Monash Vision group is developing a bionic eye based on implanting 7-11 small tiles into the visual cortex. Each tile has 43 active electrodes on its base, and a wirelessly powered electronic system to decode control signals and drive the electrodes with biphasic pulses. The tiles are fed with power and data using a common transmitting coil at the back of the patient's head. Sophisticated image processing, described in a companion paper, ensures that the user experiences maximum benefit from the small number of electrodes. This paper describes the progress in the first three years (2010-2012) of this four-year project.

One common problem associated with interconnected power systems is that the complete topology information and measurement data of the areas are not generally available or difficult to handle in real-time. This paper proposes a methodology to determine in real-time the reduced networks for the systems external to a given area. A sensitivity-based methodology is proposed to identify the nodes to be retained from the external areas. A network reduction methodology is then used to obtain the reduced equivalent for the entire system. A real-time network parameter adjustment algorithm is subsequently used to update the parameters of the reduced network under changes in operating condition. The proposed methods are validated with the help of the modified IEEE 14-bus and IEEE 118-bus systems.

Mobile communication, radio and television towers, satellites orbiting earth and even the cellular phones are continuously transmitting Radio Frequency waves. This immense amount of energy source around us is un-utilized and with the use of appropriate technology it could be utilized to power up small standalone applications. This research investigation studies the field intensity radiation pattern in a few areas for harvesting the radio frequency waves to power micro-watt level applications. The antenna pattern design choice, the energy harvester design, the implementation and test results are presented. Dipole, isotropic and spiral antennas are used to scavenge the power and comparison of harvested power is displayed in different locations at the coastal belt from Galle to Colombo in Sri Lanka. Among the three tested antennas, isotropic antenna is identified as the best antenna for energy harvesting in the Sri Lankan perspective. The practical application based on the designed harvester system is presented.

With increasing ownership of smartphones and membership of various social network services (SNS), new types of Advanced Traveler Information systems (ATIS) has become available to travelers. The smartphone enables mobile users to input and access real-time information while SNSs provide voluntarily collected personal information among networks of friends. Internet of Things (IoT) philosophy can be applied for connecting smartphone users for various transportation applications. This paper develops Facebook-based carpooling, and proposes Twitter-based traffic monitoring and Flickr-based incident reporting applications. The SNS services provide application programming interfaces (APIs) that allow external users to access their databases. The APIs provide a basis for the development of transportation applications for each service. Facebook can allow a group of friends to share a ride based on their attributes which are available in their personal information sections. Twitter can be used for sharing traffic conditions on the roads. Flickr can be customized as a geo-tagged collision reporting tool with real-time close-up photos of traffic collisions. It is found that available APIs are useful for implementing SNS-based transportation applications. It is also found that search times for carpooling partners vary with multiple factors: time-of-day, number of potential partners, and desired tolerance levels for location and time. © 2013 Infonomics Society.

Gene expression data have been analyzing by many researchers by using a range of computational intelligence methods. From the gene expression data, selecting a small subset of informative genes can do cancer classification. Nevertheless, many of the computational methods face difficulties in selecting small subset since the small number of samples needs to be compared to the huge number of genes (high-dimension), irrelevant genes and noisy genes. Hence, to choose the small subset of informative genes that is significant for the cancer classification, an enhanced binary particle swarm optimization is proposed. Here, the constraint of the elements of particle velocity vectors is introduced and a rule for updating particle's position is proposed. Experiments were performed on five different gene expression data. As a result, in terms of classification accuracy and the number of selected genes, the performance of the introduced method is superior compared to the conventional version of binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO). The other significant finding is lower running times compared to BPSO for this proposed method. © Springer-Verlag 2013.

This paper describes the modelling and control of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC). Fuel cells are expected to play an important role in both stationary and mobile applications. Generally, during fuel cell stacks operation, the hydrogen flow is maintained constant and is imposed by required maximum current. This could result in fuel stagnation. To ovoid this problem, this paper proposes a dynamic control of hydrogen and oxygen flows to improve the PEMFC efficiency. The dynamic model of the PEMFC system and the control of the DC/DC converter using proportionalintegral (PI) are presented. A proportional Integral (PI) regulator is designed in the aim to control the current which should be provided by the fuel cell. Then, a method to calculate the fuel flow is presented using another proportional-Integral (PI). This strategy permits to avoid a fuel cell reactants starvation or the waste of the fuel flow. The effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is validated by theoretical analysis and simulation using Matlab/Simulink software. © 2013 IEEE.

Typical blur from camera shake often deviates from the standard uniform convo-lutional assumption, in part because of problematic rotations which create greater blurring away from some unknown center point. Consequently, successful blind deconvolution for removing shake artifacts requires the estimation of a spatially-varying or non-uniform blur operator. Using ideas from Bayesian inference and convex analysis, this paper derives a simple non-uniform blind deblurring algorithm with a spatially-adaptive image penalty. Through an implicit normalization process, this penalty automatically adjust its shape based on the estimated degree of local blur and image structure such that regions with large blur or few prominent edges are discounted. Remaining regions with modest blur and revealing edges therefore dominate on average without explicitly incorporating structure-selection heuristics. The algorithm can be implemented using an optimization strategy that is virtually tuning-parameter free and simpler than existing methods, and likely can be applied in other settings such as dictionary learning. Detailed theoretical analysis and empirical comparisons on real images serve as validation.

Detecting moving features relative to ground in the images of a moving camera is important for mobile robot localization in practice. This problem is particularly difficult if the initial conditions of the camera are unknown. In this paper, we propose a moving feature detection method by using a calibrated IMU-camera in a dynamic environment. The proposed method is able to separate static and dynamic features without knowing the IMU-camera initial conditions, as well as the gravity direction. In the method, an estimator initialization algorithm is implemented first to estimate the moving velocity and 3D positions of the feature points, and the gravity direction. Then, a recursive moving object detection algorithm is designed to classify the static and dynamic features based on feature re-projection. The simulation results show that the moving features can be grouped effectively, and the remaining static feature points can be used for camera pose and velocity estimation in a real scale to the ground.

The term "Technical Debt" was coined over 20 years ago by Ward Cunningham in a 1992 OOPSLA experience report. Ward used "Technical debt" to describe the trade-offs between delivering the most appropriate - Albeit likely immature - product, in the shortest time possible. Since then, the repercussions of "technical debt" have become more visible, though not necessarily more widely understood.
