This paper deals with the control of processes having recycle streams. These processes can be modeled as state delayed systems. In this work the problem of robust design of an observed-based controller for these systems is presented. The system is assumed to have norm-bounded uncertainties which are independent in every matrix involved in its state space realization. To ensure asymptotic stability of the closed loop system, a Lyapunov functional is used to obtain delay-independent design conditions. The controller design is accomplished by means of a convex optimization procedure formulated using linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the main characteristics of the proposed design method.

Three-phase ac systems can be transferred into dq axis, where stability analysis becomes much simpler. In order to apply the stability criterion in AC system, an equivalent DQ admittance model for the three-phase diode rectifier has been developed in this paper, based on the ABC impedance model in paper [1]. Compared to the literature work, this model has two better features: (1) it is valid in a wide frequency range, which is from below fundamental frequency to high number times of fundamental frequency;(2) it considers the effect of the ac line impedance and output dc impedance. At different circuit parameters, including the extreme cases, the analytical modeling results and the numerical simulation results present excellent agreement, which demonstrates the accuracy of the analytical model.

This paper presents an alkaline electrolyzer (AE) modelling based on artificial neural networks (ANN). Artificial neural networks can be applied to develop models for predicting the performance of complex and nonlinear systems. An alkaline electrolyzer behavior was modeled with success using a Multilayer Perceptron Network (MLP). The dynamic model which is used has been trained by using a Levenberg-Marquardt back propagation algorithm to learn the relationships that govern the electrolyzer and then predict its behavior without any physical equations. The absorbed electric current and the operating temperature were used as input vector of the neural networks which allows to predict the cell voltage behavior. The performance of this predictive neural network model is carried out using Matlab/Simulink software. Simulation results show that this predictive model estimated accurately the electrolyzer's cell voltage with the tracking errors within ± 0.01 V, which is less than ± 0.44 %.

Retargeting is a kind of mapping function between input of the master device and output of the slave robot. If the slave robot should conduct a teleoperation task like tele-surgery, operation in the space, operation in a dangerous place, the point of the end-effector becomes very important. In this paper, we have developed a retargeting system for teleoperation task, using data glove and vision sensor, and magnetic sensor. The system can sense motion and position of human wrist, hand motion including the fingers. With this system, the user can manipulate teleoperated robotic arm and robotic hand without any difficulties. The proposed system can provide intuitive and precise teleoperation mode. Also, hand gesture-based control mode was investigated using data glove.

During the manufacturing of the windings of an electric motor, enamel-insulated copper conductors are subjected to mechanical strain. This strain may adversely affect the electrical performance of the enamel insulation. Partial discharge inception voltage is useful for comparing the performance of insulations. Therefore, experiments were done in evaluating partial discharge inception voltages in order to determine the effect of different levels of tensile-strain on the electrical properties of the insulation system. Within the scope of this study, unstrained and tensile-strained, enamel-insulated, copper conductors with rectangular cross-section were investigated and compared for their breakdown voltages and partial discharge behavior.

For the last two decades, significant improvements in charging technologies have been made. Moreover, novel applications have been proposed and tested, obtaining important and promising results. Inductive charging for electric vehicles (EV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) is one of them. Because of the positive impact that this technology represents, it is important to understand the general characteristics of this novel application. This paper aims to give a general understanding of inductive charging systems for EV and plug-in HEV. The explanation of what is an inductive power transfer (IPT) transformer and how electrical power is transferred through air is also presented. The review of the electrical characteristics of an IPT transformer is shown: derivation of equations and presentation of the equivalent circuit. The analysis of the series-series (SS) compensation topology is covered. Additionally, to validate the theoretical concepts, an IPT transformer setup with a 5cm air gap is simulated. The simulation results where as expected from the theory. The power transfer capability of the system was increased from 0.05 W, with no capacitive compensation, to 87.6 W, with capacitive compensation. The plots and circuit simulations where obtained in MATLAB and SIMULINK respectively.

This paper presents a modified DC bus voltage balancing algorithm for a neutral-point clamped (NPC) three-level inverter based motor drives for permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM) used in electric vehicle applications. The topology used for DC bus voltage balancing is based on nearest three vectors (N3V) with a space vector pulse width modulation scheme (SV-PWM). In this scheme, the voltage space vectors are rearranged based on the four redundant small voltage vectors, to keep the two DC link capacitor voltages in their specific tolerance bands, even during fast transient conditions of the machine. This topology provides high stability and lower switching loss compared to the conventional N3V scheme. The performance of the proposed scheme is verified by simulation and hardware experimental tests.

In this work, we consider a hybrid of interweave and underlay modes of operation for cognitive radio systems with random connectivity and bursty packet arrivals. Under the designed hybrid access policy, the secondary communication system is allowed to operate in the interweave mode only when its transmission has no harm on the primary communication. This is when the primary communication system is idle or the interference link from the secondary source to the primary destination is disconnected. The secondary communication system can optionally operate in the underlay mode, although when it is inevitable to interfere with the primary communication. The underlay mode is activated with some probability, called the hybrid rate. We analyze the stability of the hybrid access policy and show that it is not always beneficial when compared against the interweave-only mode. Thus, the condition for which the hybrid access policy can outperform is specified.

We consider the problem of reconstructing the image of an object that is illuminated only by diffracted fields, i.e., there is no line-of-sight between the object and the source of illumination. The geometry of the problem consists of a partial metallic enclosure, i.e., an open metallic box, containing an object. The illumination is provided by a system of multiple transmitting and receiving antennas, which belong to an RF Tomography system (L. Lo Monte, D. Erricolo, F. Soldovieri, M.C. Wicks, “Radio Frequency Tomography for Tunnel Detection,” IEEE Trans. Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Vol. 48, No. 3, Mar. 2010, pp. 1128-1137).
