows for representing data structures and using the five new operator one is capable of reasoning about the manipulation of these data structures. The use of the new language (PRSPDL) is illustrated with some examples. We present sound and complete set of axiom schemata and inference rules to prove all the valid formulas for a restricted fragment called RSPDLo. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Designing an overlay network for publish/subscribe communication in a system where nodes may subscribe to many different topics of interest is of fundamental importance. For scalability and efficiency, it is important to keep the degree of the nodes in the publish/subscribe system low. It is only natural then to formalize the following problem: Given a collection of nodes and their topic subscriptions, connect the nodes into a graph that has least possible maximum degree in such a way that for each topic t, the graph induced by the nodes interested in t is connected. We present the first polynomial-time logarithmic approximation algorithm for this problem and prove an almost tight lower bound on the approximation ratio. Our experimental results show that our algorithm drastically improves the maximum degree of publish/subscribe overlay systems. We also propose a variation of the problem by enforcing that each topic-connected overlay network be of constant diameter while keeping the average degree low. We present three heuristics for this problem that guarantee that each topic-connected overlay network will be of diameter 2 and that aim at keeping the overall average node degree low. Our experimental results validate our algorithms, showing that our algorithms are able to achieve very low diameter without increasing the average degree by much. © 2011 IEEE.

Obtaining the Jacobian parameters for a nonlinear system, such as in X-parameter or S-function measurement, requires excitation of tickle tones either on or slightly off of the main harmonic frequencies. Traditional off-frequency measurements involve simultaneous excitation with tickle tones both slightly above and/or below a single harmonic frequency at a time. This paper describes a multiplexing technique for the excitation of the system with perturbations at all harmonics simultaneously. This technique requires both frequency and cross-frequency noninterference for successful results from the measurements. If these conditions exist for the nonlinear system, the off-frequency multiplexing technique for tickle tones can reduce the measurements necessary to find the Jacobian matrices by a factor equal to the number of harmonics considered in the polyharmonic distortion. These methods provide exact results for memoryless polynomial nonlinearities. © 2011 IEEE.

The Ray Tracing rendering algorithm can produce high-fidelity images of 3-D scenes, including shadow effects, as well as reflections and transparencies. This is currently done at a processing speed of at most 30 frames per second. Therefore, actual implementations of the algorithm are not yet suitable for interactive real-time rendering, which is required in games and virtual reality based applications. Fortunately, the algorithm allows for massive parallelization of its computations. In this paper, we present a parallel architecture for ray tracing based on a uniform spatial subdivision of the scene and exploiting an embedded computation of ray-triangle intersections. This approach allows for a significant acceleration of intersection computations, as well as, a reduction of the total number of the required intersections checks. Furthermore, it allows for these checks to be performed in parallel and in advance for each ray. In this paper we discuss and analyze an ASIP-based implementation using FPGAs and a GPGPU-based parallel implementation of the proposed architecture. The performance of both implementations are reported and compared." © 2011 IEEE.

The combination of testing techniques is considered an effective strategy to evaluate a software product. However, the selection of which techniques to combine in a software project has been an interesting challenge in the Software engineering field. This paper presents a proposal extending an approach developed to support the combined selection of model-based testing (MBT) techniques, named Porantim, applying Multiobjective Combinatorial Optimization strategy by determining the smallest dominating set in a bipartite and weighted graph. Thus, a local search strategy algorithm is proposed generating solutions aiming at maximizing the coverage of software project characteristics and skills required by the testing team to use the techniques and minimizing the eventual effort to construct models used for test cases generation. A preliminary evaluation analyzes this new approach when compared to the Porantim's original version, and the results indicate improvements in the MBT techniques selection. © 2011 IEEE.
