This paper introduces a novel methodology for the optimization, analysis and decision support in production systems engineering. The methodology is based on the innovization procedure, originally introduced to unveil new and innovative design principles in engineering design problems. The innovization procedure stretches beyond an optimization task and attempts to discover new design/operational rules/principles relating to decision variables and objectives, so that a deeper understanding of the underlying problem can be obtained. By integrating the concept of innovization with simulation and data mining techniques, a new set of powerful tools can be developed for general systems analysis. The uniqueness of the approach introduced in this paper lies in that decision rules extracted from the multi-objective optimization using data mining are used to modify the original optimization. Hence, faster convergence to the desired solution of the decision-maker can be achieved. In other words, faster convergence and deeper knowledge of the relationships between the key decision variables and objectives can be obtained by interleaving the multi-objective optimization and data mining process. In this paper, such an interleaved approach is illustrated through a set of experiments carried out on a simulation model developed for a real-world production system analysis problem. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

ATLAS has measured two-particle correlations as a function of the relative azimuthal angle, Δϕ, and pseudorapidity, Δη, in s=13 and 2.76 TeV pp collisions at the LHC using charged particles measured in the pseudorapidity interval |η|<2.5. The correlation functions evaluated in different intervals of measured charged-particle multiplicity show a multiplicity-dependent enhancement at Δϕ∼0 that extends over a wide range of Δη, which has been referred to as the “ridge.” Per-trigger-particle yields, Y(Δϕ), are measured over 2<|Δη|<5. For both collision energies, the Y(Δϕ) distribution in all multiplicity intervals is found to be consistent with a linear combination of the per-trigger-particle yields measured in collisions with less than 20 reconstructed tracks, and a constant combinatoric contribution modulated by cos(2Δϕ). The fitted Fourier coefficient, v2,2, exhibits factorization, suggesting that the ridge results from per-event cos(2ϕ) modulation of the single-particle distribution with Fourier coefficients v2. The v2 values are presented as a function of multiplicity and transverse momentum. They are found to be approximately constant as a function of multiplicity and to have a pT dependence similar to that measured in p+Pb and Pb+Pb collisions. The v2 values in the 13 and 2.76 TeV data are consistent within uncertainties. These results suggest that the ridge in pp collisions arises from the same or similar underlying physics as observed in p+Pb collisions, and that the dynamics responsible for the ridge has no strong s dependence.

A new signal processing algorithm is developed for quantifying heel strike (HS) and toe-off (TO) event times solely from measured heel and toe coordinates during overground walking. It is based on a rough estimation of relevant local 3D position signals. An original piecewise linear fitting method is applied to these local signals to accurately identify HS and TO times without the need of using arbitrary experimental coefficients. We validated the proposed method with nine healthy subjects and a total of 322 trials. The extracted temporal gait events were compared to reference data obtained from a force plate. HS and TO times were identified with a temporal accuracy ± precision of 0.3 ms ± 7.1 ms, and -2.8 ms ± 7.2 ms in comparison with reference data defined with a force threshold of 10 N. This algorithm improves the accuracy of the HS and TO detection. Furthermore, it can be used to perform stride-by-stride analysis during overground walking with only recorded heel and toe coordinates.

In this article, we exploit an exponential-type integral representation for the generalized Marcum-Q function Q_v(a,b) (which is valid for any ratio a/b) to unify the performance evaluation of the marginal area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) metric of average energy detectors with diversity reception in a myriad of fading environments (including the η-μ, K-p and a-p generalized fading distributions). This new metric facilitates the comparison of two different energy detectors within a specified detection threshold range and can also be used to compute the total AUC as a special case. Our numerical results also show that the marginal AUC performance of an average energy detector is superior to that of the classical total energy detector with the increasing sample size due to the noise averaging effect. Our new analytical framework also facilitates the investigation of the effects of dissimilar fading parameters and/or signal strengths, diversity order and diversity combining techniques on the marginal AUC performance of energy detectors.

Understanding the regulating mechanism of tumor invasion is of crucial importance for both fundamental cancer research and clinical applications. Previous in vivo experiments have shown that invasive cancer cells dissociate from the primary tumor and invade into the stroma, forming an irregular invasive morphology. Although cell movements involved in tumor invasion are ultimately driven by mechanical forces of cell-cell interactions and tumor-host interactions, how these mechanical properties affect tumor invasion is still poorly understood. In this study, we use a recently developed two-dimensional cellular model to study the effects of mechanical properties on tumor invasion. We study the effects of cell-cell adhesions as well as the degree of degradation and stiffness of extracellular matrix (ECM). Our simulation results show that cell-cell adhesion relationship must be satisfied for tumor invasion. Increased adhesion to ECM and decreased adhesion among tumor cells result in invasive tumor behaviors. When this invasive behavior occurs, ECM plays an important role for both tumor morphology and the shape of invasive cancer cells. Increased stiffness and stronger degree of degradation of ECM promote tumor invasion, generating more aggressive tumor invasive morphologies. It can also generate irregular shape of invasive cancer cells, protruding towards ECM. The capability of our model suggests it a useful tool to study tumor invasion and might be used to propose optimal treatment in clinical applications.

The goal of the work presented here is to influence the overall behaviour of specific animal societies by integrating computational mechatronic devices (robots) into those societies. To do so, these devices should be accepted by the animals aspart of the society and/or as part of the collectively formed environment. For that, we have developed two sets of robotic hardware for integrating into societies of two different animals: zebra fish and young honeybees. We also developed mechanisms to provide feedback from the behaviours of societies for the controllers of the robotic system. Two different computational methods are then used as the controllers of the robots in simulation and successfully adapted by evolutionary algorithms to influence the simulated animals for desired behaviours. Together, these advances in mechatronic hardware, feedback mechanisms, and controller methodology are laying essential foundations to facilitate experiments on modulating self-organised behaviour in mixed animal -- robot societies.

In this paper, a visible light communication (VLC)-based indoor positioning system (IPS) employing a dedicated algorithm and using the dual-tone multi-frequency technique is proposed. Unlike the time-division multiplexing based VLC-IPS, the proposed positioning system doesn't require synchronization between the transmitter and receiver, which makes it a simple, robust and cost effective. To test the accuracy of the proposed method, an experimental test-bed using 3 white light-emitting diodes and a photomultiplier tube is developed. The results show that the proposed VLC-IPS is highly accurate with an average positioning error of about 1.6cm, which far lower than many existing indoor position systems.

Over the recent years, the problem of video location estimation (i.e., estimating the longitude/latitude coordinates of a video without GPS information) has been approached with diverse methods and ideas in the research community and significant improvements have been made. So far, however, systems have only been compared against each other and no systematic study on human performance has been conducted. Based on a human-subject study with 11,900 experiments, this article presents a human baseline for location estimation for different combinations of modalities (audio, audio/video, audio/video/text). Furthermore, this article compares state-of-the-art location estimation systems with the human baseline. Although the overall performance of humans' multimodal video location estimation is better than current machine learning approaches, the difference is quite small: For 41% of the test set, the machine's accuracy was superior to the humans. We present case studies and discuss why machines did better for some videos and not for others. Our analysis suggests new directions and priorities for future work on the improvement of location inference algorithms. Copyright © 2013 ACM.

This article describes a novel fusion approach using multiple modalities and knowledge sources that improves the accuracy of multimodal location estimation algorithms. The problem of "multimodal location estimation" or "placing" involves associating geo-locations with consumer-produced nmultimedia data like videos or photos that have not been tagged using GPS. Our algorithm effectively integrates data from the visual and textual modalities with external geographical knowledge bases by building a hierarchical model that combines data-driven and semantic methods to group visual and textual features together within geographical regions. We evaluate our algorithm on the MediaEval 2010 Placing Task dataset and show that our system significantly outperforms other state-of-the-art approaches, successfully locating about 40% of the videos to within a radius of 100 m. © 2013 ACM.

Jodi Forlizzi, an associate professor of design and human-computer interaction at Carnegie Mellon University, confesses that she never wanted to become a designer, but the thought of creating products and services for elderly people that would give them an easier way of interacting made her do so. As a designer, she collected and coded data, drawing out perceptions, attitudes, beliefs, and new product opportunities. She placed motion sensor cameras in people's kitchens, in their bathrooms, and in the aisles of grocery and convenience stores. The work of balancing a mix of expertise, background, gender, and cultural makeup on a team was exhausting. Now, she feels that human-centric designing is a profession that requires people to be highly visual, intuitive, unbiased, and open to experiencing people. In addition, it requires people to be able to take actions that support the needs of those whose lives they are trying to improve.
