Enhancing patient-independent detection of freezing of gait in Parkinson’s disease with deep adversarial network

Freezing of gait (FoG) refers to sudden, relatively brief episodes of gait arrest in Parkinson’s disease, known to manifest in the advanced stages of the condition. Events of freezing are associated with tumbles, traumas, and psychological repercussions, significantly impacting the patient’s quality of life. The use of accelerometer data derived from sensors put on a patient’s body to detect FoG has previously been proposed using convolutional neural network (CNN)-based deep learning algorithms. Here, we combine a CNN + Long short-term Memory (LSTM)-attention model to detect FoG episodes—a first for the detection of FoG using the accelerometer data. CNN facilitates automatic feature extraction from the accelerometer data itself. The output from the CNN is fed to the LSTM network, which is known for capturing sequential information. Further, the attention mechanism introduces relative focus on individual sub-sequences during the training of the LSTM network. The proposed model is made patient independent using adversarial training. The proposed model achieved improvements of +7.60% (without adversarial training) and + 8.36% (with adversarial training) in the sensitivity values over state of the art. This is obtained with little or no compromise in specificity values. The corresponding improvements in accuracy values are +3.81 and +2.23%, respectively. These findings imply that the proposed method can detect FoG gaits satisfactorily and can be effective in achieving accurate monitoring and gait assistance for Parkinson’s disease patients during daily life and rehabilitation therapy. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

A Secret Sharing-Inspired Robust Distributed Backdoor Attack to Federated Learning

Federated Learning (FL) is vulnerable to backdoor attacks - especially distributed backdoor attacks (DBA) that are more persistent and stealthy than centralized backdoor attacks. However, we observe that the attack effectiveness of DBA can be largely reduced when encountering rebels, i.e., the agents promising to perform the attack but do not do so. To robustify DBAs, we present SSRDBA, a secret sharing-inspired robust DBA to FL. To be specific, given a same global trigger as DBA, SSRDBA carefully divides it into different shares based on secret sharing and exploits these shares to poison local data on malicious devices, respectively. SSRDBA enjoys several merits, e.g., only partial malicious agents guarantee the reconstruction of the global trigger. Extensive experimental results show that SSRDBA is more robust to rebels than DBA and can evade the state-of-the-art FL defenses mainly for centralized backdoor attacks. To mitigate SSRDBA, we further design a novel defense mechanism, termed NFDR, which shows great potential against SSRDBAon certain independent identically distributed datasets. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). An Integrated Framework with Enhanced Primitives for Post-Quantum Cryptography: HEDT and ECSIDH for Cloud Data Security and Key Exchange

If adversaries were to obtain quantum computers in the future, their massive computing power would likely break existing security schemes. Since security is a continuous process, more substantial security schemes must be developed. Current PQC schemes primarily focus on data security or key exchange, and further improvement towards enhanced PQC primitives is required. Our proposal in this research is an innovative paradigm for PQC-focused cloud data security. The proposed HEDT approach achieves encryption and decryption with significantly lower latency (20% improvement) and higher reliability than AES, DES, and RSA, as demonstrated through experimental results. Furthermore, ECSIDH, a hybrid key exchange mechanism combining SIDH and ECDH, improves security strength by 50% while maintaining computational costs within 1.13x of SIDH. Compared to individual key exchange schemes like SIDH, ECSIDH offers superior security as a PQC candidate. These results confirm the robustness and efficiency of the proposed framework in ensuring secure data outsourcing and key exchange in cloud environments. © 2025 Slovene Society Informatika. MSMFT: Multi-Stream Multimodal Factorized Transformer for Human Activity Recognition

Existing video-based human activity recognition (HAR) methods are susceptible to challenges such as lighting variations and occlusions in complex environments. Wearable sensors can effectively mitigate these issues. The fusion of the two can reduce environmental impacts, thus enhancing accuracy. However, the heterogeneity between the two data types presents a challenge for fusion. To address this, we propose an architecture called multi-stream multimodal factorized transformer (MSMFT), which leverages the aggregation capabilities of transformers to achieve alignment and fusion of multimodal features without relying on specific feature extractors. First, we designed a statistical feature projection (SFP) method to effectively tokenize wearable sensor data for transformer models. Second, we introduced temporal embedding (TE) to capture local temporal feature variations. Then, we incorporated a factorized transformer architecture that includes temporal and spatial transformer encoders (STEs) to extract global spatiotemporal features fully. Finally, to avoid the issue of modality entanglement caused by deep fusion, we constructed a multi-stream architecture comprising a video stream, wearable sensors stream, and fusion stream. This design allows for the extraction of both independent and interactive modality features. The performance of the MSMFT method was evaluated on three multimodal datasets: UP-Fall, UTD-MHAD, and MMAct. The results show that MSMFT performs better than the state-of-the-art, with a 16.83% improvement in cross-scene F1-score on the MMAct dataset. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

FIAC: fine-grained access control mechanism for cloud based IoT framework

Cloud computing technology provides various computing resources on demand to users on pay per use basis. The technology fails in terms of its usage due to confidentiality and privacy issues. Access control mechanisms are the tools to prevent unauthorized access to remotely stored data. Cipher Text Policy Attribute-based Encryption (CPABE) is a widely used tool for facilitating authorised users to access the remotely stored encrypted data with fine-grained access control. In the proposed model FIAC, access control mechanism is embedded in cloud-based application. The major contribution of this work is the design of three algorithms all of which are attribute based: Key Generation algorithm, and Encryption and Decryption algorithms. Only authorised users can view them to take appropriate action plans. To enhance security of the cloud-based monitoring system, we have embedded a security scheme, all of which are attribute based. Further, the computation time of the model is found to be encouraging so that it can be used in low power devices. The experimental outcomes establish the usability of our model. Apple Leaf Disease Detection Using Transfer Learning

Automated detection of plant diseases is crucial as it simplifies the task of monitoring large farms and identifies diseases at their early stages to mitigate further plant degradation. Besides the decline in plant health, reduced production severely impacts the country’s economy. Traditional disease identification methods, relying on human experts, are slow, time-consuming, and impractical for large farms. Our proposed model utilizes a combination of pre-trained Resnet18, Alexnet, GoogLeNet, and VGG16 networks to classify apple tree leaves into categories such as healthy, black rot, apple cedar rust, and apple scab based on images. Various image enhancement techniques were employed to enhance the model’s accuracy. Ultimately, our model achieved an accuracy of 97.25% on the validation dataset, demonstrating excellent performance across various metrics. Halo reduction multi-exposure image fusion technique

Multi-exposure image fusion (MEF) involves combining images captured at different exposure levels to create a single, well-exposed fused image. MEF has a wide range of applications, including low light, low contrast, night photography, medical imaging, and remote sensing. However, MEF methods often face issues like artifacts, halos around edges, color inconsistencies, noise amplification, and difficulty in preserving fine details. Moreover, assessing the quality of fused images objectively is complex due to the subjective nature of human perception. Solving the challenges is essential to developing efficient MEF techniques that produce high-quality results across various scenarios. The proposed technique introduces an approach to handling halo artifacts and implementing MEF. The Dense Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (DSIFT) is used to capture vital information about image brightness, texture, and edges from source images. Three weight maps are computed from the local mean, signal strength, and the global gradient for initial weight estimation. The local mean represents the brightness of specific image areas, signal strength preserves essential details like textures and edges while reducing image noise, and global gradient helps identify regions with significant pixel value shifts across multiple exposure images. The weight maps are then combined using a weighted average and a Gaussian smoothing filter is applied to reduce inherent noise and discontinuities in the original weights. Subsequently, pyramid decomposition is performed to generate a fused image. The efficiency of the proposed method is extensively tested on challenging multi-exposure image sequences. The results of the proposed approach demonstrate its superiority in both subjective evaluation and objective metrics like the MEF-Structural Similarity Index (MEF-SSIM), Natural Image Quality Evaluator (NIQE) and Gradient based performance measure (QAB/f). © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer

M-Bi-GRU-CNN: a hybrid deep learning model with optimized feature selection for enhanced crop yield prediction

Weather variability significantly impacts crop yield, posing challenges for large-scale agricultural operations. This study introduces a deep learning-based approach to enhance crop yield prediction accuracy. A Multi-Head Attention-based Bi-Directional Gated Recurrent Unit (M-Bi-GRU) integrated with a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is proposed. The publicly available Crop Recommendation dataset is pre-processed using data cleaning and Min–Max normalization to eliminate inconsistencies. Then, the Adaptive Reptile Search Optimization (ARSO) algorithm is used to identify the most relevant features for the prediction task. The M-Bi-GRU-CNN model uses these selected features to predict crop yields. The implementation is carried out in Python, and the performance is measured using a variety of metrics. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms existing methods, achieving a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 0.45, Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) of 0.07, and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 0.28. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.
