Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide due to its aggressive nature and complex variability. Accurate prognosis is therefore challenging but essential for guiding personalized treatment and follow-up. Previous research often relied on single data sources, missing the opportunity to combine various types of patient information for more comprehensive survival predictions. To address these challenges, we propose a two-stage fusion method named Cross-Attention and Multimodal Low-Rank Interaction Fusion Framework (CA-MLIF). In the first stage, we propose a CA mechanism for real-time feature updates and cross-modal mutual learning to capture rich semantic information. In the second stage, we design a novel multimodal low-rank interaction fusion method for survival prediction. Specifically, we present modal attention mechanism (MAM) for feature filtration, low-rank multimodal fusion (LMF) for model complexity reduction, and optimal weight concatenation (OWC) for maximizing feature integration. Extensive experiments on two public datasets TCGA-GBMLGG and TCGA-KIRC, as well as a multi-center in-house lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) dataset validate the effectiveness of CA-MLIF, which demonstrate that our method outperforms existing approaches in survival prediction under both pathology-gene fusion and CT-pathology fusion scenarios. Knowledge Tracing (KT) focuses on tracing stu-dents' evolving knowledge state in the process of question-answering, which has been widely applied to online learning systems. Existing KT methods leverage students' online question-answering logs to infer their knowledge state and predict their subsequent performance. However, these methods only focus on students' online behaviors without considering the fact that students' knowledge also evolves offline. Specifically, students have plenty of offline learning actions that also make changes in their knowledge state, which is called the offline knowledge evolution effect in this paper. However, these offline actions are not recorded by online learning systems, therefore leading to unreliable knowledge tracing results. To alleviate this problem, we propose a novel model named offline-aware knowledge tracing (OKT) that considers students' offline knowledge evolution for KT. In O KT, we introduce a novel concept named offline trait to represent student's offline learning action preference. Based on the preference, the model evaluates offline knowledge evolution, and apply the evolution to generate a new knowledge state for students' future performance prediction. To the end, we conduct experiments on three real-world benchmark datasets and demonstrate that OKT achieves state-of-the-art performance. Besides, the experimental results indicate that considering offline actions can help interpret the KT results.

Mathematical formulas are ubiquitous in courses such as Machine Learning. Understanding these formulas is the primary challenge for studying of students. If a searchable knowledge base can be built for these formulas, it will help students learn. Accurate identification of these formulas is an important step in building and querying the knowledge base. However, mathematical formulas have complex two-dimensional and nested structures, which makes them inconvenient to search like ordinary text. This paper employs Faster R-CNN to detect regions containing mathematical formulas and improves its backbone network, anchor box dimensions, and pre-training network to make it more accurate and efficient in identifing these formulas. Furthermore, in order to enhance the features and meaningful representation of mathematical formulas in the input image, we introduce the distance transformation. Finally, comparative experiments were conducted on the publicly dataset GTDB. Our proposed approach achieved recognition rates of 91.22% and 85.74% for isolated and hybrid formulas detection.

After the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, online teaching has gradually emerged as an indispensable component of education. Despite its convenience, online education lacks the immediate interactive experience inherent in traditional classrooms. This paper presents a meticulously designed DS-YOLOv8 network model, specifically tailored for real-time recognition of students raising their hands under cameras. On our proprietary dataset, this network model exhibits exceptional accuracy in hand-raising detection, showcasing a 1.3% improvement in the AP50 index compared to the baseline YOLOv8 model. Our focus lies on the application of hand-raising detection within online classrooms with an objective to provide enhanced support for teachers by promptly identifying students raising their hands and thereby improving teaching efficiency while enriching the interactive experience of students in virtual learning environments.

The Transformer architecture has achieved remarkable success in a number of domains including natural language processing and computer vision. However, when it comes to graph-structured data, transformers have not achieved competitive performance, especially on large graphs. In this paper, we identify the main deficiencies of current graph transformers: (1) Existing node sampling strategies in Graph Transformers are agnostic to the graph characteristics and the training process. (2) Most sampling strategies only focus on local neighbors and neglect the long-range dependencies in the graph. We conduct experimental investigations on synthetic datasets to show that existing sampling strategies are sub-optimal. To tackle the aforementioned problems, we formulate the optimization strategies of node sampling in Graph Transformer as an adversary bandit problem, where the rewards are related to the attention weights and can vary in the training procedure. Meanwhile, we propose a hierarchical attention scheme with graph coarsening to capture the long-range interactions while reducing computational complexity. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments on real-world datasets to demonstrate the superiority of our method over existing graph transformers and popular GNNs.

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) tomography (TomoSAR) has attracted remarkable interest for its ability in achieving threedimensional reconstruction along the elevation direction from multiple observations. In recent years, compressed sensing (CS) technique has been introduced into TomoSAR considering for its super-resolution ability with limited samples. Whereas, the CS-based methods suffer from several drawbacks, including weak noise resistance, high computational complexity and complex parameter fine-tuning. Among the different CS algorithms, iterative soft-thresholding algorithm (ISTA) is widely used as a robust reconstruction approach, however, the parameters in the ISTA are manually chosen, which usually requires a time-consuming fine-tuning process to achieve the best performance. Aiming at efficient TomoSAR imaging, a novel sparse unfolding network named analytic learned ISTA (ALISTA) is proposed towards the TomoSAR imaging problem in this paper, and the key parameters of ISTA are learned from training data via deep learning to avoid complex parameter fine-tuning and significantly relieves the training burden. In addition, experiments verify that it is feasible to use traditional CS algorithms as training labels, which provides a tangible supervised training method to achieve better 3D reconstruction performance even in the absence of labeled data in real applications.

Weight assignment is a universal and indispensable process in multi-view feature selection. However, most existing methods overlook the fuzziness and uncertainty implied in multi-view data. This may result in improper weight assignment, degrading the quality of selected features. A cross-view fuzziness and intra-view uncertainty-based weight reconstruction method (CFIUWR) is proposed for multi-view feature selection. With the fuzzy rough set theory, fuzzy approximation operators recognize cross-view fuzziness and intra-view uncertainty, which are evaluated by classification-related measurement. Cross-view fuzziness and intra-view uncertainty are incorporated to develop a reconstruction mechanism for view and feature weights. An optimization algorithm is derived, guaranteeing rapid convergence. Comparisons with state-of-the-art methods on several real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority of the CFIUWR. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Deformed spine radiograph spine segmentation can help doctors to analyze the disease site faster, which is a necessary part of the current development of competent healthcare. For scoliosis diagnosis, this paper designs an Attention-guided ResNet with an FPN-like Upsampling model(ARF-Net) for segmenting the cone part of the spine radiograph map. In this paper, ResNet50 is used as the backbone to propose the feature map. Then the Global-Coordinate Attention (GCA) attention mechanism is added to obtain the X-axis, Y-axis, and global features. Finally, through the SIMAMUP module, the feature map is upsampled to introduce more detailed information to prevent cone segmentation errors and to improve the cone segmentation capability. The final experimental findings demonstrate that the model described in this study has greater segmentation precision in the SpineWebl6 public dataset, with the Jaccard and Dice coefficients reaching 87.70% and 93.45%, respectively.

Region-aware Image-based Human Action Retrieval with Transformers

Human action understanding is a fundamental and challenging task in computer vision. Although there exists tremendous research on this area, most works focus on action recognition, while action retrieval has received less attention. In this paper, we focus on the neglected but important task of image-based action retrieval which aims to find images that depict the same action as a query image. We establish benchmarks for this task and set up important baseline methods for fair comparison. We present an end-to-end model that learns rich action representations from three aspects: the anchored person, contextual regions, and the global image. A novel fusion transformer module is designed to model the relationships among different features and effectively fuses them into an action representation. Experiments on the Stanford-40 and PASCAL VOC 2012 Action datasets show that the proposed method significantly outperforms previous approaches for image-based action retrieval. © 2024, CC BY.
