Queuing theory has been extensively used in the modelling and performance analysis of cloud computing systems. The phenomenon of the task (or request) reneging, that is, the dropping of requests from the request queue often occur in cloud computing systems, and it is important to consider it when developing performance evaluations models for cloud computing infrastructures. Majority of studies in the performance evaluation of cloud computing data centres with the use of queuing theory do not consider the fact that the tasks could be removed from queue without being serviced. The removal of tasks from the queue could be due to the user impatience, execution deadline expiration, security reasons, or as an active queue management strategy. The reneging could be correlated in nature, that is, if a request is dropped (or reneged) at any time epoch, and then there is a probability that a request may or may not be dropped at the next time epoch. This kind of dropping (or reneging) of requests is referred to as correlated request reneging. In this paper we have modelled a cloud computing infrastructure with correlated request reneging using queuing theory. An M/M/1/N queuing model with correlated reneging has been used to study the performance analysis of the load balancing server of a cloud computing system. The steady-state as well as the transient performance analyses have been carried out. Important measures of performance like a vera ge queue size, average delay, probability of task blocking, and the probability of no waiting in the queue are studied. Finally, some comparisons are performed which describe the effect of correlated task reneging over simple exponential reneging. © 2021 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

The paper considers the importance of expanding the possibilities of environmental monitoring of environmental air parameters in the event of man-made emergencies. Software and hardware solutions have been developed for visualization and analysis of data from public environmental monitoring systems in normal and emergency situations using Power BI and Vaisala devices. The integration of various subsystems for measuring atmospheric air and microclimate indicators in a single computer system with a single software interface was carried out.

Empirical Risk Minimization with Relative Entropy Regularization: Optimality and Sensitivity Analysis

The optimality and sensitivity of the empirical risk minimization problem with relative entropy regularization (ERM-RER) are investigated for the case in which the reference is a σ-finite measure instead of a probability measure. This generalization allows for a larger degree of flexibility in the incorporation of prior knowledge over the set of models. In this setting, the interplay of the regularization parameter, the reference measure, the risk function, and the empirical risk induced by the solution of the ERM-RER problem is characterized. This characterization yields necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of regularization parameters that achieve arbitrarily small empirical risk with arbitrarily high probability. Additionally, the sensitivity of the expected empirical risk to deviations from the solution of the ERM-RER problem is studied. Dataset-dependent and dataset-independent upper bounds on the absolute value of the sensitivity are presented. In a special case, it is shown that the expectation (with respect to the datasets) of the absolute value of the sensitivity is upper bounded, up to a constant factor, by the square root of the lautum information between the models and the datasets. © 2022, CC BY.

The forgotten document-oriented database management systems: An overview and benchmark of native XML DODBMSes in comparison with JSON DODBMSes

In the current context of Big Data, a multitude of new NoSQL solutions for storing, managing, and extracting information and patterns from semi-structured data have been proposed and implemented. These solutions were developed to relieve the issue of rigid data structures present in relational databases, by introducing semi-structured and flexible schema design. As current data generated by different sources and devices, especially from IoT sensors and actuators, use either XML or JSON format, depending on the application, database technologies that store and query semi-structured data in XML format are needed. Thus, Native XML Databases, which were initially designed to manipulate XML data using standardized querying languages, i.e., XQuery and XPath, were rebranded as NoSQL Document-Oriented Databases systems. Currently, the majority of these solutions have been replaced with the more modern JSON based Database Management systems. However, we believe that XML-based solutions can still deliver performance in executing complex queries on heterogeneous collections. Unfortunately nowadays, research lacks a clear comparison of the scalability and performance for database technologies that store and query documents in XML versus the more modern JSON format. Moreover, to the best of our knowledge, there are no Big Data-compliant benchmarks for such database technologies. In this paper, we present a comparison for selected Document-Oriented Database systems that either use the XML format to encode documents, i.e., BaseX, eXist-db, and Sedna, or the JSON format, i.e., MongoDB, CouchDB, and Couchbase. To underline the performance differences we also propose a benchmark that uses a heterogeneous complex schema on a large DBLP corpus. © 2021, CC BY.

Generalization Analysis of Machine Learning Algorithms via the Worst-Case Data-Generating Probability Measure

In this paper, the worst-case probability measure over the data is introduced as a tool for characterizing the generalization capabilities of machine learning algorithms. More specifically, the worst-case probability measure is a Gibbs probability measure and the unique solution to the maximization of the expected loss under a relative entropy constraint with respect to a reference probability measure. Fundamental generalization metrics, such as the sensitivity of the expected loss, the sensitivity of the empirical risk, and the generalization gap are shown to have closed-form expressions involving the worst-case data-generating probability measure. Existing results for the Gibbs algorithm, such as characterizing the generalization gap as a sum of mutual information and lautum information, up to a constant factor, are recovered. A novel parallel is established between the worst-case data-generating probability measure and the Gibbs algorithm. Specifically, the Gibbs probability measure is identified as a fundamental commonality of the model space and the data space for machine learning algorithms. © 2023, CC BY.

Covariance estimation from compressive data partitions using a projected gradient-based algorithm

Covariance matrix estimation techniques require high acquisition costs that challenge the sampling systems’ storing and transmission capabilities. For this reason, various acquisition approaches have been developed to simultaneously sense and compress the relevant information of the signal using random projections. However, estimating the covariance matrix from the random projections is an ill-posed problem that requires further information about the data, such as sparsity, low rank, or stationary behavior. Furthermore, this approach fails using high compression ratios. Therefore, this paper proposes an algorithm based on the projected gradient method to recover a low-rank or Toeplitz approximation of the covariance matrix. The proposed algorithm divides the data into subsets projected onto different subspaces, assuming that each subset contains an approximation of the signal statistics, improving the inverse problem’s condition. The error induced by this assumption is analytically derived along with the convergence guarantees of the proposed method. Extensive simulations show that the proposed algorithm can effectively recover the covariance matrix of hyperspectral images with high compression ratios (8 − 15% approx) in noisy scenarios. Additionally, simulations and theoretical results show that filtering the gradient reduces the estimator’s error recovering up to twice the number of eigenvectors. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

This paper deals with the development of an adaptive robust controller for an Unmanned Aircraft System with variable mass. The goal is to improve trajectory tracking and energy performance while the aircraft mass is gradually reducing due to payload release. To improve the trajectory tracking performance, we propose an algorithm that merges the concepts of least squares method and sliding mode observer for the estimation of the vehicle mass. The nonlinear observer estimates the linear velocities and accelerations, which are further used to obtain the vehicle mass. A robust adaptive pole placement controller based on the Attractive Ellipsoid Method uses this estimation to update the controllers gains due to the mass variation. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for performing aerial transportation and deployment of payloads, we present a numerical example comparing the performance of the proposed method with respect to using Proportional Derivative controllers as well as Robust controllers. © 2021 Chinese automatic control Society and John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd

In this paper, the power quality of interconnected microgrids is managed using a Model Predictive control (MPC) methodology which manipulates the power converters of the microgrids in order to achieve the requirements. The control algorithm is developed for the microgrids working modes: grid-connected, islanded and interconnected. The results and simulations are also applied to the transition between the different working modes. In order to show the potential of the control algorithm a comparison study is carried out with classical Proportional-Integral Pulse Width Modulation (PI-PWM) based controllers. The proposed control algorithm not only improves the transient response in comparison with classical methods but also shows an optimal behavior in all the working modes, minimizing the harmonics content in current and voltage even with the presence of non-balanced and non-harmonic-free three-phase voltage and current systems.

The article is devoted to the results of an experimental study the integrity, reliability and efficiency of the social network graph as a complex network in terms of transferring messages between users. The paper explores the possibilities of using augmented and virtual reality technologies to create distance online courses in order to ensure the acquisition of hard and soft skills of electrical engineering specialists. The use of 3D visualization, animation, sound accompaniment, subtitling in the development and formation of training courses of educational components allows you to fill it with the necessary informational content, immersing the student in a real production environment. The use of augmented reality allows you to adapt the educational process and provide the necessary competencies for the real technological process and equipment.
