A new region detection approach for GIS system has been proposed to detect the roads in image. After extraction of road parts from the other parts of image, binarized road features are mined and then used to get a single line road features by thinning. The pruning of the extra unrelated branches and linking of the related branches have been done using Bottom-Top Nega-Max Formulation and Gradient Circum-circle Based Linking. Our proposed method shows high accuracy in detecting roads from satellite images. We have proved by experiment and analysis that proposed method of road extraction is best suited to deal with an average of 95.6% accuracy.

In this paper, the application of wide area measurement and control for voltage assessment of hybrid AC/DC smart grid is investigated. The power available from renewable energy assets and storage elements on the microgrids is utilized to maintain system voltage stability. The system under study consists of two DC microgrids coupled to a multi-bus AC system. The supervisory controller of each of the two microgrids continuously communicates with the main controller of the AC grid, sending the available amount of apparent power and receiving power commands. The AC grid is monitored and controlled using a wide area measurement system in which measurements of the different nodes in the system are synchronized to a unified pulse signal. In case of voltage violation at any of the buses, the minimum reactive power needed from each of the micrgrids in order to restore the voltage magnitude to a value that is between the permissible limits is determined in real time by solving an optimization problem. Simulation, as well as experimental, results are included to verify the validity of the proposed wide area control technique.

The evacuation simulation tool EkuSim based on a hierarchical path finding algorithm is presented. The tile-based algorithm allows pre-processing of the simulation model to increase the speed of the simulation. It can also be used for parallel computation. For evacuation scenarios, entities follow certain rules to describe a realistic panic behavior. The entities try to find emergency exits by avoiding drawbacks like seats or walls. Using a Graphical User Interface (GUI), an evacuation scenario can easily be built and the simulated results displayed. As example of an application is the illustration of evacuation scenarios in an aircraft using realistic layouts The tile-based hierarchical pathfinding algorithm can result in increased processing speed compared to the well-established algorithms, depending on the simulation problem. Simulating the evacuation of an aircraft shows that a uniform spatial distribution failing of emergency doors has only a small influence on evacuation time.

In this invited paper we review the progress on all-optical gates that exploit quantum-dot semiconductor optical amplifiers (QD-SOAs) as nonlinear elements. In particular we focus on our research conducted in this cutting-edge technological field, which relies on QD-SOAs incorporated in a Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI). We present results on an extensive set of Boolean operations executed in the optical domain by properly configuring and driving the QD-SOA-based MZI. We address the feasibility of these logic gates and we give guidelines for their design so that they can be realized with logical correctness and high performance. Finally we report on some characteristic applications of enhanced functionality where these fundamental gates are employed as core logic units to form complex all-optical circuits.

A set of m terminals, observing correlated signals, communicate interactively to generate common randomness for a given subset of them. Knowing only the communication, how many direct queries of the value of the common randomness will resolve it? A general upper bound, valid for arbitrary signal alphabets, is developed for the number of such queries by using a query strategy that applies to all common randomness and associated communication. When the underlying signals are independent and identically distributed repetitions of m correlated random variables, the number of queries can be exponential in signal length. For this case, the mentioned upper bound is tight and leads to a single-letter formula for the largest query exponent, which coincides with the secret key capacity of a corresponding multiterminal source model. In fact, the upper bound constitutes a strong converse for the optimum query exponent, and implies also a new strong converse for secret key capacity. A key tool, estimating the size of a large probability set in terms of Rényi entropy, is interpreted separately, too, as a lossless block coding result for general sources. As a particularization, it yields the classic result for a discrete memoryless source.

The Support Action, T-AREA-SoS has been initiated by the European Commission to develop a research agenda in systems of systems (SoS) that will inform future investment in this area. Through an extensive consultation and review, a number of SoS capability gaps have been identified. Through structuring and subsequent consultation, these have been developed into twelve research themes the detailed areas of which are mapped to the three SoS characteristics of control, evolution, and emergent behaviour. A framework is presented through which researchers can develop a research campaign in SoS.
