Self-information broadcast messages are recurrently send out by vehicular terminals to establish their presence and hence improve situational awareness in road transportation. Importantly, such information snippets could prove invaluable to cloud-based intelligent transportation system services that aim to improve safety, traffic efficiency, and offer a plethora of infotainment services. However, due to the bulk nature of the aggregated load collected by vehicular peers, the delivery of this traffic to the infrastructure proves to be a challenging task. The latter offloading problem is considered in this work, in which each individual vehicular station decides on the offloading strategy that maintains proper utilization of the available infrastructure network. For this purpose, a graph theoretic approach is followed in which stations first estimate the potential of eventually being serviced by an available infrastructure node and then decide on the best offloading strategy that minimizes the load variance between the current and subsequent serving nodes. Performance analysis results illustrate that the proposed solution provides substantial load balancing gains and is computationally efficient to implement in practice for arbitrarily large network instances.

Control system networks are increasingly being connected to enterprise level networks. These connections leave critical industrial controls systems vulnerable to cyber-attacks. Most of the effort in protecting these cyber-physical systems (CPS) from attacks has been in securing the networks using information security techniques. Effort has also been applied to increasing the protection and reliability of the control system against random hardware and software failures. However, the inability of information security techniques to protect against all intrusions means that the control system must be resilient to various signal attacks for which new analysis methods need to be developed. In this paper, sensor signal attacks are analyzed for observer-based controlled systems. The threat surface for sensor signal attacks is subdivided into denial of service, finite energy, and bounded attacks. In particular, the error signals between states of attack free systems and systems subject to these attacks are quantified. Optimal sensor and actuator signal attacks for the finite and infinite horizon linear quadratic (LQ) control in terms of maximizing the corresponding cost functions are computed. The closed-loop systems under optimal signal attacks are provided. Finally, an illustrative numerical example using a power generation network is provided together with distributed LQ controllers.

Large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems can bring substantial improvement in spectral efficiency and/or energy efficiency, due to the excessive degrees-of-freedom and huge array gain. However, large-scale MIMO is expected to deploy lower-cost radio frequency (RF) components, which are particularly prone to hardware impairments. Unfortunately, compensation schemes are not able to remove the impact of hardware impairments completely, such that a certain amount of residual impairments always exists. In this paper, we investigate the impact of residual transmit RF impairments (RTRI) on the spectral and energy efficiency of training-based point-to-point large-scale MIMO systems, and seek to determine the optimal training length and number of antennas which maximize the energy efficiency. We derive deterministic equivalents of the signal-to-noise-and-interference ratio (SINR) with zero-forcing (ZF) receivers, as well as the corresponding spectral and energy efficiency, which are shown to be accurate even for small number of antennas. Through an iterative sequential optimization, we find that the optimal training length of systems with RTRI can be smaller compared to ideal hardware systems in the moderate SNR regime, while larger in the high SNR regime. Moreover, it is observed that RTRI can significantly decrease the optimal number of transmit and receive antennas.

Classification performance with sparse representation is largely affected by the low discriminative power of image features. In this study, we propose a new sparse representation model, namely the Boosted Multifold Sparse Representation (BMSR), to improve the classification performance. By dividing the training set into multiple subsets, sparse representation using one subset is used as a weak classifier. A threefold boosting approach is then designed to combine the multiple weak classifiers to create the final class label. We applied the BMSR method to classify image patches of different interstitial lung disease (ILD) patterns using a publicly available dataset. Promising performance improvement over non-boosted sparse representation is shown.

The feasibility of realizing an all-optical AND gate for 320 Gb/s return-to-zero data by incorporating quantum-dot semiconductor optical amplifiers (QD-SOAs) in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is theoretically investigated and demonstrated. The proposed scheme employs the QD-SOA-based MZI in a confiuration where the QD-SOA in one MZI arm is subject to the first data sequence, the QD-SOA in the other MZI arm receives no such input but is constantly held in the small signal gain regime, and the second data stream is inserted from the common MZI port acting as enabling or disabling signal. Compared to other approaches adopted for the same purpose this implementation is more general, direct, flexible and affordable as only one strong data signal is required to control switching. By conducting numerical simulation the impact of the critical parameters on the Q-factor is thoroughly assessed. The obtained results are interpreted with the help of a complete characterization of the QD-SOA response to an ultrafast data pulse stream. This allows to specify the requirements that the critical parameters must satisfy to achieve acceptable performance. The extracted design rules are technologically realistic and ensure AND operation both with logical correctness and high quality. The outcome of the numerical treatment extends the range of Boolean functions executed with the QD-SOA-MZI module at sub-Tb/s data rates.

Current over-provisioned and multi-tier data centre networks (DCN) deploy rigid control and management platforms, which are not able to accommodate the ever-growing workload driven by the increasing demand of high-performance data centre (DC) and cloud applications. In response to this, the EC FP7 project LIGHTNESS (Low Latency and High Throughput Dynamic Network Infrastructures for High Performance Datacentre Interconnects) is proposing a new flattened optical DCN architecture capable of providing dynamic, programmable, and highly available DCN connectivity services while meeting the requirements of new and emerging DC and cloud applications. LIGHTNESS DCN comprises all-optical switching technologies (Optical Packet Switching (OPS) and Optical Circuit Switching (OCS)) and hybrid Top-of-the-Rack (ToR) switches, controlled and operated by a Software Defined Networking (SDN) based control plane for enhanced programmability of heterogeneous network functions and protocols. Harnessing the power of optics enables DCs to effectively cope with the high-performance applications' demands. The programmability and flexibility provided by the SDN based control plane allow to fully exploit the benefits of the LIGHTNESS multi-technology optical DCN, while provisioning on-demand, dynamic, flexible and highly resilient network services inside DCs. © 2014 IEEE.

Urdu is amongst the five largest languages of the world and enjoys extreme importance by sharing its vocabulary with several other languages of the Indo-Pak. However, there has not been any significant research in the area of Automatic Speech Recognition of Urdu. This paper presents the statistical based classification technique to achieve the task of Automatic Speech Recognition of isolated words in Urdu. For each isolated word, 52 Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients have been extracted and based upon these coefficients;the classification has been achieved using Linear Discriminant Analysis. As a prototype, the system has been trained with audio samples of seven speakers including male/female, native/non-native and speakers with different ages while the testing has been done using audio samples of three speakers. It was determined that majority of words exhibit a percentage error of less than 33%. Words with 100% error were declared to be bad words. The work reported in this paper may serve as a strong baseline for future research work on Urdu ASR, especially for continuous speech recognition of Urdu. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

In this work, a global air vehicle finite element model employing empirically determined cyclic loads is used to assess the viability of energy harvesting piezoelectric devices for supplemental power generation in lightweight uninhabited aircraft systems (UASs) where the "Owl" all-composite ultralight UAS is used as a candidate proof-of-concept platform. The Owl was developed at the Mississippi State University Raspet Flight research Laboratory as part of the U.S. Army Space Missile Defense Command High Performance Materials/Processes (HIPERMAP) Program. In the HIPERMAP flight test program, strain-time histories were recorded at key locations throughout the wing and fuselage. These measured strains were used in the investigation of practical implementation of energy harvesting piezoelectric materials within the Owl UAS with the intent of harvesting electrical power from structural oscillations of the wings during operation. The total power generated was determined from a 80 KIAS 4G pullup maneuver, where piezoelectric patches were simulated in the span-wise direction along the inner surfaces of the upper and lower skins of both wings. The energy harvesting capability of the Owl UAS was insufficient due to the small oscillation frequency and low strain magnitudes of the wing during flight. Nevertheless, such energy harvesting devices remain promising for microscale UASs where power requirements are lower and the oscilation frequency of the wings is higher. © 2014 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. this paper presents a method to improve the rotor mechanical designs of the synchronous reluctance machine (SynRM) without considerable degradation in machine's performance. SynRM have been used in industries due to their unique merits such as fast dynamic response, and low cost. However, taking into account the major requirements of traction applications i.e., high torque and power density, low torque ripple, wide speed range, and high speed operation capability, this machine is still under investigation. Since, proper operation at high speed is a major requirement of the traction motor, the unique geometrical structure of the rotor suggests that its mechanical robustness is a challenge. Thus, prior to the final design, the effect of magnetic and rotational forces on the rotor geometry that are the source of fatigue and harmful deformation at critical points such as tangential and radial ribs need to be analyzed. At low speed, high current demand for maximum torque makes the magnetic forces dominant whereas at high speed, the rotational force dominates the others. In this work, the performance of a SynRM equipped with transversally laminated anisotropic (TLA) rotor with different geometries are investigated and compared while the proposed method is used. It is shown that, although the machine's proper magnetic and mechanical performance is required for an optimal design, these aspects need to be analyzed simultaneously due to their mutual effect.
