Microwave imaging (MWI) can be used as an alternative modality for monitoring human bone health. So far, studies on microwave bone imaging have considered bone as a homogenous tissue;however, bone is composed of a cortical and trabecular layer having significantly different dielectric properties and microarchitecture. The trabecular bone is more susceptible to diseases like osteoporosis. Contrarily, osteoarthritis, another significant bone disease, has a more severe impact on cortical bone. Therefore, considering cortical and trabecular bone as two different bone types is of paramount importance for diagnosing different bone diseases. To this end, this study has made the first attempt to design and reconstruct the cortical and trabecular bone phantoms separately. The bone phantoms were designed as a single-layered heel-shaped structure. A Distorted Born Iterative Method (DBIM) approach in combination with the Iterative Method with Adaptive Thresholding for Compressed Sensing (IMATCS) has been employed for solving the electromagnetic inverse scattering problem. The simulation results have shown that the cortical and the trabecular bone can be distinguished based on the reconstructed dielectric properties even for low values of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The findings of this study have shown that the adopted approach can be used to reconstruct the cortical and trabecular bones with reasonable accuracy and hence aid in monitoring different bone diseases based on their reconstructed dielectric properties. © 2023 IEEE.

Simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) is a cutting-edge concept for the sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks. In this paper, we propose a novel system that incorporates STAR-RIS with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) using rate splitting multiple access (RSMA). The proposed system facilitates communication from a multi-antenna base station (BS) to single-antenna users in a downlink transmission. The BS concurrently sends energy and information signals to multiple energy harvesting receivers (EHRs) and information data receivers (IDRs) with the support of a deployed STAR-RIS. Furthermore, an optimization is introduced to strike a balance between users’ sum rate and the total harvested energy. To achieve this, an optimization problem is formulated to optimize the energy/information beamforming vectors at the BS, the phase shifts at the STAR-RIS, and the common message rate. Subsequently, we employ a meta deep deterministic policy gradient (Meta-DDPG) approach to solve the complex problem. Simulation results validate that the proposed algorithm significantly enhances both data rate and harvested energy in comparison to conventional DDPG. © 2024, CC BY.

Gradient-based attacks are a primary tool to evaluate robustness of machine-learning models. However, many attacks tend to provide overly-optimistic evaluations as they use fixed loss functions, optimizers, step-size schedulers, and default hyperparameters. In this work, we tackle these limitations by proposing a parametric variation of the well-known fast minimum-norm attack algorithm, whose loss, optimizer, step-size scheduler, and hyperparameters can be dynamically adjusted. We re-evaluate 12 robust models, showing that our attack finds smaller adversarial perturbations without requiring any additional tuning. This also enables reporting adversarial robustness as a function of the perturbation budget, providing a more complete evaluation than that offered by fixed-budget attacks, while remaining efficient. © 2024, CC BY.

Industry 4.0, digital transformation towards Internet of Things (IoT) focuses on productivity rather than security, therefore often face cybersecurity challenges. To overcome such, a centralized security solution focusing on four major areas 1) Standardization, 2) Security configurations with update management, 3) Authentication and physical access control and 4) Intrusion detection was applied to Cyber Physical System (CPS) based garment manufacturing system to overcome the security gap. Security policies based on ISO 27001:2013 and IEC 62443 security standards were applied to the security configuration management system in the design stage to achieve 'security by design' concept. Security and audit configurations were applied using Ansible for the automated tool that can be customized based on requirements. A Raspberry Pi 4 was utilized as IDS (Intrusion Detection System) to evaluate performance. The physical access control prevents unauthorized access and access monitoring was done using logs. The proposed system enhances security, reaching for a cost-effective, efficient, reusable solution, and provides a comprehensive security solution for potential challenges of current and future smart manufacturing. The system is secured in terms of strategy, design, and operations rather than securing the system after deployment. © 2021 IEEE.

The paper discusses the challenges in controlling a two-stage photovoltaic (PV)-based shunt active power filter (SAPF) under distorted grid conditions and stochastic PV system behavior. To address this, the paper proposes an adaptive proportional integral (API) regulator to regulate the DC-link voltage, which adapts its parameters based on the DC-link error voltage to provide low bandwidth for disturbance rejection and high bandwidth for dynamic performance enhancement. The paper also proposes an estimation method for the reference current using the sliding discrete Fourier transform and the instantaneous symmetrical component theory, which is suitable for non-ideal grid or load conditions. The accuracy of the proposed reference current estimation method is analyzed using time- and frequency-domain analysis. The performance of the PV-SAPF system with the proposed control algorithms is illustrated through simulation and real-time hardware validation under various grid conditions. Despite distorted grid conditions, the total harmonic distortion of the grid current is substantially within IEEE Std 519-2014. The proposed API regulator and reference current estimation method show promising results in improving the performance of the PV-SAPF system in the presence of internal and external disturbances. © 2013 IEEE.

A skeletonized water distribution system (WDS) model plays an important role in decision making process for its design and operations in planning phase. Given energy is the main driving force to operate a WDS efficiently and with the recent hikes in energy price, the investigation of energy flow in WDS is much more important than ever before. While a skeletonized network is easy to handle and takes less amount of time to run, it should represent the real-world scenario including the demand and hydraulics as accurately as possible. Failure to represent real-world scenario can mislead design and operational decisions including energy consumptions and delivery pressure. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how the energy flow in a WDS varies with the extent of the skeletonized network. Keeping the total demand constant for a network and the spatial distribution of the demand within a range in the skeletonized networks, how the energy consumption at the pump station, energy loss in the pipe, and the energy storage in the tank vary with the size of the skeletonized networks are investigated in this study. Energy balance model has been set up for each skeletonized model to observe the impact on energy flow for a series of models. Since the number of pipes and nodes can impact hydraulics, which eventually impact the energy flow, the paper considers two types of networks: branch and loop water distribution systems. The study has been applied to two hypothetical literature networks. Due to skeletonization, the flow pattern in the loop system changes more than that in the branch system causing higher percentage change of frictional energy loss in the loop system. The energy consumption or loss per unit demand per node in the skeletonized networks is found almost linear for the branch system. However, this parameter changes non-linearly in the skeletonized networks for the loop system. © World Environmental and Water Resources Congress *** rights reserved

This article presents the design of a array microstrip antenna with circular polarization for the evaluation of the specific absorption rate (SAR) in human tissues. The analysis focuses on a single element and a two element microstrip patch, each designed at 2.5 GHz. Both antennas were crafted on a microstrip substrate, sporting a thickness of 1.6 mm and a dielectric constant of 4.3. An evaluation was conducted that contrasted the efficiency of the engineered antenna array with that of the standalone antenna, with particular emphasis on VSWR (Voltage Standing Wave Radio), gain, and directionality, was designed, simulated, and optimized using CST Microwave Studio (MWS) software. Furthermore, the SAR level was scrutinized under flat conditions within the human tissue representation.

This tutorial serves as an introductory guide to Monte Carlo tree search (MCTS), a versatile methodology for sequential decision making under uncertainty through stochastic/Monte Carlo simulation. MCTS gained notoriety from its pivotal role in Google DeepMind’s AlphaZero and AlphaGo, hailed as major breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI) due to AlphaGo defeating the reigning human world Go champion Lee Sedol in 2016 and the world’s top-ranked Go player Ke Jie in 2017. AlphaZero, without requiring any domain-specific knowledge beyond the game rules (tabula rasa), achieved remarkable success by surpassing previous benchmarks in Go and outperforming leading AI opponents in chess (Stockfish) and shogi (Elmo) after just 24 hours of MCTS-driven reinforcement learning. We demonstrate the building blocks of MCTS and its performance through decision trees and the game of Othello, and provide an empirical simulation study for the latter. © 2024 IEEE.

This study analyzes the closed-loop control strategy for the domino resonant inductive power transfer (DR-IPT) system (modulation of DC-link voltage, phase shift, and switching frequency) for wireless battery charging. A high-voltage AC line (HVAC) is supposed to provide the initial AC voltage for the power converter. Three closed-loop control scenarios are used and the performance of the DR-IPT is examined. The frequency and phase shift controls are applied directly to the full-bridge inverter via the PWM technique, and the DC-link voltage control is employed with the buck-boost converter. This study shows that PI controllers are appropriate to achieve the desired system performance to charge a LiPo battery. Also, the simulation results reveal that the charging process can be effectively regulated using controllers; however, among different approaches, the phase shift control method might be considered the most suitable approach for charging the LiPo battery and avoiding bifurcation and increasing the cost of the RD-IPT system.

Physics-based character control generates realistic motion dynamics by leveraging kinematic priors from large-scale data within a simulation engine. The simulated motion respects physical plausibility, while dynamic cues like contacts and forces guide compelling human-scene interaction. However, leveraging audio cues, which can capture physical contacts in a costeffective way, has been less explored in animating human motions. In this work, we demonstrate that audio inputs can enhance accuracy in predicting footsteps and capturing human locomotion dynamics. Experiments validate that audio-aided control from sparse observations (e.g., an IMU sensor on a VR headset) enhances the prediction accuracy of contact dynamics and motion tracking, offering a practical auxiliary signal for robotics, gaming, and virtual environments. © 2025 The Authors.
