Microservice architecture is widely adopted among distributed systems. It follows the modular approach that decomposes large software applications into independent services. Kubernetes has become the standard tool for managing these microservices. It stores sensitive information like database passwords, API keys, and access tokens as Secret Objects. There are security mechanisms employed to safeguard these confidential data, such as encryption, Role Based Access Control (RBAC), and the least privilege principle. However, manually configuring these measures is time-consuming, requires specialized knowledge, and is prone to human error, thereby increasing the risks of misconfiguration. This research introduces $\mathrm{K}8\mathrm{s}$ Pro Sentinel, an operator that automates the configuration of encryption and access control for Secret Objects by extending the Kubernetes API server. This automation reduces human error and enhances security within clusters. The performance and reliability of the Sentinel operator were evaluated using Red Hat Operator Scorecard and chaos engineering practices.

ARGO-SLSA: Software Supply Chain Security in Argo Workflows

Distributed systems widely adopt microservice architecture to handle growing complexity and scale. It breaks applications into independent, loosely coupled services. Kubernetes has become the de facto standard when it comes to managing microservices. Automating complex, multi-step workflows is a common requirement in Kubernetes. Argo Workflows is a Kubernetes-native engine for managing these workflows in an automated fashion. These workflows generate artifacts such as executables, logs, container images, packages, etc. These artifacts require proper management, which is often automated through software supply chain security. However, Argo Workflows doesn't have any built-in ways to provide the ability to incorporate frameworks like Supply-chain Levels for Software Artifacts (SLSA), which is necessary to achieve artifact integrity, traceability, and security. This vacuum often creates silos because practitioners need to rely on third-party tools to meet software supply chain security standards. This paper proposes a Kubernetes-native controller written on top of existing open-source Argo Workflows to enhance the security of artifacts. Cryptographic signing and provenance attestations for the artifacts will be produced by the controller, which allows Argo Workflows to comply with SLSA standards. The paper proves implementations can be made to provide cryptographic signing and provenance attestations for the artifacts that can be produced by the controller, which will allow software artifacts built with Argo Workflows to comply with SLSA standards. This paper investigates the advancement of magnetic induction-based heart and respiration rate sensing by actively controlling the coil current. This is realized through the implementation of a current-starved inverter mechanism. Experiments show a notable level of accuracy of the proposed circuit in measuring heart and respiration activity when compared to a reference sensor. The direct manipulation of current levels was found to have a direct impact on the signal strength. Incrementing the overall current within the proposed circuit from 60 mA to 100 mA resulted in an augmentation of the output amplitude of the heart rate signal from 8.5 mV to 27 mV, accompanied by a marginal enhancement in beat-to-beat interval accuracy. Moreover, the proposed sensor demonstrates noteworthy precision in monitoring the respiratory rate when compared with the reference sensor under different current values, exhibiting the same trend in signal strength. This finding offers valuable insight for the development of future power-optimized magnetic induction sensors with enhanced robustness. © 2024 IEEE.

Online Vehicle Routing with Pickups and Deliveries under Time-Dependent Travel-Time Constraints

The Vehicle Routing Problem with pickups, deliveries and spatiotemporal service constraints (VRPPDSTC) is a quite challenging algorithmic problem that can be dealt with in either an offline or an online fashion. In this work, we focus on a generalization, called VRPPDSTCtd, in which the travel-time metric is time-dependent: the traversal-time per road segment (represented as a directed arc) is determined by some function of the departure-time from its tail towards its head. Time-dependence makes things much more complicated, even for the simpler problem of computing earliest-arrival-time paths which is a crucial subroutine to be solved (numerous times) by VRPPDSTCtd schedulers. We propose two online schedulers of requests to workers, one which is a time-dependent variant of the classical Plain-Insertion heuristic, and an extension of it trying to digest some sort of forecasts for future demands for service. We enrich these two online schedulers with two additional heuristics, one targeting for distance-balanced assignments of work loads to the workers and another that makes local-search-improvements to the produced solutions. We conduct a careful experimental evaluation of the proposed algorithms on a real-world instance, with or without these heuristics, and compare their quality with human-curated assignments provided by professional experts (human operators at actual pickup-and-delivery control centers), and also with feasible solutions constructed from a relaxed MILP formulation of VRPPDSTCtd, which is also introduced in this paper. Our findings are quite encouraging, demonstrating that the proposed algorithms produce solutions which (i) are significant improvements over the human-curated assignments, and (ii) have overall quality pretty close to that of the (extremely time-consuming) solutions provided by an exact solver for the MILP formulation. © 2024, CC BY.

The growing dependence on personal vehicles has intensified challenges in traffic management, violation monitoring, and locating stolen cars. Addressing these issues, this study introduces a real-time, smart system for detecting and recognizing Syrian car license plates using surveillance camera image processing. The system is built on a decentralized architecture with edge computers, notably the Khadas Vim3 equipped with Neural Processing Units (NPUs). It utilizes two YoloV4-tiny networks trained on a dataset of over 1100 images of Syrian license plate. The first network detects cars and plates with high accuracy, while the second recognizes numbers on the plates with 87% accuracy. Adhering to Internet of Things (IoT) principles, the system processes up to 16 frames per second for detection and 8 frames per second for broadcasting results, maintaining uninterrupted operation even if an edge computer is offline, thereby providing a consistent and efficient solution for traffic management challenges. © 2024 IEEE.

Computational Intelligence (CI) is a more efficient paradigm for solving real-world problems in uncertain conditions. The traditional CI approaches are not capable to provide the complete and sufficient solutions for problems. Therefore, new techniques are necessary to efficiently solve these issues seriously. New techniques, such as Emergent Intelligence (EI), Multi-Agent System (MAS), etc., provide robust, generic, flexible, and self-organised to solve complex real-world problems. In this paper, we discuss Emergent Intelligence (EI) and its uniqueness in solving problems in an uncertain environment. We also discuss EI, Swarm Intelligence (SI) and MultiAgent System (MAS)-based problem-solving in an uncertain environment and compared their performance. We have considered two different problems: job shop scheduling using EI and MAS and route establishment for routing using MAS, SI and EI in an uncertain environment. Each problem is categorically analysed and solved step by step using MAS, SI and EI in a dynamic environment. We measure the performance of these three methods by varying the number of agents, tasks and time. Performance measures are compared and shown to demonstrate the importance of EI over MAS and SI for solving problems in an uncertain environment. © 2021 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

This article presents a simulation study on the use of LoRaWAN technology in autonomous vehicles. The research focuses on developing an Auto-Handover Gateway for Autonomous Vehicles, utilizing LoRaWAN parameters such as bit rates, spreading factor (SF), packet loss, and received signal strength. These parameters are tested in simulations of autonomous vehicle movements, which include both regular and random motion patterns. The aim is to assess the performance of LoRaWAN in different scenarios and its impact on communication in autonomous vehicle systems. The simulation results show several key trends. As the vehicle moves further, the spreading factor (SF) increases, and bit rates tend to decrease, indicating a drop in communication performance over longer distances. The research also identifies that the gateway with the closest proximity to the vehicle is selected, both in random and non-random movement scenarios. Additionally, packet loss increases as the distance between the vehicle and the gateway grows, highlighting the challenges of maintaining reliable communication over long distances. These findings provide insights into optimizing LoRaWAN parameters for real-time communication in autonomous vehicles, contributing to the development of intelligent vehicle networks. © 2024 IEEE.

Population aging resulting from demographic changes requires some challenging decisions and necessary steps to be taken by different stakeholders to manage current and future demand for assistance and support. The consequences of population aging can be mitigated to some extent by assisting technologies that can support the autonomous living of older individuals and persons in need of care in their private environments as long as possible. A variety of technical solutions are already available on the market, but privacy protection is a serious, often neglected, issue when using such (assisting) technology. Thus, privacy needs to be thoroughly taken under consideration in this context. In a three-year project PAAL (‘Privacy-Aware and Acceptable Lifelogging Services for Older and Frail People’), researchers from different disciplines, such as law, rehabilitation, human-computer interaction, and computer science, investigated the phenomenon of privacy when using assistive lifelogging technologies. In concrete terms, the concept of Privacy by Design was realized using two exemplary lifelogging applications in private and professional environments. A user-centered empirical approach was applied to the lifelogging technologies, investigating the perceptions and attitudes of (older) users with different health-related and biographical profiles. The knowledge gained through the interdisciplinary collaboration can improve the implementation and optimization of assistive applications. In this paper, partners of the PAAL project present insights gained from their cross-national, interdisciplinary work regarding privacy-aware and acceptable lifelogging technologies. © 2022, The Author(s).

Privacy-preserved learning from non-i.i.d data in fog-assisted IoT:A federated learning approach

With the prevalence of the Internet of Things(IoT)systems,smart cities comprise complex networks,including sensors,actuators,appliances,and cyber *** complexity and heterogeneity of smart cities have become vulnerable to sophisticated cyber-attacks,especially privacy-related attacks such as inference and data poisoning *** Learning(FL)has been regarded as a hopeful method to enable distributed learning with privacypreserved intelligence in IoT *** though the significance of developing privacy-preserving FL has drawn as a great research interest,the current research only concentrates on FL with independent identically distributed(i.i.d)data and few studies have addressed the non-i.i.d *** is known to be vulnerable to Generative Adversarial Network(GAN)attacks,where an adversary can presume to act as a contributor participating in the training process to acquire the private data of other *** paper proposes an innovative Privacy Protection-based Federated Deep Learning(PP-FDL)framework,which accomplishes data protection against privacy-related GAN attacks,along with high classification rates from non-i.i.d ***-FDL is designed to enable fog nodes to cooperate to train the FDL model in a way that ensures contributors have no access to the data of each other,where class probabilities are protected utilizing a private identifier generated for each *** PP-FDL framework is evaluated for image classification using simple convolutional networks which are trained using MNIST and CIFAR-10 *** empirical results have revealed that PF-DFL can achieve data protection and the framework outperforms the other three state-of-the-art models with 3%–8%as accuracy improvements.
