The power consumption of next-generation high-performance processors is expected to reach and eventually exceed 1000 W, with core logic voltages below 1 V and peak current demand beyond 1000 A. To deliver ultra-high currents at low voltages with minimal power distribution network losses, this paper presents a compact 48-V-to-sub-1-V switching bus converter (SBC), a single-stage hybrid switched-capacitor (SC) voltage regulator for processor vertical power delivery (VPD). The SBC comprises a 2-to-1 SC front-end and two 10-branch series-capacitor buck modules, which are merged through two switching buses. A hardware prototype was designed and built with two-phase coupled inductors for performance validation. The coupled inductors were customized for VPD, with their windings both functioning as part of the coupled inductors and serving as the connection between the SBC and the processor motherboard. The hardware prototype met a stringent maximum height limit of 5 mm and achieved a current density of 0.614 A/mm2 at a full-load current of 600 A. Additionally, it demonstrated excellent performance compared to the state-of-the-art academic works for 48 V to point-of-load conversion. © 2024 IEEE.

In response to growing energy demands and concerns about climate change, microgrid clusters (MGCs) are gaining widespread attention. Their ability to integrate technologies for energy consumption, generation, and storage in AC, DC or a compound of both offer a high degree of flexibility and resiliency. This research introduces a new control strategy for an MGC composed of two MGs interconnected to a local grid via a point of common coupling. The first one is a DC MG comprising an ultracapacitor (UC), wind turbine (WT), DC loads and hydrogen system. The second is an AC MG with a battery bank, AC loads and photovoltaic (PV) generator. The control strategy employs local controllers for each device and distributed control via two control agents, coordinating the power distribution among the energy storage systems (ESSs) of the MGC. This system is tested and validated on a real-time experimental setup, using two Raspberry Pi microcontrollers and an OPAL-RT unit, under different working conditions. The results obtained in this work show that the control strategy implemented in the MGC works correctly. © 2024 IEEE.

We are currently in a period of upheaval, as many new technologies are emerging that open up new possibilities to shape our everyday lives. Particularly, within the field of Personalized Human-computer Interaction we observe high potential, but also challenges. In this article, we explore how an increasing amount of online services and tools not only further facilitates our lives, but also shapes our lives and how we perceive our environments. Intrusion detection has been an active development area due to its importance in highly digitally connected ecosystems. Most of the existing developments have focused on the use of complex machine learning models that are black-box in nature. There is an urgent need to investigate a more transparent model approach for determining the features associated with intrusion detection. In this paper, a feature selection is proposed for a decision tree (DT)-based classifier. In particular, a stochastic optimization technique based on differential evolution (DE) is used to create the DT for optimizing feature selection. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, a white-box machine learning model using DT is implemented. Second, an optimal feature reduction approach is embedded in the process of building the DT. The results demonstrate an improvement over the non-feature selection approach and the black-box neural network and are comparable to other state-of-the-art models. This shows that it is possible to achieve high performance despite using a minimal transparent model by eliminating non-contributing features. This is the essence of Occam’s razor principle, which states that a more condensed model contributes to better generalization. There is an evident improvement in the generalization of the DT model after optimization of features. Despite often being associated with a weaker machine learning model, the results show comparative results on independent datasets, indicating the suitability for such a task. It is worth mentioning that the final model only utilizes a fraction of the full feature set. Although the generalization performance only improved less than 1% in comparison with the non-feature selection counterpart, the proposed approach suggests that a condensed model yielding a similar performing model should be considered. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

The paper proposes a Fuzzy-I controller for optimal load frequency control (LFC) in a two-area interconnected power system. The proposed controller is composed of a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) and an integral (I) controller. To achieve a better dynamic response for the LFC, the integral controller and frequency bias parameters of the secondary loop are tuned using the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique. To boost the efficiency of the optimization, a proposed objective function using the integral of squared error (ISE) and settling time is used. A comparative study and analysis are conducted between the base system controller, optimized I controller, and the proposed controller under three different scenarios of load disturbances. The robustness of the proposed controller is shown by performing a sensitivity analysis for various system parameters and operating conditions. Moreover, the performance of the proposed controller was compared with the previous LFC approaches published in the literature. The simulation outcomes demonstrate that the proposed method has an outstanding performance. The work results are presented as time-domain simulations using MATLAB/SIMULINK tool. © 2023 IEEE.
