By the beginning of 2020, the world woke up to a global pandemic that changed people’s everyday lives and restrained their physical contact. During those times Social Media Platforms (SMPs) were almost the only mean of individual-to-individual and government-to-individuals communications. Therefore, people’s opinions were more expressed on SM. On the other hand, election candidates used SM to promote themselves and engage with voters. In this study, we investigate how COVID-19 affected voters’ opinions through the months of the US presidential campaign and eventually predict the 2020 US Presidential Election results using Twitter’s data. Mainly two types of experiments were conducted and compared;(i) transformer-based, and (ii) rule-based sentiment analysis (SA). In addition, vote shares for the presidential candidates using both approaches were predicted. The results show that the rule-based approach nearly predicts the right winner, Joe Biden with MAE 2.1, outperforming the predicted results from CNBC, Economist/YouGov, and transformer-based (BERTweet) approach, except for RCP (MAE 1.55). © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

A key method used in the study of Natural Language Processing (NLP) is sentiment analysis, or emotion analysis, plays a pivotal role in text analysis. Its primary function is to discern and categorize the underlying emotions within textual content, classifying them as positive, neutral, or negative sentiments. A variety of textual inputs can be used with this process, including entire documents, individual sentences, and more. Understanding the sentiments expressed by individuals is of paramount importance to organizations in today’s digital age. Clients and customers now have the means to express their thoughts and emotions with greater ease and immediacy than ever before. This wealth of sentiment data can offer valuable insights that organizations can leverage to enhance their products, services, and overall customer experience. The present study focuses on the sentiment analysis of Twitter data related to the COVID-19 pandemic, employing the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) algorithm. To improve the accuracy of sentiment analysis, a pre-processing procedure is introduced, which involves the use of the Neat Text module in Python to clean the tweets. In this research endeavor, a dataset comprising 1,79,107 COVID-19-related tweets is subjected to sentiment analysis using the proposed pre-processing module and LSTM. The results demonstrate an impressive accuracy rate of 96% in accurately determining the sentiments conveyed in these COVID-19 tweets. In contrast, the existing algorithm, based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN), achieved a significantly lower accuracy rate of 76%. This research not only showcases the effectiveness of LSTM and pre-processing in sentiment analysis but also highlights the significance of sentiment analysis in gaining valuable insights from vast amounts of textual data, especially when important events like the COVID-19 pandemic are involved.

Data compression is a trending field that is used in data storage and data transmission systems. Lossy compression means that data cannot be completely retrieved while in lossless compression the compressed data must be reconstructed exactly. Lossless data compression is used in compressing binary files, telemetry data and high-fidelity medical and scientific images where details are crucial. There is no generic compression algorithm that gives best compression ratio on all data pattern. In this paper, we propose a hybrid lossless hardware architecture that compresses most of data patterns such as repeated data, Gaussian distribution data and images. A profiling-before-compressing and then choosing the right compression hardware is proposed. The proposed design is a highly parallelized architecture that can compress/decompress 64 bytes/cycle with minor overhead. Moreover, it provides high compression ratio on small block sizes as well as large ones.

Biometric technologies have been widely adopted in various commercial products, ranging from security systems to personal devices, due to their exceptional reliability and user-friendliness. Among these, palmprint biometrics has gained increasing attention for its advantages, such as ease of use, a larger surface area, and the ability to capture more features compared to other biometric methods. A typical palmprint biometric system involves five key stages: (a) Image Acquisition, (b) Hand Segmentation, (c) Pattern Generation, (d) Feature Extraction, and (e) Verification/Identification. The overall success of the system depends on the effectiveness of each stage, with hand segmentation being crucial for identifying the most relevant features for accurate verification. This study aims to achieve high-accuracy biometric recognition by segmenting hands from images captured in uncontrolled environments with complex backgrounds. Accuracy (ACC), Intersection over Union (IoU), F1-Score, and Dice Coefficient are the four critical metrics used to assess the performance of segmentation techniques. The findings demonstrate that the U-Net + ViT and MA-Net + ResNet34 techniques outperform traditional auto-encoder methods in both quantitative performance metrics and visual analysis, leading to significantly improved hand segmentation for biometric systems.

The article proposes models of the structural reliability of a multipath routing network with the possibility of its reconfiguration when switching path segments. The models are focused on optimizing the placement of segment switching nodes, aimed at achieving maximum network performance with the option of connecting request sources to the available communication paths with servers. The study considers the options for connecting each source of requests with one of the paths or with all paths for connecting to servers. The paper shows the existence of an optimal placement of path switching nodes, in which the maximum reliability of the system is achieved.

The article explores the possibility of improving the reliability of a network with multipath routing. A feature of the proposed study is the analysis of the influence of the placement of switching nodes that switch path segments on the probability of network connectivity with servers of the same type and heterogeneous in functionality. The purpose of the article is to increase the reliability of the network, taking into account the influence of the placement of communication nodes that implement the switching of route segments during reconfiguration, on the connectivity of the network with servers that are homogeneous and heterogeneous in functionality. The research involves the construction of a structural reliability model that takes into account the possibility of failures of both communication nodes and the links between them. The reliability model is built taking into account the availability of request sources with full and non-full access connections to the set of network paths.

The increasing popularity of smartphones has driven the development of advanced features, including access to users’ biometric data and a wide range of services via wireless connections. This provides developers with opportunities to create increasingly complex applications. However, the limited resources on mobile devices pose challenges when executing operations such as fingerprint-based person identification, especially with large datasets. Given these limitations, we propose and evaluate a software architecture to enable fingerprint identification on mobile devices. Our approach leverages computation offloading techniques to migrate application components to cloud and edge/cloudlet servers. Through our evaluation, we have observed that offloading the task to cloudlet or cloud servers significantly accelerates the identification process, even when multiple devices simultaneously offload to the remote environment. These findings highlight the potential benefits of leveraging offloading to enhance the performance of fingerprint identification on mobile devices.

Service Function Chaining (SFC), defines the capability of interconnecting a number of ordered Service Functions (SFs) to create composite network services. A critical issue in SFC is the autonomic fault recovery, i.e., bringing the system back to its normal operation after a hardware or software failure. To address this challenge, in this paper, we propose a novel distributed methodology that treats the SFC Self-Healing problem in an Edge-Cloud infrastructure, while accounting for the various stakeholders. In particular, the individual SFC healing decisions are iteratively optimized and determined, while a Reinforcement Learning (RL)-based SFC-to-datacenter association procedure is realized. This process is complemented by a combinatorial auction-based resource allocation mechanism that resolves the potential SFC collocations at the end of each iteration. The proper operation, effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed healing mechanism is assessed under various evaluation scenarios.

Modern networking paradigms like Service Function Chaining (SFC) allow for services to be broken down to a series of ordered and interconnected Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs) that can be hosted in generic servers in EdgeCloud datacenters. Nonetheless, a critical issue arises, when a hardware or software failure occurs and the VNFs of an SFC need to be repositioned, allowing to autonomously bring the system back to its normal operation, a process called self-healing. In this paper, a distributed methodology is proposed that aims to address this challenge, considering the requirements of all involved actors. Specifically, a Reinforcement Learning (RL) based algorithm is proposed that allows to iteratively optimize and determine an SFC healing solution upon a datacenter failure. As a second stage, a revenue-driven resource allocation mechanism is integrated, to resolve the contention for resources in an already functional datacenter that potentially occurs due to the repositioning. Various simulation scenarios prove the efficiency of our proposed resilient healing mechanism.

We performed machine learning using spectrum analysis and power spectra of electroencephalograms (EEGs) of patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Spectrum analysis was performed on the EEGs of MCI patients and healthy individuals, and the power spectrum values of the two groups were calculated and compared. Based on the power spectrum values of the theta and alpha bands, models for discriminating MCI patients were created using a support vector machine (SVM), and their accuracies were compared. In the spectrum analysis, the theta band showed significantly higher power spectrum values in the MCI group. In the comparison of the accuracies of SVM models, the model using the theta band showed higher values in parameters, such as accuracy rate. These results suggested that the power spectrum values of the theta band are useful for discriminating MCI patients. © 2024 IEEE.
