This article presents a nonlinear dynamic inversion-based motion plan for a levitating robotic satellite emulation platform. The frictionless motion of such a levitating platform has dynamic equivalency with a satellite’s realistic movement in space, thus evolving as an efficient demonstration tool as a hardware-in-loop satellite motion simulator. A brief design description of the emulation platform unified with various sensor and actuator units is presented, and an associated nonlinear mathematical model representing its coupled dynamic motion is described. The proposed control design architecture manipulates the associated nonlinear dynamics, which appear due to the coupling of translational and rotational movement of the robotic platform, thereby establishing an efficient trajectory tracking capability for various operating regions without the additional requirement of gain scheduling. In order to realize the control requirement through a set of ON-OFF thruster-based actuation units, which closely resembles the reaction control system of realistic satellite design, an optimal thrust allocation logic is proposed that accounts for various physical limitations of thrusters such as thrusters as its magnitude constraint and minimum on time. The efficacy of the proposed modelling and control scheme is experimentally validated in different realistic motion planning scenarios, such as point-to-point manoeuvres with terminal objectives and a superior path-following capability. Demand-side flexibility from renewable energy community members increases the benefits of local production and exchanges. To effectively harness this flexibility, end-users must be rewarded for their efforts regarding the shifted energy volumes and the associated discomfort. This work quantifies these last two quantities for three types of loads (electric vehicles, thermal loads and wet appliances). Then, a two-step model is proposed which first optimally activates the offered flexibility and then shares the benefits of this activation among the renewable energy community members through a rule-based or an optimization-based approach. Results show that the community framework can further increase the benefits brought by flexible demand. © 2024 IEEE.

Cancers have emerged as a significant concern due to their impact on public health and society. The examination and interpretation of tissue sections stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) play a crucial role in disease assessment, particularly in cases like gastric cancer. Microsatellite instability (MSI) is suggested to contribute to the carcinogenesis of specific gastrointestinal tumors. However, due to the nonspecific morphology observed in H&E-stained tissue sections, MSI determination often requires costly evaluations through various molecular studies and immunohistochemistry methods in specialized molecular pathology laboratories. Despite the high cost, international guidelines recommend MSI testing for gastrointestinal cancers. Thus, there is a pressing need for a new diagnostic modality with lower costs and widespread applicability for MSI detection. This study aims to detect MSI directly from H&E histology slides in gastric cancer, providing a cost-effective alternative. The performance of well-known deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) and a proposed architecture are compared. Medical image datasets are typically smaller than benchmark datasets like ImageNet, necessitating the use of off-the-shelf DCNN architectures developed for large datasets through techniques such as transfer learning. Designing an architecture proportional to a custom dataset can be tedious and may not yield desirable results. In this work, we propose an automatic method to extract a lightweight and efficient architecture from a given heavy architecture (e.g., well-known off-the-shelf DCNNs) proportional to a specific dataset. To predict MSI instability, we extracted the MicroNet architecture from the Xception network using the proposed method and compared its performance with other well-known architectures. This paper introduces a novel, computationally efficient, random-search based path-planning algorithm specifically designed to enhance the dexterous accessibility of autonomous lunar rovers operating on highly cluttered obstacle-dense planetary surfaces. The proposed pathplanning framework employs a Quadtree-based cell decomposition to enhance the performance of sampling-based path-planning algorithms, specifically those in the category of Rapidlyexploring Random Trees (RRT) and its optimized variant, RRT*. In the process of generating the path through an occupancy grid map, the obstacle-free cells are utilized as discrete sampling points for the RRT* algorithm. A unique non-uniform sampling approach is employed to favour larger cells with a higher degree of safety, thereby enabling seamless navigation through the obstacle-dense map. Additionally, the non-uniform sampling approach enhances the overall computational efficiency of the framework, making it suitable for fast, lightweight onboard implementation. Multi-channel CNN to classify Nepali COVID-19 related tweets using hybrid features

Because of the current COVID-19 pandemic’s increasing fears among people, it has triggered several health complications such as depression and anxiety. Such complications have not only affected developed countries but also developing countries such as Nepal. These complications can be understood from peoples’ tweets and comments posted online after their felicitous analysis and sentiment classification. Nevertheless, owing to the limited number of tokens and words in each tweet, it is crucial to capture multiple pieces of information associated with them for better understanding. In this study, we, first, represent each tweet by combining both syntactic and semantic information, called hybrid features. The syntactic information is generated from the bag-of-words method, whereas the semantic information is generated from the combination of the fastText-based (ft) and domain-specific (ds) methods. Second, we design a novel multi-channel CNN (MCNN) model, which ensembles the multiple CNNs, to capture multi-scale information for better classification. Last, we evaluate the efficacy of both the proposed feature extraction method and the MCNN model classifying tweets into three sentiment classes (positive, neutral, and negative) on the NepCOV19Tweets dataset, which is the only public COVID-19 tweets dataset in the Nepali language. The evaluation results show that the proposed hybrid features outperform individual feature extraction methods with the highest classification accuracy of 69.7% and the MCNN model outperforms the existing methods with the highest classification accuracy of 71.3% during classification. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2023.

The rapid expansion of extended electric vehicle (xEV) adoption necessitates optimizing energy storage systems (ESS) management for enhanced performance, longevity, and reliability. However, traditional ESS management approaches struggle with real-time state estimation, energy optimization, and predictive maintenance, leading to inefficiencies in battery utilization and sustainability. This paper addresses these challenges by proposing an advanced ESS framework that integrates digital twin (DT) technology with the twin-delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3) algorithm, a state-of-the-art reinforcement learning method derived from the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG). This integration enables precise real-time estimation of critical ESS states, including state of charge (SoC), state of health (SoH), state of energy (SoE), and remaining useful life (RUL), thereby enhancing predictive maintenance and operational efficiency. The proposed framework facilitates proactive battery health monitoring, generates early warnings for potential failures, and enables intelligent battery swapping via DT-driven ESS control. By dynamically adapting ESS control strategies, the TD3 algorithm optimizes energy distribution, reduces energy consumption, and improves overall vehicle performance. With a prediction accuracy of 99.8% for SoC, SoH, and SoE, the proposed approach effectively addresses key challenges in xEV ESS management like cell balancing, dynamic charging rate adjustment, battery swapping decisions, and energy optimization, contributing to a more sustainable and efficient EV ecosystem. © 2013 IEEE.

Conditioned fully convolutional denoising autoencoder for multi-target NILM

Energy management requires reliable tools to support decisions aimed at optimising consumption. Advances in data-driven models provide techniques like Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM), which estimates the energy demand of appliances from total consumption. Common single-target NILM approaches perform energy disaggregation by using separate learned models for each device. However, the use of single-target systems in real scenarios is computationally expensive and can obscure the interpretation of the resulting feedback. This study assesses a conditioned deep neural network built upon a Fully Convolutional Denoising AutoEncoder (FCNdAE) as multi-target NILM model. The network performs multiple disaggregations using a conditioning input that allows the specification of the target appliance. Experiments compare this approach with several single-target and multi-target models using public residential data from households and non-residential data from a hospital facility. Results show that the multi-target FCNdAE model enhances the disaggregation accuracy compared to previous models, particularly in non-residential data, and improves computational efficiency by reducing the number of trainable weights below 2 million and inference time below 0.25 s for several sequence lengths. Furthermore, the conditioning input helps the user to interpret the model and gain insight into its internal behaviour when predicting the energy demand of different appliances. © The Author(s) 2024.

Vehicle traffic accident investigations often depend on eyewitness testimony, which can be unreliable, especially in remote areas where no closed circuit television (CCTV) footage is available. A mobile data logger was developed, equipped with a range of sensors, including an accelerometer and gyroscope, to collect and store data related to vehicle movements. An additional Flutter-driven program was developed to extract and visualize data from the mobile logger, and thus improve the accuracy of accident detection and allow incidents to be rebuilt. These programs were subjected to black-box testing, which produced results consistent with the anticipated outcomes for both the recording and data visualization tests. The data visualization application was subjected to testing using the system usability scale (SUS) technique and obtained a score of 89.5, corresponding to an A grade, the highest possible score of the 5 grade levels. © 2024 IEEE.

Security is one of the biggest challenges, particularly in the Industrial IoT and in critical infrastructures. Complex cryptographic computations are in contrast to the low energy budget of the devices, especially when independence from the power grid is required, as it is the case with retrofitted sensor nodes. Energy harvesting offers a promising alternative but tightens the energy constraints of the application further. In this work, we investigate how IoT edge devices can be powered by thermal energy harvesting and concurrently meet the stringent TLS-based security requirements. We analyze a thermoelectric generator system at its lowest power output region and evaluate different energy storage technologies in a representative IoT architecture. Our results show that temperature gradients as low as 1 K are sufficient to enable secure connections every 20 min in a representative IIoT application. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper develops an adaptive two-stage unscented Kalman filter(ATSUKF)to accurately track operation states of the synchronous generator(SG)under cyber *** achieve high fidelity,considering the excitation system of SGs,a detailed 9~(th)-order SG model for dynamic state estimation is ***,for several common cyber attacks against measurements,a two-stage unscented Kalman filter is proposed to estimate the model state and the bias in ***,to solve the deterioration problem of state estimation performance caused by the mismatch between noise statistical characteristics and model assumptions,a multi-dimensional adaptive factor matrix is derived to modify the noise covariance ***,a large number of simulation experiments are carried out on the IEEE 39-bus system,which shows that the proposed filter can accurately track the SG state under different abnormal test conditions.
