Observations of data characteristics and irregularities through domain-oriented transformations of attributes

The paper presents research dedicated to observations of relations between attribute properties and discretisation. In the investigations described, the gradually increasing sets of features were discretised by selected approaches, and several variants of data were constructed. The continuous, partially discrete, and completely translated datasets were explored by the chosen classifiers and their performance studied in the context of a number of discretised attributes, discretisation procedures, and the way of processing of features and datasets. The stylometric problem of authorship attribution was the machine learning task under study. The experimental results enable to observe closer the specificity of style-markers employed as characteristic features, and indicate conditions for efficient recognition of authorship. They can be extended to other application domains with similar characteristics.

In response to the escalating demand for electricity, the aging process and inherent failures in power lines have become unavoidable challenges in their operational integrity. This research addresses the imperative need for a robust method to detect damage in power insulator disc images, introducing a novel feature extraction technique grounded in color intensity profile transformation and ensemble learning. For the purposes of the research, a specific dataset was developed based on publicly available images of power insulators. The collection consists of 9232 images of insulator discs which included 2184 images of damaged discs. The discernible damages include breakages and burnouts. Two distinct analysis variants were employed. In the first variant (V1), two classification groups were selected: disc with damages and disc without damages. In the second variant (V2), three classification groups were selected: discs without damage, broken discs, and burnout discs. The described research was divided into two successive stages. In the first of them (S1), the transformed color intensity profiles for the prepared data set were built and various machine learning models for their classification were trained and evaluated. In the next stage (S2), previously developed, highest efficient machine learning models, were used to make the detection of various damaged types of overhead line insulator discs. For the first stage of research high-performance results and a high value of the F1 score parameters were obtained (F1 score = 0.999 for the first variant (S1V1) and F1 score = 0.992 for the second variant (S1V2). In the second stage of research and the first variant (S2V1), the highest result of the F1 score was 0.932 and for the second variant (S2V2) F1 score was 0.930. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Real-Time Multi-Object Tracking using YOLOv8 and SORT on a SoC FPGA

Multi-object tracking (MOT) is one of the most important problems in computer vision and a key component of any vision-based perception system used in advanced autonomous mobile robotics. Therefore, its implementation on low-power and real-time embedded platforms is highly desirable. Modern MOT algorithms should be able to track objects of a given class (e.g. people or vehicles). In addition, the number of objects to be tracked is not known in advance, and they may appear and disappear at any time, as well as be obscured. For these reasons, the most popular and successful approaches have recently been based on the tracking paradigm. Therefore, the presence of a high quality object detector is essential, which in practice accounts for the vast majority of the computational and memory complexity of the whole MOT system. In this paper, we propose an FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) implementation of an embedded MOT system based on a quantized YOLOv8 detector and the SORT (Simple Online Realtime Tracker) tracker. We use a modified version of the FINN framework to utilize external memory for model parameters and to support operations necessary required by YOLOv8. We discuss the evaluation of detection and tracking performance using the COCO and MOT15 datasets, where we achieve 0.21 mAP and 38.9 MOTA respectively. As the computational platform, we use an MPSoC system (Zynq UltraScale+ device from AMD/Xilinx) where the detector is deployed in reprogrammable logic and the tracking algorithm is implemented in the processor system. © 2025, CC BY.

The paper presents the results of experimental studies of autonomous power supply sources formed according to the 'internal combustion engine-induction generator' scheme. Autonomous local sources of energy supply according to this scheme are formed from existing electromechanical and electrotechnical equipment of other functional purposes only for the period of electricity demand. Such sources of electricity are universal for welding and other technological equipment of military and civil, including agricultural, machinery. According to the results, the viability of the proposed concept of creating autonomous power supply sources based on motor vehicles and electrical equipment has been proven. The limits of guaranteed excitation and subsequent trouble-free operation of autonomous local sources of power supply with power to consumers of various categories have been established. © 2022 IEEE.

Modeling uncertainty has been an active and important topic in the fields of data-driven modeling and machine learning. Uncertainty ubiquitously exists in any data modeling process, making it challenging to identify the optimal models among many potential candidates. This article proposes an uncertainty-informed method to address the model selection problem. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated on a dataset generated from a complex system model. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and its superiority over conventional approaches. This method has minimal requirements for the length of training data and model types, making it applicable for various modeling frameworks. © 2024 IEEE.

Stylometric analysis of texts relies on learning characteristic traits of writing styles for authors. Once these patterns are discovered, they can be compared to the ones present in other text samples, to recognise their authorship. This recognition can be compromised if input datasets are prepared without taking into consideration possible stratification of the input space, leading to specific grouping of datapoints, or sub-classes within distinguished classes. The paper shows research dedicated to construction of various structures of input datasets, and combinations of such structures between train and test sets. In the research the influence of different stratification forms on the performance of selected popular classification systems was observed. To minimise the number of influencing factors, a task of authorship attribution was performed as binary classification with balanced classes. Stylometric descriptors exploited belonged to lexical and syntactic group, giving frequencies of occurrence for chosen style-markers. It resulted in real-valued attributes and these values were explored without applying discretisation, in order to avoid the possible bias of this procedure on observations. © 2022 The Authors. This article describes in detail the implementation of an automated parking house model based on ATmega2560 microcontroller that enables simple and efficient parking of cars in precisely determined positions. Described model offers to user convenient parking of the car model. In addition to the automated parking system, the system provides several additional functions realized by displacement sensors and smoke sensors. One of the goals of this paper is to eliminate potentially dangerous situations and collisions during parking and thereby increase safety in this area. The garage house model is not designed solely for parking purposes but also as a practical teaching tool in the field of sensors and actuators. It is precisely in this area that students can expand their skills in designing and implementing programs that can enable all the functions of the garage house - temperature and smoke detection, precise positioning of the platform through stepper motors, display outputs, and more. At the same time, they will learn teamwork, where the functionality of the garage house is divided into multiple parts, and individual teams of students must collaborate to successfully solve and create a fully functional garage house software. © 2023 IEEE.

Relative or decision reducts belong with mechanisms dedicated to feature selection, and they are embedded in rough set approach to data processing. Algorithms for reduct construction typically aim at dimensionality reduction aspect, searching for smallest reducts, which are considered as the most advantageous from the point of view of knowledge representation. However, classifiers build on reduced data models, based on reducts, can significantly vary in performance. Therefore, to ensure quality of predictions, other characteristics of reducts, apart from their cardinalities, need to be taken into account. The paper presents research in which estimation of reduct quality through their characteristics was reflected in calculation of the proposed weighting factors leading to attribute rankings. These rankings were next employed in the process of filtering decision rules, inferred by classic rough set approach. Constructed rule-based classifiers were applied in the stylometric domain to solve a task of authorship attribution. © 2022 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. In this paper, we enhance a distributed version of the well known k-means algorithm with privacy-preservation features. While ensuring that sensitive or confidential information remains undisclosed to unauthorized entities (in our case these entities are curious nodes within the network), we maintain the desirable features of the distributed algorithm: the transmitted values are quantized, which optimizes bandwidth utilization and alleviates communication bottlenecks, and nodes possess the ability to collectively determine when to terminate the algorithm, which enables the conservation of valuable resources. We introduce a novel privacy-preserving protocol that not only preserves the privacy of a node's state, but it also ensures confidentiality about its cluster affiliation (i.e., it does not reveal to curious nodes whether a node participates in the update calculation for a specific centroid value). Moreover, we precisely characterize topological conditions that guarantee privacy preservation for individual nodes. Our distributed algorithm allows the formation of exclusive clusters within a finite time frame on any static and strongly connected directed graph. © 2023 IEEE.

In recent years, event cameras (DVS - Dynamic Vision Sensors) have been used in vision systems as an alternative or supplement to traditional cameras. They are characterised by high dynamic range, high temporal resolution, low latency, and reliable performance in limited lighting conditions - parameters that are particularly important in the context of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and self-driving cars. In this work, we test whether these rather novel sensors can be applied to the popular task of traffic sign detection. To this end, we analyse different representations of the event data: event frame, event frequency, and the exponentially decaying time surface, and apply video frame reconstruction using a deep neural network called FireNet. We use the deep convolutional neural network YOLOv4 as a detector. For particular representations, we obtain a detection accuracy in the range of 86.9-88.9% mAP@0.5. The use of a fusion of the considered representations allows us to obtain a detector with higher accuracy of 89.9% mAP@0.5. In comparison, the detector for the frames reconstructed with FireNet is characterised by an accuracy of 72.67% mAP@0.5. The results obtained illustrate the potential of event cameras in automotive applications, either as standalone sensors or in close cooperation with typical frame-based cameras. © 2022 Division of Signal Processing and Electronic systems, Poznan University of Technology (DSPES PUT).
