In this paper, we investigate the application of hexagonal quadrature amplitude modulation (HQAM) in reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted networks, specifically focusing on its efficiency in reducing the number of required reflecting elements. Specifically, we present analytical expressions for the average symbol error probability (ASEP) and propose a new metric for conditioned energy efficiency, which assesses the network’s energy consumption while ensuring the ASEP remains below a certain threshold. Additionally, we introduce an innovative detection algorithm for HQAM constellations, which demonstrates a substantial reduction in computational complexity. Finally, our study reveals that HQAM significantly enhances both the ASEP and energy efficiency compared to traditional quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) schemes.

With the ubiquitous and distributed nature of the Internet-of-Things (IoT), various qualities of traditional communication methods for end devices and their verifiers prove insufficient in solving the challenges this new paradigm faces. Many new hardware and software technologies are proposed in an attempt to provide IoT systems with desired security properties while meeting performance requirements. Physically Unclonable Functions (PUFs) are one such technology receiving particular interest from the wider research community by promising to provide low-cost and highly secure key data to enable lightweight authentication protocols for devices operating over publicly accessible networks. PUFs have been the target of Machine Learning Modelling Attacks (ML-MA), which aim to clone the intrinsic behaviour of the PUF to undermine their security. While many PUF-based schemes have been proposed to defend against adversaries who are guaranteed to be dishonest, an area which has not seen significant consideration is one where a normal communication participant cannot always be assumed to act honestly. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first to consider the concept of ‘semi-honest verifier’ for PUFbased authentication, taking initial steps to shed light on this prominent issue in IoT by proposing a privacy-preserving mutual authentication protocol which considers security against MLMA in the presence of such verifiers. Furthermore, this work describes hardware-level considerations for PUF obfuscation by utilising a combination of strong PUF, configurable One-Way Function (OWF) and secure DRAM-PUF and is, therefore, one of the first to integrate PUF obfuscation comprehensively at the protocol level.

We propose a new online identification scheme for discrete-time piece-wise affine models based on a system of adaptive algorithms. A stochastic approximation algorithm based on online deterministic annealing runs at a slow timescale, estimating the partition of the space that defines the modes of the system. At the same time, a recursive identification algorithm, running at a higher timescale, updates the parameters of local identification models based on the estimate of the modes. Convergence results under mild assumptions are given based on the theory of two timescale stochastic approximation. In contrast to standard identification algorithms for piece-wise affine systems, the proposed approach is appropriate for online system identification using sequential data acquisition, and is computationally more efficient compared to standard algebraic, mixed-integer programming, and clustering-based methods. The progressive nature of the algorithm provides real-time control over the performance-complexity trade-off, desired in practical applications. Experimental results validate the efficacy of the proposed methodology.

The use of Transformer represents a recent success in speech enhancement. However, as its core component, self-attention suffers from quadratic complexity, which is computationally prohibited for long speech recordings. Moreover, it allows each time frame to attend to all time frames, neglecting the strong local correlations of speech signals. This study presents a simple yet effective sparse self-attention for speech enhancement, called ripple attention, which simultaneously performs fine- and coarse-grained modeling for local and global dependencies, respectively. Specifically, we employ local band attention to enable each frame to attend to its closest neighbor frames in a window at fine granularity, while employing dilated attention outside the window to model the global dependencies at a coarse granularity. We evaluate the efficacy of our ripple attention for speech enhancement on two commonly used training objectives. Extensive experimental results consistently confirm the superior performance of the ripple attention design over standard full self-attention, blockwise attention, and dual-path attention (Sep-Former) in terms of speech quality and intelligibility. © 2023 IEEE.

A new Multi-Carrier Deep Learning Chaos Shift Keying (MC-DLCSK) modulation is designed in this paper. The proposed receiver includes a Neural Network (NN)-based classifier that recovers MC-DLCSK signals. The results demonstrate that the MC-DLCSK system achieves a considerable Bit Error Rate (BER) gain compared to all existing similar systems under both Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and Rayleigh fading channels. © 1997-2012 IEEE.

Proportional counters filled with hydrogen are suitable for fast neutron detection and spectrometry. As their sensitivity is not limited only to this type of ionizing radiation as desired, an approach suitable for event discrimination was investigated. Several counters of the given construction were subjected to various radiation fields and the effort was directed to the examination of pulse-shape discrimination method intended to distinguish neutrons from gamma rays and parasitic events (microdischarges) if these also occurred. Rising edge duration of the output pulses and their amplitudes were mapped into diagrams enabling visual discrimination while the criteria for further computational processes are to be determined. Pulse waveforms from charge-sensitive preamplifier with the proportional counters connected were recorded using an FPGA-based custom-build acquisition unit and then post-processed. Moreover, the possibility of operation verification and energy calibration based on the introduction of helium-3 admixture into the gas filling was studied, as well as the energy resolution abilities. Also, the theoretical basis for particle discrimination is presented in the form of description of events and principles involved. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

A joint research project 'real-time lightning 3D imaging and forecasting project for sustainable and reliable supply of energy and storm disaster early warning' has been selected for Science and Technology research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) program. Held in the coastal area of the Straits of Malacca in Malaysia, which suffers from serious lightning disasters with more than 200 lightning days per year, this research aims to contribute to disaster prevention by forecasting lightning strikes by constructing the world's highest lightning observation network. This research project is to conduct the field campaigns associated with artificial rocket-triggered lightning in the coastal area of the Straits of Malacca, where the thunderstorm activity is very high and there are many positive cloud-to-ground flashes that may damage electric, communication and other equipments. Measurements of radio waves in various frequency bands and high-energy radiations, and several Rogowski coils are set up surrounding the strike points. It is planned to realize an electromagnetic field observation network in VHF and LF bands to observe the entire progression of each lightning in detail in a wide area. 3D charge distribution in the thundercloud and the amounts of neutralized charges estimated from the information where the lightning discharge begins, how it progresses, and where it terminates. Then, it is examined by the lightning current waveform measured directly with the high structure and rocket-triggered lightning. By comprehensively grasping the charge behavior in the air related to lightning discharge, it is possible to estimate the charge distribution in the cloud and to predict lightning strike. In addition, promoting the control of electric power equipment using IoT, and the early warning system of severe weather disasters to be implemented in the society.
