The routing algorithms for multimedia communication should use for routing more than one QoS parameter. This is because new services such as video on demand and remote meeting systems require better QoS. However, the problem of QoS routing is difficult and to find a feasible route with two independent path constraints is NP-complete. Also, QoS routing algorithms for broadband networks must be adaptive, flexible, and intelligent for efficient network management. In this paper, we propose a multipurpose optimization method for QoS routing based on Genetic Algorithm (GA). The simulation results show that proposed method has a good performance and is a promising method for QoS routing.

The SCHEMA Network of Excellence aims to bring together a critical mass of universities, research centers, industrial partners and end users, in order to design a reference system for content-based semantic scene analysis, interpretation and understanding. In this paper, advances in the development of the SCHEMA reference system are reported, focusing on the application of region-based image retrieval using automatic segmentation. More specifically, the integration of four segmentation algorithms and the MPEG-7 eXperimentation Model with the reference system are discussed, along with the motivation behind these and various other choices that were made during the development of the reference system. Experimental results for this system, as well as results for an earlier version of it employing proprietary descriptors, are shown using a common collection of images. Comparative evaluation of these versions, both in terms of retrieval accuracy and in terms of time-efficiency, allows the evaluation of the reference system as a whole as well as the evaluation of the usability of different components integrated with it, such as the MPEG-7 eXperimentation Model. These results illustrate the efficiency of the proposed system, as well as its suitability in serving as a test-bed for evaluating and comparing different algorithms and approaches pertaining to the content-based and semantic manipulation of visual information.

The topic of this paper is relative constructivism. We are concerned with classifying nonconstructive principles from the constructive viewpoint. We compare, up to provability in intuitionistic arithmetic, subclassical principles like Markov's principle, (a function-free version of) weak Konig's lemma, Post's theorem, excluded middle for simply existential and simply universal statements, and many others. Our motivations are rooted in the experience of one of the authors with an extended program extraction and of another author with bound extraction from classical proofs.

The paper proposes a novel distributed control architecture for shared protection with reduced complete routing information, which aims to initiate a graceful compromise between the amount of link-state dissemination and the performance impairment due to the incompleteness of routing information. We first give explicit and comprehensive descriptions on a number of reported routing information dissemination scenarios for shared protection. A novel framework of link-state dissemination for facilitating shared protection, called reduced complete routing scenario, is introduced, in which the singular value decomposition (SVD) transformation is adopted to deal with the information reduction. We show, through simulation, that the proposed scheme can achieve a higher throughput and a better estimation in reconstruction of the spare provision matrix than the other schemes taking the same complexity of link-state dissemination.

SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) has seriously hit to the worldwide for several months. Without a full understanding of the natural cause of illness and the mode of transmission, precautions are processed by the standard guidelines that lack of extensive system to identify and trace isolated persons, contact history of patients and infected disposals. To shorten the tracking time and increase the accuracy of infection, we introduce in this paper a MHS (mobile healthcare service) system, a platform that uses RFID (radio frequency identification) technologies and mobile devices for positioning and identifying persons and objects both for inside and outside hospital when disease taken place. Also, based on the applications for SARS infection control precautions, this system demonstrates how to receive patient's location and bio-information by using RFID technology for hospital and government to enact real-time infection control measures from the auditing mechanism among isolated patients in households or residential settings. Further, this model shows the possibility to bring medicare service that can become ubiquitous and can cross geographic barriers and enable medical information technology from e-Medicare to m-Medicare for future development in the medical industry.

Approximating of functions that are specified using imperfect knowledge is one of the central issues of many areas such as machine learning, pattern recognition, data mining, or qualitative reasoning. However, we do not have yet satisfactory methods for approximation of functions and developed calculi on function approximations. In the paper we discuss a function approximation using the rough set approach. The main difference with the existing approaches in rough set theory is based on modification of the inclusion measure. This makes it possible to overcome some drawbacks of the previously used definitions. For applications it is important to develop rough measures on approximated objects, in particular on function approximations. The modified inclusion measure is also used to define an exemplary measure, i.e., the rough integral.

Spatial and temporal database systems, both in theory and in practice, have developed dramatically over the past two decades to the point where usable commercial systems, underpinned by a robust theoretical foundation, are now starting to appear. While much remains to be done, topics for research must be chosen carefully to avoid embarking on impractical or unprofitable areas. This is particularly true for doctoral research where the candidate must build a tangible contribution in a relatively short time. The panel session at the Eighth International Symposium on Spatial and Temporal Databases (SSTD 2003) held on Santorini Island, Greece [7] in July 2003 thus took as its focus the question What to focus on (and what to avoid) in Spatial and Temporal Databases : recommendations for doctoral research.
