Towards Net Zero Resilience: A Futuristic Architectural Strategy for Cyber-Attack Defence in Industrial Control Systems (ICS) and Operational technology (OT)

This paper introduces the Integrated Security Embedded Resilience Architecture (ISERA) as an advanced resilience mechanism for Industrial Control Systems (ICS) and Operational technology (OT) environments. The ISERA framework integrates security by design principles, micro-segmentation, and Island Mode Operation (IMO) to enhance cyber resilience and ensure continuous, secure operations. The methodology deploys a Forward-Thinking Architecture Strategy (FTAS) algorithm, which utilises an industrial Intrusion Detection System (IDS) implemented with Python’s Network Intrusion Detection System (NIDS) library. The FTAS algorithm successfully identified and responded to cyber-attacks, ensuring minimal system disruption. ISERA has been validated through comprehensive testing scenarios simulating Denial of Service (DoS) attacks and malware intrusions, at both the IT and OT layers where it successfully mitigates the impact of malicious activity. Results demonstrate ISERA’s efficacy in real-time threat detection, containment, and incident response, thus ensuring the integrity and reliability of critical infrastructure systems. ISERA’s decentralised approach contributes to global net zero goals by optimising resource use and minimising environmental impact. By adopting a decentralised control architecture and leveraging virtualisation, ISERA significantly enhances the cyber resilience and sustainability of critical infrastructure systems. This approach not only strengthens defences against evolving cyber threats but also optimises resource allocation, reducing the system’s carbon footprint. As a result, ISERA ensures the uninterrupted operation of essential services while contributing to broader net zero goals.

Generation Alpha, the present primary school cohort born after 2010, has significant exposure to mobile devices and gaming. Adopting a "One Size Fits All"approach in modern teaching methods may not be effective, as it overlooks individual learning preferences. Personalized learning can be facilitated by identifying a student's learning style (LS). Adaptive learning based on LS has been found to have positive effects in several studies. However, traditional learning style detection techniques such as questionnaires and self-assessments can be time-consuming and demotivating for primary school students. This study aims to propose a game-based activity framework as an alternative to the Index of Learning Style (ILS) questionnaire linked with Felder Silverman Learning Style Model for LS detection. The proposed game was evaluated with a sample of sixty students, and preliminary results indicate that the game outperforms the original ILS questionnaire in terms of student engagement and motivation to complete LS activities, achieving an overall satisfaction rate of 87.5%. The second phase of the research will focus on evaluating the accuracy of LS prediction using the designed game, which is currently ongoing. © 2024 The Author(s).

Over the past few years, blockchain technology has gained significant attention. This surge in popularity can be attributed to the emergence of cryptocurrencies and the development of smart contracts. Cryptocurrency is a digital currency that eliminates the problem of double spending. Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Stellar, Zcash, Maker, Aave, etc. become popular and are preferred for money transfers. Smart contracts are the next popular technology on the blockchain after cryptocurrency. It can be considered a piece of code that can execute automatically when the predefined conditions are fulfilled. Researchers believe that the potential of blockchain with smart contracts is only in its initial stages and that its true potential has yet to be fully discovered. Hence, an extensive bibliometric analysis is conducted to understand blockchain trends for smart contracts and to give future directions in this field. For this analysis, various steps are followed, starting with formulating the research question, defining the scope of our research, extracting and analyzing data, answering the research question, and finally, drawing a conclusion. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have garnered significant attention from the research community during the last decade, due to their diverse capabilities and potential applications. One of the most critical functions that drones must execute efficiently is navigation in real-world environments. This paper presents a decentralized approach for enabling unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to navigate safely in unknown environments and avoid obstacles. Leveraging the Optimal Reciprocal Collision Avoidance (ORCA) algorithm, implemented in the Robot Operating System (ROS), our method facilitates conflict detection and resolution in 2D environments. Through simulations using ROS, Gazebo, and Iris drones, we validate the effectiveness of our approach in scenarios with initial trajectory conflicts. Our work addresses the pressing need for UAVs to autonomously plan and execute safe flights, laying the groundwork for enhanced UAV capabilities in various real-world applications. The simulation results demonstrate the efficiency and robustness of our approach. © 2024 IEEE.

In Value-based Argumentation Frameworks (VAFs), values are ascribed to abstract arguments and ordered one to another to reflect an audience's preferences. An attack of one argument on another is successful only if the audience does not prefer the value of the attacked argument to the value of the attacking argument. Audiences can disagree about admissible arguments relative to their value preferences. Complementary to VAFs, this paper presents a novel integration of Value-Based Reasoning Frameworks (VBFs) with instantiated argumentation, specifically we focus on the structured argumentation approach of ASPIC+. Agents associate literals with social values and weight of values;together, these are used to filter the literals compatible with their values. Such a set of literals is used to construct agent-relative ASPIC+ knowledge bases, agent-relative instantiated arguments, and argumentation frameworks (AFs). Agents can attack one another's arguments. VAF and VBF present complementary perspectives on values on arguments. VBF contributes a new, formal, articulated view of agreement and disagreement amongst agents, which is grounded in their values. In addition, VBF helps us understand how different agents choose what to argue from out of a pool of common resources. © 2024 The Authors.

The current paper proposes a new approach for peripheral speech emotion analysis and gender estimation incorporating the best machine learning architectures such as CNNs and LSTMs. Its correct depiction of emotions and the variation of the gendered speech to indicate manifold signal-to-noise ratio make the approach accommodate the difficulty inherent in recognizing emotions from the recording of voices as well as predicting the gender of a speaker. It is then able to ally with preprocessing and collection of a vast range of different speech samples, feature extraction of pitch, tone and spectral data. These features serve as input to the CNNs and LSTMs: LSTMs work well at temporal regular features and the CNNs work well in feature extraction by location (spatio feature). The approach is tested on the RAVDESS and IEMOCAP datasets and establishes a near perfect match to prior approaches with reference to recognition accuracy of emotion analysis and gender prediction. Thus, applying the identified dual method approach, which could be described by such characteristics as highly accurate data pre-preprocessing, clear indication of the features of interest, a different CNN-LSTM model joint training, it offers a reasonably good platform to gain certain insights into such characteristics of the speech as our experiment demonstrates. This work offers satisfactory configurations on concerns such as human computer relation, customer relation and mental health surveillance to suggest that other applications could be achieved in future. © 2025 IEEE.
