Practical aberration correction using deep transfer learning with limited experimental data

Adaptive optics is a technique for correcting aberrations and improving image quality. When adaptive optics was first used in microscopy, it was common to rely on iterative approaches to determine the aberrations present. It is advantageous to avoid iteration, and therefore there has been a shift to deep learning for aberration prediction. However, issues remain regarding the practicalities of machine learning for adaptive optics, an important one being the requirement for a large training dataset. Here, we explore transfer learning to overcome this need for data by pre-training a network on a large simulated dataset and fine-tuning it with reduced experimental data for application in an experimental setting. We demonstrate that the pre-trained network can make noticeable improvements with fine-tuning on just 24 experimental samples. To further enhance practicality, we significantly extend the range of aberrations present, predicting up to 25 Zernike modes with each coefficient ranging from −1 to 1, and perform a thorough analysis of the type and magnitude of phase-diversity required in the input data for a successful network. Our approach demonstrates substantial aberration reduction on experimental data for 10 Zernike modes, with an average 73% decrease in RMS wavefront error from 1.81 to 0.48 rad when correction is applied. This method achieves complete experimental image capture and aberration inference at rates comparable to the image acquisition time of a typical laser scanning microscope. Additionally, we consider the benefits of further improvements via an iterative step. As such, this work addresses some of the key practical hurdles that remain in the use of deep learning for aberration prediction and correction. © 2025 Optica Publishing group (formerly OSA). Thermal-aware routing protocols in WBANs consider temperature factors in the routing process for preventing overheating of the tissues surrounding the sensor ***,providing an energy-efficient and thermal-aware routing in WBANs is a challenging *** deal with this problem,this article presents a novel temperature-aware routing protocol that applies Mamdani-based Fuzzy Logic Controllers(FLCs)for selecting the next forwarding node in routing data *** FLCs apply five important input factors such as the priority of the packet,and sensor node's remaining energy,temperature,distance,and link path ***,a new hybrid version of the Marine Predator Algorithm(MPA),named MPAOA is presented by combining the exploration and exploitation phases of the MPA and Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm(AOA).This algorithm is effectively applied for selecting the best possible set of fuzzy rules for FLCs and tuning their fuzzy *** experiments conducted in the Castalia simulator exhibit that the proposed temperature and priority-aware routing scheme can outperform other well-known routing schemes such as LATOR,TTRP,TAEO,ATAR,and EOCC-TARA in terms of metrics such as sensor nodes lifetime,the average temperature of the sensor nodes,and the percentage of the packets routed through non-overheated ***,it is shown that the MPAOA outperforms other algorithms such as Bat Algorithm(BA),Genetic Algorithm(GA),AOA,and MPA regarding the specified metrics.

This work presents an analysis of the power con-sumption of different radix implementations of Montgomery multiplication (MM). Different MM architectures are discussed and a new modified architecture for the radix-2 processing element (PE), where conversion from carry save representation to conventional representation is accomplished without using a Carry Propagate Adder (CPA) is presented in this paper. The proposed radix-2 architecture also eliminates race conditions by avoiding incorrect data selection of the multiplier bit by a processing element, by using a register. Also, the overall architectural power consumption is reduced by applying the clock gating technique to the proposed radix-2 architecture and also the high radix architecture used in this paper. Power, Performance, and Area (PPA) analysis is performed using TSMC 28hpc+ 28 nm to understand the trade-off requirements between the implementations. The results indicate that radix-2 architecture occupies lower area compared to high radix i.e. radix-16 and radix-2 16 implementations but the high radix architectures take less number of clock cycles than the radix-2 architecture.

A Proof of Concept Resource Management Scheme for Augmented Reality Applications in 5G systems

Augmented reality applications are bitrate intensive, delay-sensitive, and computationally demanding. To support them, mobile edge computing systems need to carefully manage both their networking and computing resources. To this end, we present a proof of concept resource management scheme that adapts the bandwidth at the base station and the GPU frequency at the edge to efficiently fulfill roundtrip delay constrains. Resource adaptation is performed using a Multi-Armed Bandit algorithm that accounts for the monotonic relationship between allocated resources and performance. We evaluate our scheme by experimentation on an OpenAirInterface 5G testbed where the considered application is OpenRTiST. The results indicate that our resource management scheme can substantially reduce both bandwidth usage and power consumption while delivering high quality of service. Overall, this work demonstrates that intelligent resource control can potentially establish systems that are not only more efficient but also more sustainable. © 2025, CC BY.

Muscular Dystrophy (MD) is a group of inherited muscular diseases that are commonly diagnosed with the help of techniques such asmuscle biopsy, clinical presentation, and Muscle Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI). Among these techniques, Muscle MRI recommends the diagnosis ofmuscular dystrophy through identification of the patterns that exist in musclefatty replacement. But the patterns overlap among various diseases whereasthere is a lack of knowledge prevalent with regards to disease-specific ***, artificial intelligence techniques can be used in the diagnosis ofmuscular dystrophies, which enables us to analyze, learn, and predict forthe future. In this scenario, the current research article presents an automated muscular dystrophy detection and classification model using SynergicDeep Learning (SDL) method with extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost),called SDL-XGBoost. SDL-XGBoost model has been proposed to act as anautomated deep learning (DL) model that examines the muscle MRI dataand diagnose muscular dystrophies. SDL-XGBoost model employs Kapur’sentropy based Region of Interest (RoI) for detection purposes. Besides, SDLbased feature extraction process is applied to derive a useful set of featurevectors. Finally, XGBoost model is employed as a classification approach todetermine proper class labels for muscle MRI data. The researcher conductedextensive set of simulations to showcase the superior performance of SDLXGBoost model. The obtained experimental values highlighted the supremacyof SDL-XGBoost model over other methods in terms of high accuracy being96.18% and 94.25% classification performance upon DMD and BMD respectively. Therefore, SDL-XGBoost model can help physicians in the diagnosis of muscular dystrophies by identifying the patterns of muscle fatty replacementin muscle MRI.

A large-scale dynamically weighted directed network(DWDN)involving numerous entities and massive dynamic interaction is an essential data source in many big-data-related applications,like in a terminal interaction pattern analysis system(TIPAS).It can be represented by a high-dimensional and incomplete(HDI)tensor whose entries are mostly *** such an HDI tensor contains a wealth knowledge regarding various desired patterns like potential links in a DWDN.A latent factorization-of-tensors(LFT)model proves to be highly efficient in extracting such knowledge from an HDI tensor,which is commonly achieved via a stochastic gradient descent(SGD)***,an SGD-based LFT model suffers from slow convergence that impairs its efficiency on large-scale *** address this issue,this work proposes a proportional-integralderivative(PID)-incorporated LFT *** constructs an adjusted instance error based on the PID control principle,and then substitutes it into an SGD solver to improve the convergence *** studies on two DWDNs generated by a real TIPAS show that compared with state-of-the-art models,the proposed model achieves significant efficiency gain as well as highly competitive prediction accuracy when handling the task of missing link prediction for a given DWDN.

This work concerns automation of the training process, using modern information technologies, including virtual reality (VR). The starting point is an observation that automotive and aerospace industries require effective methods of preparation of engineering personnel. In this context, the technological process of preparing operations of a CNC numerical machine has been extracted. On this basis, a dedicated virtual reality environment, simulating manufacturing of a selected aircraft landing gear component, was created. For a comprehensive analysis of the pros and cons of the proposed approach, four forms of training, involving a physical CNC machine, a physical simulator, a software simulator, and the developed VR environment were instantiated. The features of each training form were analysed in terms of their potential for industrial applications. A survey, using the Net Promoter Score method, was also conducted among a target group of engineers, regarding the potential of use of each training form. As a result, the advantages and disadvantages of all four training forms were captured. Visible light communication(VLC),which is a prominent emerging solution that complements the radio frequency(RF)technology,exhibits the potential to meet the demands of fifth-generation(5G)and beyond *** random movement of mobile terminals in the indoor environment is a challenge in the VLC *** model of optical attocells has a critical role in the uniform distribution and the quality of communication links in terms of received power and signal-to-noise ratio(SNR).As such,the optical attocells positions were optimized in this study with a developed try and error(TE)*** optimized optical attocells were examined and compared with previous *** novel approach had successfully increased minimum received power from−1.29 to−0.225 dBm,along with enhanced SNR performance by 2.06 *** bit error rate(BER)was reduced to 4.42×10−8 and 6.63×10−14 by utilizing OOK-NRZ and BPSK modulation techniques,*** optimized attocells positions displayed better uniform distribution,as both received power and SNR performances improved by 0.45 and 0.026,*** the results of the proposed model are optimal,it is suitable for standard office and room model applications.

Visible light communication(VLC)has a paramount role in industrial implementations,especially for better energy efficiency,high speed-data rates,and low susceptibility to ***,since studies on VLC for industrial implementations are in scarcity,areas concerning illumination optimisation and communication performances demand further *** such,this paper presents a new modelling of light fixture distribution for a warehouse model to provide acceptable illumination and communication *** proposed model was evaluated based on various semi-angles at half power(SAAHP)and different height levels for several parameters,including received power,signal to noise ratio(SNR),and bit error rate(BER).The results revealed improvement in terms of received power and SNR with 30 Mbps data *** modulations were studied to improve the link quality,whereby better average BER values of 5.55×10^(−15) and 1.06×10^(−10) had been achieved with 4 PAM and 8 PPM,*** simulation outcomes are indeed viable for the practical warehouse model.
