Knowledge Tracing (KT) focuses on modeling the exercise process of students, assessing their knowledge state changes during the exercise process, and further providing targeted guidance for teaching and learning. Current KT models have made significant progress by utilizing deep learning technologies to model relevant attributes of the questions. However, in current knowledge tracing strategies, we have yet to exhaustively explore how to precisely evaluate the hierarchies of students’ knowledge mastery (encompassing Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analyzing, Evaluating, and Creating) to better discern their current target hierarchy. To address the limitations of the KT model in accurately identifying and positioning target hierarchy, our research focuses on two key areas: first, we dynamically track students’ target hierarchies by evaluating their feedback on questions at different hierarchies;second, we assess their actual question-solving abilities within these target hierarchies, thereby optimizing our evaluation of their knowledge status. Based on these insights, we propose the Target Hierarchy-guided Knowledge Tracing (THKT) model. In this model, we first incorporate the identification of question hierarchy into the model representation. Then, to avoid homogenization of the target hierarchy, we dynamically track the appropriate hierarchy for students based on their varying feedback to questions of the same hierarchy, thereby pinpointing their learning target hierarchies. Simultaneously, we develop a KCs applied ability learning module that works in conjunction with the target hierarchies to generate interpretable prediction results. The proposed THKT model has been tested and evaluated using three public, real-world educational datasets. The findings clearly demonstrate that our approach shines in the realm of KT prediction tasks, providing significantly interpretability. A Knowledge-Injected Curriculum Pretraining Framework for Question Answering

Knowledge-based question answering (KBQA) is a key task in natural language processing research, and also an approach to access the web data and knowledge, which requires exploiting knowledge graphs (KGs) for reasoning. In the literature, one promising solution for KBQA is to incorporate the pretrained language model (LM) with KGs by generating KG-centered pretraining corpus, which has shown its superiority. However, these methods often depend on specific techniques and resources to work, which may not always be available and restrict its application. Moreover, existing methods focus more on improving language understanding with KGs, while neglect the more important human-like complex reasoning. To this end, in this paper, we propose a general Knowledge-Injected Curriculum Pretraining framework (KICP) to achieve comprehensive KG learning and exploitation for KBQA tasks, which is composed of knowledge injection (KI), knowledge adaptation (KA) and curriculum reasoning (CR). Specifically, the KI module first injects knowledge into the LM by generating KG-centered pretraining corpus, and generalizes the process into three key steps that could work with different implementations for flexible application. Next, the KA module learns knowledge from the generated corpus with LM equipped with an adapter as well as keeps its original natural language understanding ability to reduce the negative impacts of the difference between the generated and natural corpus. Last, to enable the LM with complex reasoning, the CR module follows human reasoning patterns to construct three corpora with increasing difficulties of reasoning, and further trains the LM from easy to hard in a curriculum manner to promote model learning. We provide an implementation of the general framework, and evaluate the proposed KICP on four real-word datasets. A smart ring is a wearable electronic device in the form of a ring that incorporates diverse sensors and computing technologies to perform a variety of functions. Designed for use with fingers, smart rings are capable of sensing more subtle and abundant hand movements, thus making them a good platform for interaction. Meanwhile, fingers are abundant with blood vessels and nerve endings and accustomed to wearing rings, providing an ideal site for continuous health monitoring through smart rings, which combine comfort with the ability to capture vital biometric data, making them suitable for all-day wear. We collected in total of 206 smart ring-related publications and conducted a systematic literature review. We provide a taxonomy regarding the sensing and feedback modalities, applications, and phenomena. We review and categorize these literatures into four main areas: (1) interaction - input, (2) interaction - output, (3) passive sensing - in body feature, (4) passive sensing - out body activity. This comprehensive review highlights the current advancements within the field of smart ring and identifies potential areas for future research. © 2025, CC BY.

High-quality underwater images are a vital source of modern marine vision and multimedia applications. But low visibility with color and contrast distortions in uneven underwater illumination conditions poses several challenges to these applications (e.g., visual servoing, long-range navigation, unmanned underwater vehicles, and SONAR imaging, etc.) working in robust conditions from dawn to dusk. Direct enhancement deteriorates the structure and texture with objectionable color casts due to distance-dependent attenuation and light scattering. This paper presents an adaptive self-supervised network for underwater image enhancement (ASSU-Net), which can work without relying on the type and quantity of training images, rather, it is capable of working with only a few input images. In this network, we split the image into reflection and illumination components to simplify the solution space, allowing us to handle the artifacts associated with each component independently. A structure and texture awareness scheme is introduced while following the mutual consistency of decomposition in combination with the histogram distribution. This scheme is embedded in the network to constrain objectionable artifacts (i.e., structure texture and edge distortions). The network loss is optimized to force the network to learn with a few shots of unpaired data, where we preserve visual details for low-lit underwater images. Extensive experiments are performed to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method.

Medical Visual Question Answering (Med-VQA) aims at answering clinical questions related to medical imaging, providing important reference for medical imaging diagnosis. Gastrointestinal visual question answering can deeply understand and analyze gastrointestinal medical images, provides supporting information to answer questions about the diagnostic process, and improves diagnostic accuracy and efficiency. However, most existing Med-VQA can only handle simple and general questions, struggling to tackle visual question answering related to complex diseases. Therefore, this paper proposes a Med-VQA model called CACL, which uses cross-guidance and improved combined loss. The model focuses on gastrointestinal image analysis and achieves efficient and accurate feature extraction for gastrointestinal images. A cross-guided attention module is also designed to enhance the model’s reasoning ability when dealing with complex cross-modal tasks. In addition, a multi-task composite loss function is designed to balance the loss of segmentation task and classification task, and improve the overall performance. Experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively improve the accuracy of gastrointestinal visual question answering.

The emergence of non-volatile memory(NVM)has introduced new opportunities for performance optimizations in existing storage *** better utilize its byte-addressability and near-DRAM performance,NVM can be attached on the memory bus and accessed via load/store memory instructions rather than the conventional block *** this scenario,a cache line(usually 64 bytes)becomes the data transfer unit between volatile and non-volatile ***,the failure-atomicity of write on NVM is the memory bit width(usually 8 bytes).This mismatch between the data transfer unit and the atomicity unit may introduce write amplification and compromise data consistency of node-based data structures such as B+-*** this paper,we propose WOBTree,a Write-Optimized B+-Tree for NVM to address the mismatch problem without expensive *** minimizes the update granularity from a tree node to a much smaller subnode and carefully arranges the write operations in it to ensure crash consistency and reduce write *** results show that compared with previous persistent B+-tree solutions,WOBTree reduces the write amplification by up to 86× and improves write performance by up to 61× while maintaining similar search performance.

Metal sheets have been widely used in various industrial production and production life aspects. However, the surface of metal plates is prone to multiple defects, which affect the electromagnetic characteristics and coating effect of metal plates. Currently, mainstream inspection uses YOLO, PaddleClas, and other methods to detect flat metal surfaces. These algorithms are all very potent in their classification capabilities, but as generalized defect handling algorithms, they cannot be specific to each type of defect in a real problem. In this paper, we propose a multi-information fusion method for defect recognition. We consider both low-level texture features and high-level convolutional features of metal surfaces for defect recognition. We use a convolutional neural network as the main body and add extracted and processed prompts during training. Finally, we test the proposed method extensively on Camshaft and Kaggle metal surface defects datasets, and the experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves a state-of-the-art recognition performance that surpasses previous defect recognition methods.

The combination of data-driven approaches and machine learning techniques has changed the design approach for new materials, propelling materials science research into the realm of the fourth paradigm. Researchers in the field of materials science have increasingly focused on utilizing machine learning methods to uncover the underlying nonlinear relationships within material data. However, there is currently limited research in the field of aluminum-silicon alloys regarding the prediction of alloy performance based on the composition-process-structure relationship. Additionally, there is a lack of data sharing in the aluminum-silicon alloy domain. Therefore, this study proposes a methodology. Firstly, an aluminum-silicon alloy dataset is constructed by mining relevant information from materials literature. Then, high-dimensional features in the dataset are subjected to feature selection techniques for dimensionality reduction. Subsequently, a multilayer perceptron model is applied to investigate the relationship between input features such as alloy composition, preparation process, and microstructural parameters, and output features such as yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation, enabling performance prediction.

Communication-Efficient Distributed Learning with Local Immediate Error Compensation

Gradient compression with error compensation has attracted significant attention with the target of reducing the heavy communication overhead in distributed learning. However, existing compression methods either perform only unidirectional compression in one iteration with higher communication cost, or bidirectional compression with slower convergence rate. In this work, we propose the Local Immediate Error Compensated SGD (LIEC-SGD) optimization algorithm to break the above bottlenecks based on bidirectional compression and carefully designed compensation approaches. Specifically, the bidirectional compression technique is to reduce the communication cost, and the compensation technique compensates the local compression error to the model update immediately while only maintaining the global error variable on the server throughout the iterations to boost its efficacy. Theoretically, we prove that LIEC-SGD is superior to previous works in either the convergence rate or the communication cost, which indicates that LIEC-SGD could inherit the dual advantages from unidirectional compression and bidirectional compression. Finally, experiments of training deep neural networks validate the effectiveness of the proposed LIEC-SGD algorithm. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.
