Many trust-aware routing algorithms have been proposed in order to reliably deliver data packets from sensor nodes to the base station in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) where there exist inside attackers. In these approaches, a trust mechanism is adopted for each node to measure its neighbors' trustworthiness so the node can send data packets only to the trustworthy neighbors. A false alarm occurs when a good node is considered as untrustworthy. We propose a False Alarm DEtection and Recovery (FADER) technique which enables us to identify and reuse these false alarmed nodes. By doing so, we can improve the performance of the trust-aware routing protocol in terms of many metrics such as the network lifetime, the packet delivery rate, and many routing performance measures. We have conducted extensive OPNET simulations and the results confirm these claimed advantages of our proposed FADER approach over a representative trust-aware routing algorithm. The results show that FADER is able to recover 60-70% of the false alarms without recovering any of the attackers.

We report a novel sensor for ultra-low light detection incorporating a single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) with active circuitry for robust sensing, control, and readout of photon counts in a standard CMOS process. The circuit senses an avalanche event, quenches the avalanche, resets the SPAD voltage bias following a programmable holdoff time, and reports the output signal on a shared communication bus. Two novel aspects of the circuit are the method of holdoff time generation and the introduction of an output interface. The holdoff time is implemented using discrete summation of an oscillatory signal onto a capacitive node, and it achieves linear increments with highly adjustable granularity. The onset of the output signal is simultaneous with the local quenching mechanism, with adjustable pulse width for system-level readout flexibility.

This paper presents the design of a methodology for distributed detection and isolation of multiple sensor faults in heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. The proposed methodology is developed in a distributed framework with the HVAC system modeled as a set of interconnected, nonlinear subsystems. A local sensor fault diagnosis (LSFD) agent is designed for each of the interconnected subsystems. The LSFD agent uses input and sensor output data of its underlying subsystem and it may exchange information with the neighboring agents. The distributed sensor fault detection is conducted using robust analytical redundancy relations, formulated by estimation-based residuals and adaptive thresholds. The distributed sensor fault isolation is carried out by combining the decisions of the LSFD agents and applying a reasoning-based decision logic. Simulation results are used for illustrating the effectiveness of the proposed methodology applied to a two-zone HVAC system.

We identify a new observability concept, called relative observability, in supervisory control of discrete-event systems under partial observation. A fixed, ambient language is given, relative to which observability is tested. Relative observability is stronger than observability, but enjoys the important property that it is preserved under set union;hence there exists the supremal relatively observable sublanguage of a given language. Relative observability is weaker than normality, and thus yields, when combined with controllability, a generally larger controlled behavior;in particular, no constraint is imposed that only observable controllable events may be disabled. We present algorithms which compute the supremal relatively observable (and controllable) sublanguage of a given language, which is generally larger than the normal counterparts. We demonstrate the new observability concept and algorithms with a Guideway example.

Statistical approach with surrounding context around a space was widely used as a main feature for Thai sentence-breaking. However, it does not represent a contextual behaviour regarding an entire context in a sentence. Moreover, it does not take an advantage of Thai grammar rules to determine a sentence boundary. This paper proposes the use of a hybrid approach integrating between rule-based method and statistical approach using contextual behaviour features reflecting natural language behaviour for Thai sentence-breaking. The performance of Thai sentence-breaking using a number of words in a chunk, existence of verb, and rules are compared. Experimental results show that using a number of words in a chunk achieves higher accuracy than other features. Moreover, integration of those features and rule-based method achieves better accuracy. The space-correct and false-break scores are 93.54% and 2.99% respectively.

Wordplay generated by letters of its original word being repeated is commonly found in social network texts. Most of the time, wordplay items of this type are ambiguous to machines in language processing tasks such as Text-to-Speech. This paper shows some statistics on the number of letters from 102,586 real social network text items and proposes a set of classification features together with a few classification frameworks to detect repeated-letter wordplay tokens from Thai social network texts, which were tokenized by CRF-based Thai word segmentation. Evaluation on 48,949 text items shows that the proposed method achieves the detection accuracy of 98.45% which is an improvement over simple rule-based and some previously proposed methods.

Quantitative analysis of the dynamics of tiny cellular and subcellular structures in time-lapse cell microscopy sequences requires the development of a reliable multi-target tracking method capable of tracking numerous similar targets in the presence of high levels of noise, high target density, maneuvering motion patterns and intricate interactions. The linear Gaussian jump Markov system probability hypothesis density (LGJMS-PHD) filter is a recent Bayesian tracking filter that is well-suited for this task. However, the existing recursion equations for this filter do not consider a state-dependent transition probability matrix. As required in many biological applications, we propose a new closed-form recursion that incorporates this assumption and introduce a general framework for particle tracking using the proposed filter. We apply our scheme to multi-target tracking in total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy (TIRFM) sequences and evaluate the performance of our filter against the existing LGJMS-PHD and IMM-JPDA filters. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

A new region detection approach for GIS system has been proposed to detect the roads in image. After extraction of road parts from the other parts of image, binarized road features are mined and then used to get a single line road features by thinning. The pruning of the extra unrelated branches and linking of the related branches have been done using Bottom-Top Nega-Max Formulation and Gradient Circum-circle Based Linking. Our proposed method shows high accuracy in detecting roads from satellite images. We have proved by experiment and analysis that proposed method of road extraction is best suited to deal with an average of 95.6% accuracy.
