The aim of the Code4Thought project was to deliver a tool supported methodology that would facilitate the evaluation of a software product's quality according toISO/IEC-9126 software engineering quality standard. It was a joint collaboration between Dynacomp S.A. and the Laboratory for Graphics, Multimedia and GIS of the department of computer engineering and informatics of the University of Patras. The Code4thought project focused its research on extending the ISO/IEC-9126standard by employing additional metrics and developing new methods for facilitating system evaluators to define their own set of evaluation attributes. Furthermore, to develop innovative and platform-free methods for the extraction of elements and metrics from source code ***, to design and implement new data mining algorithms tailored for the analysis of software engineering data.

We present in this paper a simulation-based comparison of one of the best known multicast congestion control schemes - TFMCC - against our proposed adaptive smooth multicast protocol (ASMP). ASMP consists of a single-rate multicast congestion control, which takes advantage of the RTCP sender (SR) and receiver reports (RR) in order to adjust the sender's transmission rate in respect of the network conditions. The innovation in ASMP lays in the "smooth" transmission rate, which is TCP-friendly and prevent oscillations. We use an integrated simulation environment named Multi-Evalvid-RA for the evaluation of the two congestion control schemes. Multi-Evalvid-RA provides all the necessary tools to perform simulation studies and assess the video quality by using both network related metrics along with video quality measurements. The performance evaluation results show that ASMP is a very efficient solution for rate adaptive multimedia applications and a serious competitor to well know TFMCC.

A smart home application to eldercare: Current status and lessons learned

To address an aging population, we have been investigating sensor networks for monitoring older adults in their homes. In this paper, we report ongoing work in which passive sensor networks have been installed in 17 apartments in an aging in place eldercare facility. The network under development includes simple motion sensors, video sensors, and a bed sensor that captures sleep restlessness and pulse and respiration levels. Data collection has been ongoing for over two years in some apartments. This longevity in sensor data collection is allowing us to study the data and develop algorithms for identifying alert conditions such as falls, as well as extracting typical daily activity patterns for an individual. The goal is to capture patterns representing physical and cognitive health conditions and then recognize when activity patterns begin to deviate from the norm. In doing so, we strive to provide early detection of potential problems which may lead to serious health events if left unattended. We describe the components of the network and show examples of logged sensor data with correlated references to health events. A summary is also included on the challenges encountered and the lessons learned as a result of our experiences in monitoring aging adults in their homes. © 2009 IOS Press and the authors. We propose an active mask segmentation framework that combines the advantages of statistical modeling, smoothing, speed and flexibility offered by the traditional methods of region-growing, multiscale, multiresolution and active contours respectively. At the crux of this framework is a paradigm shift from evolving contours in the continuous domain to evolving multiple masks in the discrete domain. Thus, the active mask framework is particularly suited to segment digital images. We demonstrate the use of the framework in practice through the segmentation of punctate patterns in fluorescence microscope images. Experiments reveal that statistical modeling helps the multiple masks converge from a random initial configuration to a meaningful one. This obviates the need for an involved initialization procedure germane to most of the traditional methods used to segment fluorescence microscope images. While we provide the mathematical details of the functions used to segment fluorescence microscope images, this is only an instantiation of the active mask framework. We suggest some other instantiations of the framework to segment different types of images. © 2009 SPIE.

The current work addresses the unifi cation of Electronic Health Records related to cervical cancer into a single medical knowledge source, in the context of the EU-funded ASSIST research project. The project aims to facilitate the research for cervical precancer and cancer through a system that virtually unifi es multiple patient record repositories, physically located in different medical centers/hospitals, thus, increasing fl exibility by allowing the formation of study groups "on demand" and by recycling patient records in new studies. To this end, ASSIST uses semantic technologies to translate all medical entities (such as patient examination results, history, habits, genetic profi le) and represent them in a common form, encoded in the ASSIST Cervical Cancer Ontology. The current paper presents the knowledge elicitation approach followed, towards the defi nition and representation of the disease's medical concepts and rules that constitute the basis for the ASSIST Cervical Cancer Ontology. The proposed approach constitutes a paradigm for semantic integration of heterogeneous clinical data that may be applicable to other biomedical application domains.

This paper deals with resource allocation in multi-project manufacturing system design, where more than one shared renewable resource type may be required by the manufacturing operation and the availability of each type is time limited. The aim of the paper is to present a knowledge-based and constraint programming-driven approach to resource allocation where that data can be imprecise. The presented design scheme is used as a framework for developing a task oriented decision support tool for project portfolio prototyping (DST4P 3 ). The tool provides a prompt and interactive service to a set of routine queries defined in terms of both direct and inverse resource allocation tasks.

This paper explores the resistance of MOS Current MoDe Logic (MCML) against attacks based on the observation of the power consumption. Circuits implemented in MCML, in fact, have unique characteristics both in terms of power consumption and the dependency of the power profile from the input signal pattern. Therefore, MCML is suitable to protect cryptographic hardware from Differential Power Analysis and similar side-channel attacks. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of different logic styles against power analysis attacks, two full cores implementing the AES algorithm were realized and implemented with CMOS and MCML technology, and a set of different types of attack was performed using power traces derived from SPICE-level simulations. Although all keys were discovered for CMOS, MCML traces did not presents characteristic that can lead to a successful attack. ©Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009.

In short-term generation unit asset valuation, a decision whether to turn the unit ldquoonrdquo or ldquooffrdquo is relied upon the present realization of electricity and fuel prices. When the electricity and fuel prices are on an indifference locus (IL), the decision made will not effecting the expected profit. Therefore, the identification of ILs is crucial step in unit asset valuation method. A novel least-squares polynomial-based technique to approximate the continuous path of ILs is developed and implemented. By using this technique, the unit asset valuation problem can be solved faster than the standard method without compromising its accuracy. Testing and model verification are performed on actual data of the PJM power market. The results indicate that the proposed technique is effective and efficient while producing significantly accurate results. It reduces the computational burden by more than 245 times and 0.90% error for 2000 simulation times.

In order to make surfing the internet faster, and to save redundant processing load with each request for the same web page, many caching techniques have been developed to reduce latency of retrieving data on World Wide Web. In this paper we will give a quick overview of existing web caching techniques used for dynamic web pages then we will introduce a design and implementation model that take advantage of 'URL Rewriting' feature in some popular web servers, e.g. Apache, to provide an effective approach of caching dynamic web pages.

This paper is concerned with a strictly positive real H 2 controller design problem using an observer-based controller with Kalman filter gain. In this paper, we propose a successive method with non-common Lyapunov variables for this control problem. The feature of our method is to construct a controller sequence on which H 2 norm is monotonically non-increasingly while all controllers are strictly positive real. A numerical example shows the efficiency of our method.
