We present the conceptual basis and the initial planning for an open source management architecture for wireless sensor networks (WSN). Although there is an abundance of open source tools serving the administrative needs of WSN deployments, there is a lack of tools or platforms for high level integrated WSN management. This is because of a variety of factors, including the lack of open source management tools, the immaturity of tools that offer manageability for WSNs, the limited high level management capabilities of sensor devices and architectures, and the lack of standardization. The current work is, to our knowledge, the first effort to conceptualize, formalize and design a remote, integrated management platform for the support of WSN research laboratories. The platform is based on the integration and extension of two innovative platforms: jWebDust, a WSN operation and management platform, and OpenRSM, an open source integrated remote systems and network management platform. The proposed system architecture can support several levels of integration (infrastructure management, functionality integration, firmware management), corresponding to different use-cases and application settings.

Evaluating an intelligent tutoring system for making legal arguments with hypotheticals

Argumentation is a process that occurs often in ill-defined domains and that helps deal with the illdefinedness. Typically a notion of "correctness" for an argument in an ill-defined domain is impossible to define or verify formally because the underlying concepts are open-textured and the quality of the argument may be subject to discussion or even expert disagreement. Previous research has highlighted the advantages of graphical representations for learning argumentation skills. A number of intelligent tutoring systems have been built that support students in rendering arguments graphically, as they learn argumentation skills. The relative instructional benefits of graphical argument representations have not been reliably shown, however. In this paper we present a formative evaluation of LARGO (Legal ARgument Graph Observer), a system that enables law students graphically to represent examples of legal interpretation with hypotheticals they observe while reading texts of U.S. Supreme Court oral arguments. We hypothesized that, compared to a text-based alternative, LARGO's diagramming language geared toward depicting hypothetical reasoning processes, coupled with non-directive feedback, helps students better extract the important information from argument transcripts and better learn argumentation skills. A first pilot study, conducted with volunteer first-semester law students, provided support for the hypothesis. The system especially helped lower-aptitude students learn argumentation skills, and LARGO improved the reading skills of students as they studied expert arguments. A second study with LARGO was conducted as a mandatory part of a first-semester University law course. Although there were no differences in the learning outcomes of the two conditions, the second study showed some evidence that those students who engaged more with the argument diagrams through the advice did better than the text condition. Personalized Web Search becomes nowadays a promising option in the field of Information Retrieval and search engines design by improving both output quality and user experience. In this paper, we present and evaluate the subsystem, which conducts the Advanced and Personalized search of PeRSSonal, a web-based mechanism for the retrieval, processing and presentation of articles and RSS feeds collected from major news portals of the Internet. The proposed technique uses information explicitly provided by the user in his profile as well as information that the mechanism can learn from the user's behavior during his search and browsing sessions in the system. As this behavior dynamically evolves, the same happens to the user's interests under the prism of the search engine. By adopting this user-centric approach, we manage to present the user with better-refined and more focused results, incorporating his personal preferences to the output. The algorithm operates not in a stand-alone manner but it co-operates and binds with the rest of modules of PeRSSonal in order to accomplish maximum integration with the system. Furthermore, we introduce an enhancement in the search function, based on cached results from past search sessions of each user individually.

Scan design has been the backbone of design for testability schemes in industry because it provides for controllability and observability of the internal flip flops of the circuit. However, the serial scan causes high switching activity during testing which results in high power dissipation. Another problem that may appear in scan designs is unknown values, which can invalidate the final signature captured in the response verifier. An alternate to serial scan architecture is random access scan (RAS). In RAS, flip-flops operate as addressable memory elements during test mode in a fashion similar to random access memory (RAM). This approach reduces the time needed to set and observe the states of the flip-flops while at the same time the power dissipation is reduced by as much as 99% comparatively to serial scan. In this work we propose a response compaction scheme for RAS- based architectures that results in lower hardware overhead compared to the response compaction scheme utilized in previous RAS-based schemes, while at the same time eliminates the problem of unknown values.

We consider the offline version of the impairment-aware routing and wavelength assignment (IA-RWA) problem in transparent all-optical networks as a cross layer optimization problem. In optical networks and in the absence of regenerators, optical signal quality degrades due to physical layer impairments. We initially present an algorithm for solving the RWA problem based on an LP relaxation formulation that has acceptable integrality performance. To account for signal degradation due to physical layer impairments we extend our RWA formulation and constrain the interference among lightpaths using noise variance related parameters. The objective of the resulting optimization problem is not only to serve the connection requests by minimizing the number of utilized wavelengths, but also to select lightpaths that have acceptable physical layer performance.

In this work, we propose a Web personalization methodology by detecting the user navigation's orientation. To this goal, we track user's hits and define whether a user specializes or generalizes his navigation through semantics analysis of the pages in his session window. An algorithm of capturing user session orientation based on a concept taxonomy is proposed. Finally, a method is presented which proposes useful recommendation to the user to improve his Web search. The experimental outcomes satisfied the prospective results. We believe that our technique could become a useful tool for navigation refinement. Furthermore, this work bridges search engine query refinement and browsing reformulation techniques.

This paper presents the performance evaluation of a multi-rate multicast protocol named adaptive smooth simulcast protocol (ASSP) for simulcast video transmission. ASSP implements a single rate TCP-friendly protocol as the underlying congestion control mechanism for each simulcast stream. ASSP is built on top of the RTP/RTCP protocol and exploits the RTCP sender and receiver reports for the dissemination of feedback information. The key attributes of ASSP are: a) TCP-friendly behavior, b) adaptive per-stream transmission rates, c) adaptive scalability to large sets of receivers and finally d) smooth transmission rates that are suitable for multimedia applications. We evaluate the performance of ASSP under an integrated simulation environment, which extends ns-2 and Evalvid-RA into the multicast domain with the use of RTP/RTCP protocols. Simulations conducted under this environment combine the measurements of network metrics along with objective evaluation criteria on the perceived video quality by the end user.

Many diagnosis approaches are based in the assumption of single faults. This assumption may result to erroneous diagnosis statement in case where multiple faults occurs. Thereby multiple fault diagnosis is a challenging task especially in the control of large scale complex systems that can be viewed as hybrid systems. This owed to the fact that multiple faults are hard to detect because there consequences can mask or compensate to each other. The goal is to detect multiple faults as early as possible and provide a timely warning. A key issue is to prevent local faults to be developed into system failures that may cause safety hazards, stop temporarily the production and possible detrimental environment impact. In this work we introduce the notion of multiple faults diagnosability of Hybrid Systems in the framework of Hybrid Input Output Automata (HIOA). We present a methodology for detection of multiple faults imposing the condition for a Hybrid System to be diagnosable. This approach is applicable to a wide rage of systems since Hybrid Systems involve both continuous and discrete dynamics. The proposed method is tested via a simple application to a two tank system.

Modern advanced botnets may employ a decentralized peer-to-peer overlay network to bootstrap and maintain their command and control channels, making them more resilient to traditional mitigation efforts such as server incapacitation. As an alternative strategy, the malware defense community has been trying to identify the bot-infected hosts and enumerate the IP addresses of the participating nodes so that the list can be used by system administrators to identify local infections, block spam emails sent from bots, and configure firewalls to protect local users. Enumerating the infected hosts, however, has presented challenges. One cannot identify infected hosts behind firewalls or NAT devices by employing crawlers, a commonly used enumeration technique where recursive get-peerlist lookup requests are sent newly discovered IP addresses of infected hosts. As many bot-infected machines in homes or offices are behind firewall or NAT devices, these crawler-based enumeration methods would miss a large portions of botnet infections. In this paper, we present the Passive P2P Monitor (PPM), which can enumerate the infected hosts regardless whether or not they are behind a firewall or NAT. As an empirical study, we examined the Storm botnet and enumerated its infected hosts using the PPM. We also improve our PPM design by incorporating a FireWall Checker (FWC) to identify nodes behind a firewall. Our experiment with the peer-to-peer Storm botnet shows that more than 40% of bots that contact the PPM are behind firewall or NAT devices, implying that crawler-based enumeration techniques would miss out a significant portion of the botnet population. Finally, we show that the PPM's coverage is based on a probability-based coverage model that we derived from the empirical observation of the Storm botnet. Copyright 2009 ACM.

Because of the growing complexity of networks and the difficult task of security policy enforcement, system administrators need simple and powerful security management tools. This paper presents a network security management tool that allows policy specification and administration of network security components such as firewall. The tool consists of four main modules. First module is considered the network repository of our toolkit. Through the second module the security policy is introduced and the necessary validation and verification is done by a policy engine. The third module is responsible for the translation of the high level security policy into an intermediate model level. Finally, the intermediate level is translated automatically into a vendor-specific security mechanism through the vendor specific compiler.©2009 IEEE.
