In recent years, there has been a tendency for people to resort to a more sedentary lifestyle, which has only been aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the evermore common remote work policies. This lack of physical activity brings negative health outcomes and can generally be difficult to overcome due to how challenging it can be for a person to find the motivation to adopt a more physically active routine. To address this issue, we propose the use of serious games as an engaging, fun, and highly motivational tool that can aid people in their quest for a healthier lifestyle. We focus on three problem areas: motor control improvement and rehabilitation, post-stroke rehabilitation, and physical activity for general health. There exist multiple solutions for these problems which often require specific equipment that may not be available to the common user. Therefore, we propose a different approach requiring solely a laptop equipped with a camera, thus making it more practical and accessible to the wider public. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper proposes a multi-scale control scheme aimed at controlling speed, dwell time, and charging time of electric and automated buses performing the transport service on lines where there are no reserved lanes. The proposed control scheme has two layers characterized by different control objectives, level of detail and time scales. The high-level controller periodically solves a multi-objective optimal control problem formalized to ensure an adequate transport service, while the low-level controller, being based on a more accurate description of the bus dynamics and energy consumption, seeks to follow the high-level control actions while taking into account the effective traffic conditions encountered on the line and the effective dynamic behaviour of the bus. The paper concludes with the application to a case study in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme. © 2024 IEEE.

This article introduces a novel mechatronic system for coupling the stems of seedlings and plants to wooden stakes or ropes, a crucial process for supporting them during growth, transportation, and fruiting in plant propagation facilities and greenhouses. The stem–stake coupling device utilizes interconnected mechanisms and an impedance control method to adjust motor torque and speed, shaping metallic wire into clips of various shapes and dimensions, effectively securing plant stems to stakes or ropes. In a robotic system, a claw-shaped arm mechanism, a stereo camera, and real-time vision techniques are integrated into the stem–stake coupling device to identify the optimal coupling point and automate the coupling task. This innovation addresses the labor-intensive task of manual coupling, offering a scalable solution for growers through handheld devices or fully automated robotic systems. In the context of increasing labor shortages and rising costs, the technology offers a sustainable and efficient alternative with significant potential to enhance operational efficiency in greenhouses and propagation facilities. © 2023 IEEE.

Job-shop scheduling is an important but difficult combinatorial optimization problem for low-volume and high-variety manufacturing, with solutions required to be obtained quickly at the beginning of each shift. In view of the increasing demand for customized products, problem sizes are growing. A promising direction is to take advantage of Machine Learning (ML). Direct learning to predict solutions for job-shop scheduling, however, suffers from major difficulties when problem scales are large. In this paper, a Deep Neural Network (DNN) is synergistically integrated within the decomposition and coordination framework of Surrogate Lagrangian Relaxation (SLR) to predict good-enough solutions for subproblems. Since a subproblem is associated with a single part, learning difficulties caused by large scales are overcome. Nevertheless, the learning still presents challenges. Because of the high-variety nature of parts, the DNN is desired to be able to generalize to solve all possible parts. To this end, our idea is to establish 'surrogate' part subproblems that are easier to learn, develop a DNN based on Pointer Network to learn to predict their solutions, and calculate the solutions of the original part subproblems based on the predictions. Moreover, a masking mechanism is developed such that all the predictions are feasible. Numerical results demonstrate that good-enough subproblem solutions are predicted in many iterations, and high-quality solutions of the overall problem are obtained in a computationally efficient manner. The performance of the method is further improved through continuous learning. Note to Practitioners - Scheduling is important for the planning and operation of job shops, and high-quality schedules need to be obtained quickly at the beginning of each shift. Information theory, coding theory, and signal processing have significantly shaped magnetic read/write channels engineering through a chronological sequence of innovations and research advancements, cognizant of the underlying physical processes. In this magazine article, we provide an overview of magnetic recording technologies leading to the channels engineering aspects, central to this article. We survey important coding and signal processing algorithms along with some design architectures that have made it to practice within hard disk drives for magnetic recording channels. The push toward realizing ultrahigh densities (> 4 Tb/in2>) on magnetic disks with ultrahigh throughput rates (>10 Gb /s) necessitates the development of native two-dimensional (2-D) coding and signal processing algorithms and architectures within the framework of 2-D magnetic recording (TDMR) along with read head engineering and changes to the recording physics. We also provide an overview of novel channels engineering solutions covering all aspects of TDMR channels driven from a systems science perspective. The innovations and research advances described in this article may serve a broad engineering audience in other areas as well. © 2021 IEEE.

Using Metaheuristic OFA Algorithm for Service Placement in Fog Computing

The use of fog computing in the Internet of Things(IoT)has emerged as a crucial solution,bringing cloud services closer to end users to process large amounts of data generated within the *** its advantages,the increasing task demands from IoT objects often overload fog devices with limited resources,resulting in system delays,high network usage,and increased energy *** of the major challenges in fog computing for IoT applications is the efficient deployment of services between fog *** address this challenge,we propose a novel Optimal Foraging Algorithm(OFA)for task placement on appropriate fog devices,taking into account the limited resources of each fog *** OFA algorithm optimizes task sharing between fog devices by evaluating incoming task requests based on their types and allocating the services to the most suitable fog *** our study,we compare the performance of the OFA algorithm with two other popular algorithms:Genetic Algorithm(GA)and Randomized Search Algorithm(RA).Through extensive simulation experiments,our findings demonstrate significant improvements achieved by the OFA ***,it leads to up to 39.06%reduction in energy consumption for the Elektroensefalografi(EEG)application,up to 25.86%decrease in CPU utilization for the Intelligent surveillance through distributed camera networks(DCNS)application,up to 57.94%reduction in network utilization,and up to 23.83%improvement in runtime,outperforming other *** a result,the proposed OFA algorithm enhances the system’s efficiency by effectively allocating incoming task requests to the appropriate fog devices,mitigating the challenges posed by resource limitations and contributing to a more optimized IoT ecosystem.

This paper presents a novel design technique for reducing ripple in various sensor read-out integrated circuits (IC) by calibrating the amplifier offset through current control in bias resistors. Traditional methods for reducing ripple often involve complex amplifiers consuming static power. In contrast, the proposed ripple reduction technique employs successive-approximation register (SAR) logic to control the current flowing through the bias resistor, thus minimizing static power consumption. Experimental results obtained through simulations in a 28 nm CMOS process demonstrate significant ripple reduction to 8.94 μVpp from 2 mVpp. This approach is suitable for low-power design, particularly in wearable device applications, and can potentially extend to other amplifier configurations utilizing chopping technique. © 2024 IEEE.
