In the realm of forensic science, precise identification of individuals holds paramount importance in both investigative procedures and legal proceedings. Hands and palms recognition has emerged as a valuable biometric modality within forensic applications, owing to the distinct and intricate features inherent to these anatomical regions. The elaborate patterns of veins, creases, and ridges present on palms and fingers serve as rich sources of biometric data, crucial for accurate identification purposes. Furthermore, given the frequent involvement of hands and palms in criminal activities such as theft and assault, their recognition becomes imperative for establishing links between suspects and crime scenes. However, developing robust recognition systems tailored for forensic applications poses notable challenges, including variations in hand poses, lighting conditions, and image quality. To address these hurdles, sophisticated deep learning techniques, notably transfer learning, have been employed. By harnessing pre-trained deep learning models namely NasNetLarge, NasNetMobile, and EfficientNet, initially trained on expansive datasets for general image recognition tasks, we can adapt these models to the specific task of hands and palms recognition in forensic contexts. Our findings reveal that all three models consistently achieved over 92% accuracy across all metrics evaluated, demonstrating their efficacy as strong contenders for the hands-and-palms recognition task. Notably, the EfficientNet model exhibited superior performance compared to its counterparts, boasting more than 95.8% accuracy, precision, F1-score and recall, along with more than 98.6% specificity and 99.4% AUC. © 2024 IOS Press. The Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) is a linchpin of modern computing systems, governing secure system initialization and booting. This paper is urgently needed because of the surge in UEFI-related attacks and vulnerabilities in recent years. Motivated by this urgent concern, we undertake an extensive exploration of the UEFI landscape, dissecting its distribution supply chain, booting process, and security features. We carefully study a spectrum of UEFI-targeted attacks and proofs of concept (PoCs) for exploiting UEFI-related vulnerabilities. Building upon these insights, we construct a comprehensive attack threat model encompassing threat actors, attack vectors, attack types, vulnerabilities, attack capabilities, and attacker objectives. Drawing inspiration from the MITRE ATT&CK framework, we present a MITRE ATT&CK-like taxonomy delineating tactics, techniques, and sub-techniques in the context of UEFI attacks. This taxonomy can provide a road map for identifying existing gaps and developing new techniques for rootkit prevention, detection, and removal. Finally, the paper discusses existing countermeasures against UEFI attacks including a variety of technical and operational measures that can be implemented to lower the risk of UEFI attacks to an acceptable level. This paper seeks to clarify the complexities of UEFI and equip the cybersecurity community with the necessary knowledge to strengthen the security of this critical component against a growing threat landscape. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are crucial elements of the innate immune system;and they are effective against bacteria that cause several diseases. These peptides are investigated as potential alternatives of antibiotics to treat infections. Since wet lab experiments are expensive and time-consuming, computational methods become crucial in this field. In this study, we suggest a computational technique for AMP prediction using deep neural networks (DNN). We trained a DNN classifier using physicochemical features that include a sequential model;and evaluated the model with 10-fold cross-validation on a benchmark dataset. We compared our method with other machine learning approaches and demonstrated that the method we developed generates higher performance (accuracy: 92%, precision: 92%, recall: 93%, f1: 93%, AUC: 98%). In our experiments, we have realized that there is a strong positive correlation between the ‘Normalized Hydrophobic Moment’ feature and ‘Angle Subtended by the Hydrophobic Residues’ feature;and strong negative correlations between ‘Normalized Hydrophobicity’ feature and ‘Disordered Conformation Propensity’ feature, and between ‘Amphilicity Index’ - ‘Disordered Conformation Propensity’ features. We believe that the approach we proposed could guide further experimental studies and could facilitate the prediction of other types of AMPs having anticancer, antivirus, antiparasitic activities. © 2023 by SCITEPRESS – Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

Sign language is a non-verbal communication method used to communicate between hard of hearing or deaf and ordinary people. Automatic Sign language detection is a complex computer vision problem due to the diversity of modern sign languages and variations in gesture positions, hand and finger form, and body part placements. This research paper aims to conduct a systematic experimental evaluation of computer vision-based approaches for sign language recognition. The present research focuses on mapping non-segmented video streams to glosses to gain insights into sign language recognition. The proposed machine learning model consists of Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) layers such as Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). The model is implemented using current deep learning frameworks such as Google TensorFlow and Keras API. © 2022 IEEE.

Facial expression recognition(FER)remains a hot research area among computer vision researchers and still becomes a challenge because of high intraclass *** techniques for this problem depend on hand-crafted features,namely,LBP,SIFT,and HOG,along with that a classifier trained on a database of videos or *** execute perform well on image datasets captured in a controlled condition;however not perform well in the more challenging dataset,which has partial faces and image ***,many studies presented an endwise structure for facial expression recognition by utilizing DL ***,this study develops an earthworm optimization with an improved SqueezeNet-based FER(EWOISN-FER)*** presented EWOISN-FER model primarily applies the contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization(CLAHE)technique as a pre-processing *** addition,the improved SqueezeNet model is exploited to derive an optimal set of feature vectors,and the hyperparameter tuning process is performed by the stochastic gradient boosting(SGB)***,EWO with sparse autoencoder(SAE)is employed for the FER process,and the EWO algorithm appropriately chooses the SAE ***-ranging experimental analysis is carried out to examine the performance of the proposed *** experimental outcomes indicate the supremacy of the presented EWOISN-FER technique.

To address the problem of enormous differences in two heterogeneous images, the traditional unsupervised frameworks are most normally realized by converting two images into a common domain with various auxiliary strategies, such as transformation and alignment, which requires extensive calculation and has difficulty balancing the training tasks. To achieve a concise framework, this article proposes self-guided autoencoders (SGAE) for unsupervised change detection (CD) in heterogeneous remote sensing images (RSIs). Unlike traditional methods that aim to narrow the differences of heterogeneous images to highlight the changed information, SGAE forces the flow of identification in formation generated in unlabeled data through self-guided iterations. First, initial unsupervised networks output an elementary change map that will be screened to obtain reliable pseudolabels. The selected pseudolabeled samples will be used as the input of a supervised network to obtain another change map. Then, multiple change maps will be fused to refine the confidence of pseudolabels again, obtaining new fused pseudolabeled samples for the self-guided network, which will be trained with pseudolabeled samples and unlabeled samples. Finally, the above operations will be repeated to continuously optimize the net, which helps itself to extract the discriminative features for classification in self-guided iterations. Experiments compared with several algorithms on four datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of our method, which can help unsupervised models improve discriminative feature extraction and classification performance with a more flexible learning method. © 2020 IEEE.

Noise suppression and understanding speech in a complex environment with the presence of numerous and dominant surrounding noise is very difficult for humans. To deal with this problem, microphone array, which exploit a priori information of designed geometry of microphone array, the direction of arrival (DOA) of interest signal or the properties of recorded situation, is used with aiming at preserving the desired speaker without speech distortion while reducing background noise. Generalized Sidelobe Canceller (GSC) beamformer has been installed in almost all acoustic equipment, hearing aids, mobile phones. Unfortunately, the performance of GSC beamformer is often corrupted in many scenarios, such as imprecise DOA, microphone mismatches or different microphone sensitivities. In this paper, a spectral mask - based suggested algorithm to reduce the speech leakage in the reference signal of GSC beamformer. The proposed method is evaluated for increasing the speech quality of dual - microphone systems. © 2023 IEEE.

Current global events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian-Ukrainian war, have had a notable impact on the rise in the volume of freight transportation on the Georgian railway. Consequently, the efficient utilization of railway systems, along with monitoring the state of operational processes and technical equipment, plays a crucial role in ensuring smooth and uninterrupted transportation. Key factors to consider include speed, reliability, and the quality of shipments. Railway transportation is progressing worldwide, and effective management is undeniably a priority for our *** essential element for identifying and managing freight wagons is the Arabic numerals printed on them, which indicate their main characteristics and ownership. According to internationally recognized agreements, foreign wagons, as well as those owned or temporarily used by railway administrations, must be promptly returned to their country of dispatch. Within the first 24 hours of crossing the border, "inventory"freight wagons are subject to an average daily charge of 20 Swiss francs, while owned wagons incur an average daily rental fee of US$30. This circumstance, along with rolling stock management, presents one of the critical ***, hundreds of railway employees are involved in identifying the rolling stock in our country. These workers walk along the stations where the parked rolling stock is located. Once they visually recognize the freight car numbers, they relay the information to the relevant station operators via transmitters. Initially, these operators manually record the numbers in special journals and then enter the data into a unified electronic registry system. As a result, railway freight shipments require significant human and time resources, with a high probability of error. This situation considerably slows down the speed of railway service and increases its costs. © 2023 IEEE.
