In many industrial applications, the number of defect samples is often insufficient for defect detection using conventional deep learning techniques. Also, the frequent change of PCBA board types on the product line introduces new defect types and adds a layer of challenge to the detection task considered in this paper. We propose a deep learning algorithm that targets learning patterns from various defect types with unbalanced training samples in the PCBA manufacturing product lines. A novel batch sampling method is proposed for the deep learning method for PCBA defect detection. We have validated the proposed algorithm using normal and defective images. The results show that the proposed deep learning method can accurately identify defects in PBCA images and achieve an overall accuracy of 98%. This deep learning technique can also be extended to detect other surface-level defects. © 2022 IEEE.

Genetic instability is one of the hallmarks of cancer, however mutations can occur for different causes and induce different effects. Mutational signatures are characteristic patterns of somatic mutations in cancer genomes, reflecting the underlying mutational processes. A mutational signature can be determined by studying the kind of mutations a patient has acquired during their life: patient stratification based on mutational signatures has become more and more useful in genomic studies, given its possible clinical implications. In this work we focused on Single Base Substitution (SBS) signatures to study a cohort of 115 metastatic melanoma patients. We inferred and identified two mutational signatures characterizing the patients. Based on these signatures we divided patients into two group: the bigger group was characterized by a signature associated with exposure to ultraviolet light, while the smaller group resulted to be mostly composed of patients which did not respond to immunotherapy (anti-PD1) and that presented a low mutational count. More importantly this second group showed a significantly worse survival outcome. The use of mutational signatures is clearly a powerful tool to identify disease sub-types that have a clinical relevance, however we believe that this topic needs further investigation focused on the characterization of patient subtypes with a multi-omics based approach.

Precise image segmentation is one of the dominant factors in disease diagnosis. A typical application is the segmentation of breast ultrasound images, allowing radiologists to suggest what to do next. After emerging deep learning technology especially convolutional neural networks (CNNs), the image segmentation model achieved state-of-the-art performance in various medical applications such as cancer detection and classification, lung node segmentation, cell segmentation and so on. However, despite these successes, a big question arises: to what extent is the model certain about the predicted result? Generally, most deep learning models focus on high accuracy but not on uncertainty of predicted results, which is not enough to make a critical real-life decision such as a disease diagnosis, where a wrong decision can be life-threatening. Hence for making a crucial decision, it is essential that the predicted result will provide not only accuracy but also estimate model uncertainty. Our contribution to this research is to build a system that predicts pixel-wise semantic segmentation and provides uncertainty estimation of the predicted results. It is achieved by adding a dropout layer during training and using Monte Carlo dropout in inference. We evaluate our model with the breast ultrasound image dataset (BUSI) and compare the results with a few other state-of-the-art methods where our method outperforms others in terms of IoU.

Thanks to their sensitivity to different changes affecting the environment and capability of demonstrating the impacts of various pollutant types, fishes are considered valuable and suitable species to be used as bioindicators for the water body pollution. Measurement of Morphometric parameters of Fish Erythrocytes (MFE) has been considered a valuable approach for analysis of health status of fishes. Conventional MFE measurement methods have several limitations, including poor measurement reproducibility and reliability, since they rely mainly on the human expertise, as well as required intensive highly time-consuming work to take measurements manually. To address these issues, this work presents a solution based on image processing and ellipse fitting technique to automatically measure MFE. The proposed method first applies customized image processing steps to locate cells in the image, segments nucleus and border of cells, and then uses the ellipse fitting algorithm to fit ellipse on detected cell/nucleus. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been validated through the comparison of results carried out by two expert biologists. The experimental results show that the proposed method properly fit the ellipse on both fish blood cell and its nucleus, indicating its potential as a promising tool for biomonitoring applications.

The increasing prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in recent decades has underscored the need for more accurate and objective diagnostic methods. Electroencephalography (EEG) holds promise as a tool in ASD neurobiological research due to its ability to capture neural oscillatory activity with high temporal resolution. This study aims to analyze the neurophysiological differences between individuals with ASD and neurotypical populations by examining EEG data using Hjorth parameters. The preprocessing stage involved using a Butterworth filter to enhance EEG signal quality by eliminating noise in the frequency range of 4-40 Hz. The Hjorth parameters, including Activity, Mobility, and Complexity, were used to assess the statistical characteristics of the EEG signals. The analysis was conducted on EEG data collected from 5 typical individuals and 5 ASD ASD subjects. Our findings reveal that the Hjorth Activity parameter is notably lower in the ASD group across all regions, with the most significant differences observed in the left and right frontal areas, where average activity measures 0.236 μV 2 and 0.060 μV 2 in ASD individuals, compared to 0.512 μV 2 and 0.138 μV 2 in the neurotypical group. However, the Hjorth Complexity and Mobility values remained consistent between the two groups, implying that the fundamental structure of the EEG signals is relatively preserved. These findings offer insights into the neurobiological mechanisms of ASD and suggest the potential use of Hjorth parameters in developing more targeted interventions for individuals with ASD.

Proactive traffic management in 5G networks is crucial for optimizing network efficiency, ensuring quality of service, adapting to dynamic conditions, and enhancing the user experience. In this paper, we propose a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) architecture that leverages spatiotemporal features in network traffic data to predict future traffic. Our approach incorporates a Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory (ConvLSTM) model within the generator of the GAN, which collaborates with the discriminator, utilizing a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model, to provide essential feedback for training the generator. This integration ensures that our model not only predicts future traffic with improved accuracy but also adapts to dynamic network conditions. Based on experimental results using network traces, our model significantly outperforms the baseline, reducing prediction error by 12% while forecasting network traffic for the next 1 minute. These findings represent a significant advancement in proactive network management, particularly in addressing the challenges posed by real-time streaming and other latency-sensitive applications in 5G networks.

Decomposing a complex system into smaller abstract functional blocks and developing mathematical models to represent their behavior is an important activity towards developing comprehensive system understanding. In this paper, we decompose the ideal Quantum Teleportation protocol into a collection of simple quantum circuit blocks, examine the behavior of each block, and show how collections of blocks operate to create more complex circuits. We believe this approach greatly simplifies the understanding of how the Quantum Teleportation protocol works. This paper is introductory in nature and is intended to help those who are new to modeling, simulating, and analyzing ideal quantum circuits.

This paper proposes a user selection scheme for federated learning (FL) over wireless networks to reduce communication time based on channel capacity. In particular, the edge server calculates the Shannon channel capacity of each client for each round, and clients with a certain threshold capacity are randomly selected to participate in FL. We show that the convergence time of the proposed scheme outperformed that of the conventional scheme through computer simulation based on an image processing task under a wireless channel with pass-loss, shadowing, and Rician flat-fading. Moreover, the superiority of FL to centralized learning (CL) regarding total time is demonstrated theoretically and validated through computer simulation.

Adopting Digital Twin (DT) technology in vehicular edge computing (VEC) enables efficient capture of real-time state information of applications, thereby addressing complex task scheduling problems. Existing literature studies considered only minimizing service latency for task offloading; however, there is room for exploring strategies to enhance user Quality of Experience (QoE) in timeliness and reliability domains. In this paper, we have developed an optimization framework using Mixed Integer Linear programming (MILP), namely QuETOD, which minimizes service latency by allocating task execution responsibility to highly reliable and reputed vehicles in a DT-enabled VEC environment. The developed QuETOD framework clusters the vehicles based on the demand-supply theory of economics by considering computing resources and utilizing the multi-weighted subjective logic for getting the proper reputation update of the vehicles. The experimental results of the developed QuETOD system depict significant performance improvement in terms of QoE and reliability compared to the state-of-the-art works as high as 15% and 25%, respectively.

Cancer disparities are adverse differences in cancer measures that exist among certain population groups. Given that the role they play not only in the disease prognosis but also in therapy response, there is an urgent need to understand what causes them. Most studies investigate these disparities by analyzing transcriptomic data and in particular miRNAs for their regulatory role, but only focusing on expression levels. To face this challenge we propose MIRROR, a new method which analyzes a differential co-expression network of miRNAs between patients’ cohorts, to study the role they play at the target genes’ level. Doing so, we can study the altered molecular mechanism that are linked to cancer disparities. The application of MIRROR to two different cases of cancer disparities has demonstrated its efficacy in identifying molecular players involved in the considered disparity, presenting itself as a viable option to approach this challenge.
