The Impact of the Energy Storage System Operation Strategy on Power Grid Reliability

Based on the empirical data published by the Korea Electric Power Exchange and the Korea Meteorological Administration, we present a methodology that predicts the system marginal prices. For this purpose, this study uses the long-short term memory (LSTM) technique, which is commonly used in time-series prediction problems. As a result, we present a strategy for operating energy storage systems (ESSs) from the perspective of a prosumer rather than a system operator or conventional utilities. This study also examines the effects of the proposed prosumer actions on the system. The proposed operating strategy is established based on dynamic programming. Precision medicine in cancer treatment increasingly relies on advanced radiotherapies, such as proton beam radiotherapy, to enhance efficacy of the treatment. When the proton beam in this treatment interacts with patient matter, the excited nuclei may emit prompt gamma ray interactions that can be captured by a Compton camera. The image reconstruction from this captured data faces the issue of mischaracterizing the sequences of incoming scattering events, leading to excessive background noise. To address this problem, several machine learning models such as Feedfoward Neural Networks (FNN) and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) were developed in PyTorch to properly characterize the scattering sequences on simulated datasets, including newly-created patient medium data, which were generated by using a pipeline comprised of the GEANT4 and Monte-Carlo Detector Effects (MCDE) softwares. These models were implemented using the novel 'Big-data REU Integrated Development and Experimentation' (BRIDE) platform, a modular pipeline that streamlines preprocessing, feature engineering, and model development and evaluation on parallelized GPU processors. Hyperparameter studies were done on the novel patient data as well as on water phantom datasets used during previous research. Patient data was more difficult than water phantom data to classify for both FNN and RNN models. FNN models had higher accuracy on patient medium data but lower accuracy on water phantom data when compared to RNN models. Previous results on several different datasets were reproduced on BRIDE and multiple new models achieved greater performance than in previous research. © 2024 IEEE.

Water cycles, climate-related hazards, and agroirrigation are strongly controlled by soil moisture (SM) content. For water resource management, prediction is a key to mitigate and regulate expected economic losses and property damages. This paper compares two supervised machine learning (ML) techniques: support vector regression (SVR) and random forest (RF) to predict SM. In RStudio, various meteorological variables: temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and rainfall are trained to estimate SM. For eight divisions, SM and weather variables are obtained from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Prediction of Worldwide Energy Resources (POWER). The experiments include daily observations for 39 (1982 to 2020) to develop SVR and RF models. To estimate SM from the predictive model, datasets from diverse regions: Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Chittagong, and Sylhet are utilized in training (60%) and Rangpur, Barisal, Khulna, and Dhaka are segregated for validation (40%) resulting in accuracy of 88 to 95.8%. This model further is applied to forecast daily SM for each city including two districts (Bogra and Jessore) and found slightly higher model performance for SVR (90.7%) than RF (90.1%) on average (Year: 2021). For agricultural, industrial and urban water supplies as well as drought, landslides, and river erosions can be mitigated by an accurate estimation of soil moisture. The investigations encourage for providing SM budget to public with supervised ML techniques mostly among data-sparse regions.

This paper presents a novel approach to analyze and optimize healthcare systems based on clinical pathways, using timed continuous Petri nets (TCPNs) under infinite server semantics. TCPNs allow for an efficient continuous-time analysis of the patient flow and resource utilization dynamics of these types of systems. We demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of our method through a case study of a hip fracture pathway at the "Lozano Blesa" University Clinical Hospital, in Zaragoza Spain. Additionally, we propose a method to optimize the behavior of the modeled system by taking a control theory approach, which enables the system to achieve maximum throughput more efficiently. Finally, we provide simulation results to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller in practical settings.

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a significant impact on global health and economy. Forecasting the spread of COVID-19 cases is essential for policymakers to make informed decisions and allocate resources accordingly. Deep learning has shown promising results in predicting the spread of infectious diseases, including COVID-19. However, selecting the most appropriate model for a given forecasting task can be challenging, as no single model is guaranteed to perform well for all scenarios. In this paper, we propose a distributed ensemble approach that combines the predictions of different deep learning models, including Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (Auto-ARIMA), Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), to improve the accuracy of COVID-19 case forecasts. Specifically, we train each deep learning model on a subset of the data and aggregate their predictions to obtain an ensemble forecast. To achieve a distributed ensemble, we use an edge computing framework to train the deep learning models on multiple nodes in a parallel and distributed manner. We evaluate our approach on publicly available COVID-19 datasets, and our results show that the proposed ensemble model outperforms the individual models in terms of forecasting accuracy. Furthermore, our distributed ensemble approach significantly reduces the training and prediction time compared to training each model separately. © 2023 IEEE.

Humans start their day by looking in the mirror at least once before leaving their homes every morning. In addition, they waste some considerable time of their busy workload in front of the mirror. To make this time more productive and useful, there ought to be a system that can be readily conducted, user-friendly, and smart according to the constant progress on the Internet of Things. The intelligent mirror is a new addition to the smart device family, which is a straightforward concept. There will be a screen placed behind a two-way mirror, and this Intelligent Mirror turns our room or bathroom mirror into a personal assistant with artificial intelligence. The purpose is to develop a smart mirror that can automate working humans' busy daily routines and manage their tasks when they spend their time in front of a mirror. To make the most of this moment, users can securely access all the relevant details of the day by looking in the mirror simultaneously. The intelligent mirror, which a single voice command can activate, will significantly help disabled persons and the general. Raspberry Pi has been used to build the proposed intelligent mirror, linked to the digital world via the Internet. The mirror can communicate with the user through voice commands and reply appropriately. The monitoring of emotions and health measuring function will provide a distinctive experience to the users. The mirror will reflect important elements such as weather, date & time, covid-19 situation reports, local news, To-do list, water reminder, home workouts, and meal plans. The mirror can also handle specialized functions such as automating and controlling home IoT devices. © 2021 IEEE.

In this work, we present PhysioFuseNet, a novel framework designed to enhance driver stress state classification. PhysioFuseNet integrates a CNN-based encoder-decoder model with multimodal biosignal fusion. Using a driving simulator, different multimodal signals were acquired, namely electrocardiography, electrodermal activity, photoplethysmography, and respiration rate from (N = 25) healthy subjects. The experiment is of 35 minutes duration and contains different stress states (baseline (5 minutes), while normal, cognitive, and emotional sessions for 10 minutes). Multimodal features are extracted and employed in an encoder-decoder network. Extracted encoder features are combined through intermediate fusion and fed to support vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF) classifiers. Experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of our approach, outperforming previous methods by achieving accuracies of 0.95 and 0.94 for SVM and RF, respectively. Notably, the framework excels in classifying emotional and cognitive stress states. In summary, the proposed framework could be useful in stress assessment in real-time and clinical conditions.

This paper presents a novel testbed designed for 5th-Generation (5G) positioning using Universal Software Radio Peripherals (USRPs). The testbed integrates multiple units: an Operation Unit for test management, a User Unit equipped with an Ettus E312 USRP, and a Station Unit featuring an Ettus N310 USRP equipped with a three-element Uniform Linear Array for Angle of Arrival estimation. Alongside ultra wide-band ranging, the testbed estimates the user’s position relative to the base station. Signal processing algorithms are executed in a dedicated processing unit. Key challenges addressed include phase misalignment between RX channel pairs due to different Local Oscillators in the Ettus N310, necessitating real-time calibration for precise signal alignment. High sampling rates (up to 61.44 MSps) result in large IQ sample files, managed efficiently using a snapshot technique to optimize storage without compromising testbed positioning capabilities. The testbed synchronizes angular measurements with ranging estimates allowing consistent performance evaluation for real-life cases of dynamic users (e.g. pedestrian). Experimental results demonstrate the testbed’s effectiveness in achieving accurate pedestrian user localization.

In this work, we investigate the compression capabilities of a photonic neuromorphic accelerator relying on an optical spectrum slicing technique [1], following a high-flow 1D imaging cytometry setup, able to image 62000 particles/sec. The utilized image scheme relies on a technique, where spatial information is transfered to the spectrum and subsequently through dispersion to the temporal domain. Therefore, it can replace high speed spectrometers with a single photodetector [2]. On the other hand, the elevated image acquisition rate, trigger the generation of a staggering amount of data, which can cause a processing backlog at the digital backend. In this context, we explore, for the first time, the use of a photonic neuromorphic pre-processing unit, following the cytometer that can reduce the number of trainable parameters at a lightweight digital backend by a factor of 2.5, while at the same time, it can project incoming data to a high dimensional space boosting accuracy.

ROBUSTNESS OF DYNAMICS IN GAMES: A CONTRACTION MAPPING DECOMPOSITION APPROACH

A systematic framework for analyzing dynamical attributes of games has not been well-studied except for the special class of potential or near-potential games. In particular, the existing results have shortcomings in determining the asymptotic behavior of a given dynamic in a designated game. Although there is a large body literature on developing convergent dynamics to the Nash equilibrium (NE) of a game, in general, the asymptotic behavior of an underlying dynamic may not be even close to a NE. In this paper, we initiate a new direction towards game dynamics by studying the fundamental properties of the map of dynamics in games. To this aim, we first decompose the map of a given dynamic into contractive and non-contractive parts and then explore the asymptotic behavior of those dynamics using the proximity of such decomposition to contraction mappings. In particular, we analyze the non-contractive behavior for better/best response dynamics in discrete-action space sequential/repeated games and show that the non-contractive part of those dynamics is well-behaved in a certain sense. That allows us to estimate the asymptotic behavior of such dynamics using a neighborhood around the fixed point of their contractive part proxy.
